Formations in DF combat!

daarcodaarco Member UncommonPosts: 4,276

We have collision detection and friendly fire. So one way is to use the old famous formations to prevent to much of it.

I have done military service, and that was many months to learn squads to move in formations. So the thing im wondering about is.

How many are prepared to train for hours for this? Or will all just use the "free war  tactics" as in almost all current MMO.

Either way we do, it will matter alot

Any ideas?

You're probably only going to see formation tactics in very small groups, or large guild warfare.

You gotta remember, when you're in the wild and an enemy comes upon you, most people's first reaction in an MMO is to either run or directly engage in combat.

    Yeah, i know

My main believe is that a team, squad or clan that train formation tactics,  will not run around as crazy people in a fight. You have nothing to gain from that in DF.

In all other MMO thats the sane way to fight.

So is it possibly to explain to a squad to adapt to DF combat now? Before the game is released.

For those of us who plan to use ranged combat (me) formation will decide the battle. A straight line would easily get us killed by other rangers, so im thinking a reverse arrow formation would be better, or we could  just use guerilla (sp?) warfare i.e. hit and run tactic wich would probbly be a lot easier for those who dont drill in formations. Anyway as soon as the game comes out well see wich one works better hit and run or formation arrow head.

I guess from these posts, it will be hard to get people to learn to fight in formations

    The WoW "tactics" die hard.

But, as you said...we need the game to how it will turn out.

I can't wait for this one, I sense the ability to use some real ambush tactics, I mean, it's pretty much a first person game, so people wondering near a ridge will be easy targets, especially since we'll have things like friendly fire and collision, height advantage will finally matter in an MMORPG!

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
