I have played WoW since its release, taking month long breaks once in a while. It seems that this time I just cannot get back into it - in the absence of a good guild the game is almost pointless. As a big pvper, I also find the WoW arena/battleground system outdated and quite boring. I am currently looking for a new game; as much as I am excited about the upcoming releases of AoC and WAR, I would like to find something enjoyable to play in the next 6 months. I will probably give a shot at PotBS. But regarding what's on the market what now, what would you guys recommend? Is LotRO worth it? It does look good but I'm not sure I want to grind my way back to high lvl again in a WoW-like game...The opinion are very mixed, so I am wondering if it is worth a try...

LotRO is very WoW like, with some EQ2 thrown in for good measure.
For you, I would recommend EVE.
It sounds like you are ready to move up to the next level of PvP and MMORPG play.
Nothing else coming for at least a year, so might as well give it a go.
It sounds like you dont really want a game that is very level based? The last part of your post sounds that way..I was going to recommend you try a trial of EQII but you may not like it based on that.
Have you looked into Guild Wars? Its night and day with the WoW playstyle..some love it..others hate it. Its free to play as well.
It wouldnt hurt to try the EQII trial, whats the harm, but it is very level based and you may get the feeling you are just questing for the sake of leveling. GW shouldnt give that feeling whatsoever....besides it only has 20 levels.
I have tried Guild Wars (the very first one), but did not quite get hooked to it - although in all honesty at that time I was in France with a bad internet connection and a ton of work to do. As for EQ II, I really enjoyed the EQ 1 which I played for far too long though lol...the only issue for me is that there seems not to be a lot of pvp in it... I guess an idea would be to try the next Guild Wars that is going to come out.
I am actually retired from : EQ 1, SWG, WoW and Guild Wars (the original one).
It's not so much that I have a problem with leveling, it's more that I do not feel like lvling a new toon again in WoW =p And I'm bored out of my mind on my 70 hunter.
May I suggest EQ 2 as an intelligent choice. It has just a long a history as WoW and is really quite a beautiful game once you have become used to it. NO, not a big pvp game, but there are servers with pvp. I suppose if all you want in the gaming experience is bang bang shoot'em up, rock'em sock'em...then Lineage 2 would be more your cup of tea. But be prepared to put in at least a year and a half, 7 days a week, and 5 to 10 hours a day into this game to gain pvping levels. L 2 is the best overall pvp experience in the business presently, but takes a long, long time to level up to a safe pvping level.
Good luck on your search for gaming nirvana....

no do NOT get LoTRO, no pvp, no raids, 1 faction, until they put more into it its a pve game. The worst thing about WoW is that battlegrounds get so ridiculously unbalanced that its just not fun. When the games are good then you get a satisfying pvp experience, I have not been able to find this in any other game. Most other ones will have you leveling as others said for a year before you even touch decent pvp this includes EVE, Lineage 2, EQ 2 (kinda).... guild wars is the closest thing I found but even that I didn't really enjoy either. I'm waiting for age of conan and hopefully that has some decent world pvp in it.
I will recommend you to wait for PotBS it seems this game will be your answer for now..i wish open beta come soon!
I would also like to suggest Eve Online, I have been playing for awhile and I enjoy it immensely. There are several things to do solo and groupwise. PvP is on a totally different level in Eve. Let me tell you there in nothing like seeing a Doomsday device coming from a ship that is literally 20x bigger than you for the first time. Also you can buy stock in player owned companies and get monthly dividends if they do well ( although there is a risk of the corp not doing well or it being a scam altogether albeit the scams are rare ) And another great thing is that you can set a skill to train and not have to sit there and skill grind. Im almost done with a 28 day skill timer and Im excited to get to the next one. ALso it is very easy to walk away from and not get itchy as in WoW, because you have to get home in 30 minutes because you have to get to BWL for yet another chance at a Chromatically Tempered Sword.
Anyways, thats just my 2 cents, good luck with your choice!
