Hello all. I opened this discussion to find out your opinions on two mmorpg games. Final FantasyXI, and Starwars: Galaxies. First, I'd like to start off by saying I've never played Galaxies--only FFonline. To me, FFXI is fun, but I often wondered would I have had more fun playing SWGalaxies. Galaxies game trailers look awesome!! But my allegiance to Square-enix helped me make up my mind in regards to which game I purchased first. So finally, here's my question to you..which one is better? (Would prefer answers based on both games played, for better insight..)
Sorry I can't voted on either, because I have played them both for a while and I really liked them both, but they are very different.
If you like Star Wars, roleplaying, crafting and player economy, customizability, crisp clean graphics, a more relaxed play experience (casual gamer-friendly), PvP, and sci-fi in general, I would suggest SWG. This biggest downside is that it has little content (as of now, it is adding content often)
Final Fantasy XI is more like Everquest. There is a grind, it requires a lot of time investment, but is has nice goals to set for yourself and rewards when you reach those goals. It has very nice graphics if you like anime style, a huge game world, great grouping system (which is almost necessary at higher levels), and a huge community, and smooth, bug free gameplay.
I would reccomend both of these games, in fact, I had active subscriptions to both at the same time I liked them so much.
Both of those games completly bore me 100% but I voted for FFXI becuase its overall content is better. The only thing I liked about it the most was the begging preview before you play the game.
I'd say SWG. If you get into a war between two player cities and one being rebel, other empire, it can actually be very fun to play. I'm still having fun with it.
Star Wars Galaxies all the way. Theres deffinately no competetion.
SWG: Amazing Graphics Fun Community Customization Sweet Housing Awesome Concepts Sci-Fi No Forced Level Grind Crafting is Amazing Much More Content To Be Added
FFXI: Level Grind Everyone Looks The Same Boring Very Annoying When You Die NO CONTENT!
Seriously i reccommend SWG, and they have a 14 day trial hehe
No offense folks, but don't talk about an MMORPG if you haven't played it. Please.
Pros of SWG: Very easy to pick up and play. You can do a LOT on your own (grouping with other people is totally optional). Some very inventive mechanics like the Bounty Hunter class. Jedi. Good graphics. It's Star Wars. Space expansion coming up with ships you can control (supposedly).
Cons of SWG: Too easy to play. You can essentially do everything by yourself. Not much actual content... just a lot of -area- to cover. Fun, but without much of a sense of "accomplishment". The game basically hands itself to you on a silver platter, which is okay at first but becomes boring. The method of becoming a Jedi (and what you get for doing it) currently sucks but is supposedly being fixed.
Pros of FF XI: Extremely in-depth combat system where the melee and the mages combine their abilities for greater effect. More (worthwhile) content than any other MMORPG created. An actual plot (not required to do, but it's awesome enough to do the missions for it). Rewards other than just levelling up, such as increased storage size, extra classes, the ability to ride airships or chocobo, etc. A great realm vs realm system (both PvP and non PvP). Massive amounts of content at ALL levels. A new expansion promised for fall, though it's uncertain what it'll bring. Accomplishing things actually brings a feeling of accomplishment.
Cons of FF XI: At the higher levels, some jobs become less desirable than others. I'm talking HIGHER levels here, folks... not 30+. 30 = newbie. Class balance isn't "ruined", it's just a bit off kilter and a couple jobs need to be boosted at 50+ / 60+. It can take a LONG time to get a party later on if you don't have regular group friends, particularly if you're not a Bard or a Red Mage or a Black Mage. The time investment to accomplish things in this game is MASSIVE... and I mean... makes EverQuest look like a candystore in comparison. It's not that you spend a lot of time raiding... it's just that there's SO much to do... (levelling, missions, raising your crafts, farming for money / items, questing, etc). Finally... monster graphics are over-used. They're very very very good, but all monsters of any given type at all levels look exactly the same. Low level mage-type undead look the same as very high level mage-type undead. Fortunately, there's a huge variety of monster "types".
In short, they're both fun... but SWG is like a stick of gum and FF XI is like a jawbreaker. If you're looking for a long-term MMORPG, pick FF XI... there's NO question about which has more to offer a gamer. But if you're just looking for something to pass the summer... mmmn, you might want to think about SWG instead. Unless you don't mind not getting to the "end game" in a few months.
All in all, FF XI wins as the better, more fun, more enjoyable, more rewarding game. It's sure as hell deeper... content / battle / plot / game mechanics wise. And it's player economy is a hell of a lot better.
As a final note, Farseen has clearly never played FF XI.
that not a bad post yuffie, but obviously your opinion is biased just due to your name....FFXI combat is NOT in depth....its just as shallow as every other fire and forget mmo....what kinda of content are u talking about....75% of all quests are all fedex, i dont consider content like that to be "worthwhile". The community sucks in FFXI, unfortuantely our good english players are being forced into becoming ruthless pricks, due to asian gamers unfriendly play styles. there are a bunch of other cons that u failed to mention also, 100% forced grouping unless u pick beastmaster (the class for players with no people skills), theres absolutely no break from the grind....grind xp, then grind gil, grind quests to get that spell, grind gil grind xp rinse lather repeat. My current FFXI status: account cancelled, no ability to offer feedback after cancelling

