As we all know, a MMORPG is a work in progress. A completed MMORPG is for the most part an oxy-moron. You know, like military intelligence, jumbo shrimp and tax return. Take that V game for instance it had a less than spectacular release.(This is not a slam Vanguard post, using it purely as an example.) Loads of potential there, I must admit, but the key word is potential. In a year or two it could very well be a fantastic game....I say a year or two because it lacks the good foundation that enables developers to focus on content and fine tuning. Let me say that again for those that missed it. "It lacks the good foundation that enables developers to focus on content and fine tuning." LOTRO has an absolutely fantastic foundation for the devs to work with. One of the best as of late, IMO.
I see alot of posts like "I wanna swim underwater." or "The UI sucks!" or "The animations leave alot to be desired." Do you think that this game is going to get worse as time goes on? (I'm biting my lip as I type that due to the fact that I'm a SWG Vet.) I don't think so, I think LOTRO will be getting better and better as time goes on. Player housing, expanded world, more quests, more monsters, more....more....more.
I can't kill people. Yes, the apparent lack of traditional PVP is a deterent to alot of folks. Myself, carrying around the big MMORPG carebear sign, likes this. Turbine can pretty much throw away the nerf bat....it's quite simply not an issue. Instead of focussing on balancing classes, yep you guessed it....they can focus on more....more....more.....
Anywho....this is my pat turbine on the back post. They have released a great game that is going to get nothing but better as time goes on....IMO.
Cheers, I'm off to play LOTRO......

    I have to agree.

Also, the "potential" card just doesn't work. All mmos have potential whether they are polished or not. The polished ones will relise potential long before the unpolished for obvious reasons.

I am looking forward to seeing how this game progresses.

Well, I bet 250$ that the game will be getting better, and I am usually not the gambling sort.

It has a solid foundation to build on most definitely.  More MMOs need to launch with such solid performance. And while many other games are patching bug fixes, or charging extra for content, LOTRO will be sailing along giving us content for our subs.

Like the OP said, LoTRO has a great foundation to build on. Right now they have a good solid game that is a lot of fun. It can only get better as they add more land mass and more features.  I was wishy washy on the lifetime sub but when they announced the free content coming in June that pushed me over the fence. So I bit the big one and did the 200 lifetime sub, I figure with the free and paid expansions it will be good for three to five years of solid gaming fun.

    I miss DAoC

I certainly hope they make it more challenging.  Sadly, this was the reason why I only got to beta and did not buy it. It was just too easy to me.  When they up the stakes a little, I think it'll be a worthwhile game

One thing I noticed when I played the beta.  The game really involved your character.  The escape sequence and the followon attack to the town really reminded me of FFXI.  You, as your character, was involved directly.  You were not viewing things from the sidelines persay but more as a cog in a great machine.  This type of involvement helped make my final decision today and I ordered my copy of the game.   If the developers remember this kind of involvement and personal touches, then this game will do quite well.

Hmmmm........not sure what you are getting at here.  The game seems very similar to every other good MMORPG I've played.  If I want easy I do the quests colored in green and blue or get into a group (This grouping thing seems to make the game very easy at the moment.)  If I am up for more of a challenge, which is more often than not, I pursue the yellow and orange colored quests.  I don't feel limited in my ability to obtain higher level quests either, I have a couple that are 8-10 levels higher than my character (They are color coded with purple.)

I wouldn't call the crafting end of things difficult by any means, however.  Depending on which profession you choose, it would closer resembel a grind.  Recently tried out Historian for the scholar skills, Damn.....that one is going to take a while to level up in.  But, the buffs you can create look to be pretty awsome.

What I'm getting at is the game seems to be as difficult as you want it to be.  Perhaps something that I'm unaware of as I didn't partake in the closed beta and my highest level character is only 17.  Regardless, TY for your input and hope to see you playing at some point in time down the road.

At times I find this forum ironic.

People saying LOTR has lots of potiential, yet when this was said about Vanguard, it was heavily critised.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

I couldn't agree with you more.  I find the game has that immersive quality that I so desire in a game.  Funny though it took a while before I reached that point.  I played pre-order beta and was more amazed at the graphics than anything else.  The more I played the more into it I became, Probably my second or third character up to lvl 10 before I realised that this was the game for me.

