Sorry, had to...
I know I may be chastised for saying this by some of the hardcore Warhammer fans out there, but I think they made a mistake going with the traditional Warhammer theme for their MMO, I think they should have definitely gone the 40k route instead... I mean, Dawn of War + Dark Crusade in an MMO, that sounds awesome IMO. Instead they went with the, at present, all-too-familiar, overdone, played out, high-fantasy theme... UGH. Why? WHY?!? I would have totally been stoked about that, but no... Not even gonna follow WAR now, so burnt out on that genre I can't even begin to describe it. I understand there's a lot of people that adore that genre, and that's great... But there's also a lot of people who want nothing to do with it anymore, if ever. And fact of the matter is, there's already dozens of MMOs out there that are the same exact genre, I just don't get it. I suppose they wanted to stay true to their name, since the original Warhammer was the high-fantasy theme... but, again, IMO... 40k totally trumps the original.
EDIT: Ok, I'm a n00b, just found out 40k MMO is coming... eventually... But still, shoulda done 40k first

When Mythic approached Games Workshop to do a WH based mmo the WH40K property was currently under license by THQ. The WH Fantasy property was the next best thing and was available. WH40K may be one of the cooler and more popular sci-fi properties out there but WH Fantasy is no slouch.
We really don't know what THQ is going to do for the WH40K mmo. I think I'm not alone when I say that many of us were hoping that Relic would be the one doing the WH40K mmo. After all Blizzard made the move from RTS and action RPG to mmo and WoW's wild success proved the naysayers terribly wrong. Based on the spectacular job Relic did with the DoW games I had every confidence they could produce a fantastic WH40K mmo. It's not all bad though, while the developer contracted to make the WH40K mmo is quite new it is also comprised of numerous veteran mmo designers and programmers. One can only hope they take a page from Mythic's playbook and place a great deal of emphasis on PvP and RvR style gameplay instead of mindless PvE, grinding and raiding.
N00bs may look at WAR and draw unfavorable comparisons to WoW but if the pvp and rvr aspect of WAR is as good as the hype and previews make it out to be I expect a flood of calloused and disillusioned players will abandon WoW for WAR (especially the pvp junkies).
THQ has recently renewed their exclusive license to publish WH40K based games for the next several years. Expect to see THQ publishing a ton of WH40K games during this period.