FARSEEN : This is the most biased review I ever saw. I played SWG for 8 months, and there is NO, I repeat NO content.
There is no story, all you do is craft and kill. FFXI has tons of quest, a backbone story with cool cut scenes and everything you do mean somethings.....
So, yeah, SWG has slightly better graphic, but the content, you are matching the MMORPG with the most content ever with the one with the less.....
Strange, I never had a problem with the Asian players in FFXI, or any other game I've played. Since I'm up all night, I am normally playing with the Aussies, Asians, and Euros, and I can honestly say I prefer to play with them over my delightfully illiterate fellow Americans. Not to say that I haven't had my bad experiences from the overseas people, but by and far, as long as you're polite, don't act like an egomaniacal American, they're pretty cool, and you even get to learn other languages.
Now that I'm done derailing, I'll pick FFXI, even though I didn't play the entire free month before I cancelled. I just refuse to deal with a level grind like that after three years in EQ. Other than that, it is superior in all ways to SWG. SWG's pitifully weak gameplay, spoonfed content, pvp that was clearly designed by a crack addict, and bugs gallore, just leave it dead in the water. I've stepped in deeper puddles. And just for the guy that said everyone in FFXI looked the same, have you logged into SWG anytime recently? Everyone and their mother is in Comp armor, and they look... wait for it... exactly the same. Pretty much every game is this way, in case you were wondering. All of SWG's quests were craptacular FedEx quests, though some did require you to kill something first, then deliver whatever it dropped to someone. I could go on, and on, and on, but I've washed my hands of SWG.
One last thing, the Space Expansion is going to suck. Alot. Buy a N64 for like $30, and grab a copy of Rogue Squandron, it'd be more fun.
I just went back to SWG since I left the game in disgust back in January.
Im having a much more enjoyable experience with SWG now.
I went back to FFXI after only lasting one month when I first bought...the second time around I only lasted 3 weeks.....
I would stick to SWG for now. They've made some tremendous improvements. I wrote up a critique in the SWG section if u wanted to see it....I listed all the pros and cons
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
I just left SWG about a week ago. Doing the hologrind has totally burnt me out on the game.
So I'm just tinkering with UO on a player run shard, and dinking around on the test server in Shadowbane for the moment, until I get a new game to beta test. Between the new Warhammer RTS, KotOR 2, and Vampire: Bloodlines coming out in the next 6 months, I might just find a 12 step program and give up on MMOs all together.
Speaking of Warhammer, why, oh why, has no one come out with a 40k game, with a setup along the lines of Guild Wars, featuring all the army types. Even a WH Fantasy would be pretty cool, I could swarm everyone with my skaven army of Doom! Hopefully, they will have a good multiplayer setup for Dawn of War, as well as a decent way to add user created maps, armies, etc.
Can someone who has played both give some indication of how FFXI rates in terms of update publishes compared to SWG?
In SWG, every 6 weeks sees a major publish that reworks a game system in response to feedback from the community, or something similar. In the time between, a new dungeon is added, and often a minor profession revamp or something. Does FFXI offer this and if not, is it because it isn't supported as well or simply because it doesn't need it?

There are content updates for FFXI, but not on a regular schedule to my knowledge. The game was out for quite a while in Japan before it was released stateside, so they got most of the bugs dealt with before we got it.
I also read something about a new expansion coming out for it some time in the near future, so I imagine that will require some bug fixes.
community sucks in FFXI, unfortuantely our good english players are being forced into becoming ruthless pricks, due to asian gamers unfriendly play styles.
Ok... read the TOS of mmorpg.com, please.

This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
He was referring to the remark about good english community and how the Japanese players tend to not want anything to do with the english players, which unfortunatly is true. If you find pretty much any FFXI forum with experienced players they will tell you it's very hard to find groups due to all the Japanese players that refuse to even group with "immature" english players.
I was attempting to say that he was overreacting a bit, as the asian players can seem pretty unfriendly as a NA player unfamiliar with their culture, and playstyle. And in some cases, once they find out you're American, they will go out of their way to ruin your day. This was rather prevelant in Lineage 1, I understand.
There was a Korean guild on our server in EQ back in the RoK days. They managed to piss off pretty much everyone on the server with their ninja looting, KSing, overrunning camps, etc. And while they spoke perfectly good english when they were trying to buy/sell something in E Commons, if you confronted them on their behaviour when they would KS you or whatever, suddenly they couldn't speak english. Finally after a month or two of this, they got blackballed by literally everyone, and disbanded. A majority of the people from the guild reformed as a new guild, and while they weren't as bad as their previous incarnation, they still carried the bad rep from before, and eventually folded, and either went to a different server, or left the game entirely.
I've never really had a problem with the Japanese players, All the run ins I've had with Asians have been either with Chinese(a few), or Koreans(the majority). Most of this is due to the very different playstyle that the Koreans have compared to the playstyle of most Americans.
Yes, but you GENERALIZE when you say that the set of ALL asian players... (which I will not repost) has some property (P).
All members of the Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc. belong to this set. To say that a specific race (asian in your case) has a property is discrimination by definition: That means that all ASIAN players have unfriendly playing styles, which is obviously not true, since some of my best friends were asian (Chinese and in some case Indian), ,which is a contradiction to your hypothesis.
For the simple reason that people of the same race are not uniform, we do not impose such restrictions:
If we were to assume that all Negroes are barbaric ,because a subtle majority of them were involved in rape crimes etc., then why do we aid them?
Because there still are many of them that desire both education and cultural amelioration.
I had to endure racism myself, since I was a caucasian that had a group of chinese friends that ceased to be my friends after discrimination (in fact they were threatened with suspension after I went to the univeristy).
In Japan there are television shows that depict caucasians as depraved and immoral, but there are still quite a few Japanese families that embrace them into their family.
Generally, people like to make racist remarks, but few of them really mean them.
I suggest you really study the consequences of your hypothesis if all Non-asians were to support it.

Not sure who you're replying to at this point, but I think you're reaching a bit calling him a racist without all the facts that led to him making that statement. Otherwise, you're just making assumptions, and that's not very PC.