Above, in yellow......I almost feel as if they don't have a choice but to focus on this involvment and personal touches.  They don't have anything else to do. I supose they could start cranking out junk but as I initially stated,  Turbine has seemed to figure out what it's all about....IMO at least.

Im quite tired of people saying this game is un-original, It might have features that other games have but its how the game utilizes them and puts them all together that makes it unique, to me atleast. I played EQ2 for 2 years and got tired of the end game raiding ruitine. I never cared for WoW long enough to play it longer then a month, but then again I personally dont like Blizzard. This game is very well made and seems that it will only get better. My Champion is level 20 and It amazes me of all the "little" things that I can go do and learn for better skill upgrades and such.

Now, Im not saying the game is flawless. There are a few bugs (which any MMO has starting out) which should be fixed but they are minor enough to be overlooked in comparison to other game launches. Time will tell all about how well Turbine keeps the work up on the game. This game in my eyes has potential to be one of the best MMO's out, and to me it already is.

As far as the PvP goes, Im a HUGE fan of it and the lack of it does not really bother me when I see the unique style of Monster Play. Im lookin forward to gearing up my toon to take down other players who are playing as monsters. And I myself even will mess around with my Orc.

The game is too new for people to flame it or praise it as much as they have. Time will tell, but in my observation the intial launch of the game is a great success and Turbine has done good so far, lets just see if they keep up the good work and help make this game succeed the others.

I'm having a blast. It's the best launch since DAOC, in my opinion. Even though I started late, I'm close to 14 and it's exciting to see everyone out there getting guilded and doing fellowships. I think I did Avert a War with a small fellowship and it was great. Lasted about 10 minutes then did some quests. Just a great game all around.

Lol..........np.  I'm glad you didn't mis-interpet anything.  Initially I was a little concerned about this, thought it over, and gave you the benefit of the doubt.  It's good to see that my faith in you has paid off once again.  I'm about to rename this post  "Good Job URMAKER, keep it up...."  That might be a little much, what do you think?

After a week of playing, this is how I see it also.  There is nothing in the game mechanics, camera control, login, lag, graphics, sound, etc. that is frustrating or annoying.  All the windows, LFG, info screens, character, bags, etc. are nice and complete.  The UI can be completely customized but so far I'm happy with it without changing or moving anything.  The AH, bank, trainers, vendors, crafting, etc. seem to be just fine.  Of course they can be improved, but they work great.

The point is, instead of the programmers spending their time fixing crap that should already be in the game, they can instead work on improving gameplay and content/quests.

WoW is currently shooting itself in the foot as more and more people got frustrated with the game due to the constant nerfs that the developers are doing in order to balance PvP. Unfortunately, the ultimate truth is that there will NEVER be a balanced form of PvP which has distinctively unique classes. People are creatures and they will always find new ways to exploit skills and abilities given to them by the game developers that the game developers never intended, hence the constant nerfs. I believe the WoW developers has fallen into an endless trap of eternally trying to balance and rebalance PvP which is an impossible task in itself.

I am glad LOTRO is disallowing PvP instead allowing only monster play in a small place called Ettinmoor.

I have to say, I complete agree with this statement.  Mythic has been hard at work over 5 years over at Mythic....go ask the players there if they think PVP "balance" has been achieved.

So LotRO's taken an easy out....should be interesting to see how it develops in the coming months.

If people really wanted true parity, they'd demand MMORPG's which provided all players the exact same set of skills to use in combat..or at least provide a standard list to chose from, and let the players have access to the skills they really wanted...

Oh, so I guess what I'm really saying is we need a skill based game to have a real chance at achieving Pvp parity.... (between players, and not necessarily between character skill sets)

I swore I would never be a fanboy again after SWG but damned if Turbine is not turning me into one. I love this game, been playing since last October in beta. Bioshock is releasing in a week or so and I am wondering whether I can tear myself away from LoTRO long to enough to bother purchasing it.

    I miss DAoC

I also agree.   I have my gripes with the game, but unlike many people here I feel that Turbine is doing the license perfect justice.  I also think that the content in the upcoming expansions will force the developers to improve on their cited foundations, and will require more creativity.  Do you think for instance, this is the final result we'll see with mounts, when they finally expand the world to Rohan?
