Originally posted by Dreakon Sounds like a lot of people used to like the game. I did play AoS for a short time but I didnt really notice too much change from the old one. Then again I didnt really do to much but kill stuff with my swordsman. Someone mind explaining what in the game was changed so drasticly from AoS?
AoS changed UO from being a skill based game where you can grab a gm weapon that you don't care about losing and go have some good pvp fun. Now to be competitive its totally item based. If you don't pump the hours of camping a spawn then your dead.
Is being able to jump into the game and have some fun such a bad thing they had to do away with it?
AoS mainly effected player vs. player. You won't notice it if you have your fun just wacking monsters and theres nothing wrong with that. Its just that PvP is where I found most my fun because no encounter was ever really the same.
Now with all the changes I still think UO is the best PvP game out there, even though you have to go for the items. I'm wishfull that Darkfall Online will be the next game to take over for UO.
I played UO for about three - four years and i loved it very much.. The game is ok, but you have to find the right shard for you.. coz I think it's the shard that makes UO great game.. I played on 4 shards.. each has completely different game style, world and races.. each had positives and negatives... you will have to find out which is the best for you.. If i would not get the opportunity to betatest Wow.. i think i would be still playing it .. so.. give it a try !
Please, continue discussing the game, it's fun hearing what different people think about it. To be honest, if AoS makes the game a bit more item oriented I wouldn't mind it too much. I recall playing UO around The Second Age release time. The game was fun but it was missing a lot of stuff. I mean items were scarce. There were a few kinds of weapons and armor but people generally had the same type of equipment. Platemail was the best at the time and it was hard to use since you needed like 90 strength. Those were good days but the problem I had with it was there wasn't enough variety. By adding stats to the pre-existing items it made items rarer since the stats were harder to find. It made a way to distinguish the veterans to the new players which isnt terribly important but it gives new players a little more to work for then a GM blacksmith
Speaking of blacksmith, it made more things for them to make and it made it harder to make that stuff. Good stuff is a lot harder to just buy now, which is good. It gives a reason to go out and find the stuff on your own rather then buy it from hard to find, overpriced players.
From what I have read the game still is skill based, the only major changes were additions of Necromancers and Paladins, and the game began focusing a bit more on items. Is that really that bad?
I too played Uo for years. From about 1996 till just after AOS. I've never came close to finding a game that was as fun. I had a Tower and 16 maxed out characters and played almost everyday all those years. It really was "fun"
I think what's happening with MMO's is fairly clear (too me at least). Everyone is upping the graphics engine in lieu of working on content. I think at some point graphics will approach "reality" and then companies will be forced to work on content to keep the market share. Look at Lineage2.. the graphics are great but the game play is like all the other Korean based MMO's. So you end up with a run of the mill Korean MMO with better graphics.
I played SWG from beta and was really into it hardcore. I was the first TKA Master in Beta 3..so I was really into into. I was amazed by the graphics but really hit a wall with content in retail ,as I am sure many others coming from a game like UO did.
I'm sure in 2 years once the real high end graphic games come out, companies will figure out tht they better wake up and work on content. I think that they are already seeing this from what happened from SWG. We are probably in a time frame where there is a race for companies to put out the most graphically appealing game. In the end market share will depend on content and companies will figure it out. I bet that it will be some smaller company that makes the breakthrough once a realistic graphics creation engine is out there.
Until then we can all just remeber our great times in Britannia.. Man I miss orcs raiding towns lol
I've played UO since early '98. I still have an active account but it's rare that I log onto it anymore. I as a few others found that AoS really took the game for a nose dive.
At one point reaching GM (100)in a skill ment something, now it just means that you hafta find a Powerscroll so that you can try and take your skill to 120 to be at all usefull. The game itself has become far too concentrated on item properties.
As for graphically, it is a very nice 2d game. However 3d looks like it was drawn by the bosses 4 year old daughter and her kindergarden class. Very choppy and square and awkward movements. Personally I wouldn't even call this 3d...more of a bad version of 2d.
Content is good The skill gaining system alone is the best I have ever seen.
Put UO skill system & content into E2 graphics and you'd have a game that would kick @$$!

I had an account for 6 years that I sold only recently.
I would probably play it again if there was nothing else, but there is so......
Its still got the most content of any MMO and Im sure if you went back and played it youd have fun. If the measure of a game is how many hours you spend playing it then for me UO is my favorite game by 10 times on anything else.
I will stop now before I end up firing up my wifes account for a look lol (she still plays)

I loved the Jihad/Vampire (I hope use of the word isn't a CIA flag) card game. The Malkavian prank ! Our group had fixations on wierd stuff like getting Smudge powerful or having Doll Face become a 'blood doll'. That guy that could constantly untap was amazing.
UO was the first MMORPG that I played and it is the best! Well pre-AOS in my opinion. If you are starting up the game now, then you might not really miss what all of us old-school players miss. Plus, since the flec/tram split, its been really easy for newbies to excel in the game. Since you dont really have to worry about getting pked at any moment. The game has definetly gone from skill to item based, so if your willing to sick either tons of time into the game or money then you should be ok. There are items in the game called aritifacts. These are what are responsibile for unbalancing the game. Basically they are extremely powerful weopons that give you a huge advantage when it comes to fighting. And the way the econony is, if you are rich then you have tons of them. If you are poor then you have none. The economy is sooo screwed up in my opinion that if you ever want to get anything of value then you have to spend really money to buy stuff. My advice if you want to start the game, is to try out a normal shard and get used to the game play. Get a couple chars to GM level in a few different skills, and then go to Siege! Siege is what I have gone to, to esacpe all of the BS. The shard is set up a lot different from normal shards, and can be quite difficuly for new players on it. My advice for once you go to siege, is to join the guild NEW. They can help you out for your first month on the shard.
UO used to be the best game ever. Where you could get pked at any moment, but all you really needed to fight was a GM weopon and some skill. EA destroyed the game, but the skill system is top notch. I love the 2d aspect of the game. The 3d is not really that great if your going for graphics, but some people are really into the "new games" with all the graphics and such.
If anyone knows of any game that can compete with UO, pre-pub 16. Please post it.
