Is the game very instanced?

Hello, I would like to know if LOTRO is mostly instanced or if its mostly in open spaces.

I didnt like the D & D full instanced system, same like COV.

Im sure it will have some instances, but I would like to know if its ocasional or mostly.

Thanks

Many of the epic storyline quests are instanced, and most of them require a fellowship (i.e., a group).  They feature marquee content, characters from the LOTR storyline and so forth.  They're quite fantastically well done, in my opinion.

The remainder of the content is not instanced.

Most of it that i have seen so far is not instanced.  The big group quests such as the chapter quests you get in bree are instanced, but its not like the WOW instance dunguns (at least so far) you can run an instace in about 15-30 mins depending on your level. But they move pretty quick.

It is not like DDO or Guild Wars. The world is wide open with players running all over the place.

The LOTR EPIC story quests are instanced (in order to further the story).

    And this is the quest.

    THE quest.

Note the singular. There are other fetch/deliver/kill quests, but the main quest will be the same for the next character as well. If you're the kind of person who never do alts this will not be a problem. For me, this made the game world feel like the game world of Diablo, Titan Quest, Silverfall, or similar games.

I can handle the tutorial in City of Heroes/Villains. I cannot handle this, it is just too much.

At level 19 after doing well over 200 or more quests, maybe 10 have been instanced. The first 5 to 6 levels are in a large instanced zone after that the buildings interiors and the epic line of quests are about all that is instaCED.

Oh and for niteflys derail. In my guild a lot of us have been going back and helping guild mates do parts of The Quest. I think I have done Book 1 Chapter 10 and Chapter 11 at least 4 times now, and enjoyed them just as much in the assists as I did the initial quest. The movies at the end of the quests are just awe inspiring. So go enjoy whatever game you happen to enjoy, every shoe does not fit every foot.

Jackdog, when you say 'movies at the end of the quest' are you refering to the voiceover bit with the action seen through a ring? I didn't find them very impressive, so I have been wondering if there was something more that I have been missing?

Obviously there is a lot you are missing. here is a link to the intro movie, the end of quest movies are not as long but just as well done.

I find that about 10-20% of the game instanced and 80-90% is opened world space.

I have the intro movie already. It is weird that I am not getting the quest ones (just the Gandalf voiceover and snippets like Gandalf being rescued from Orthanc using the in-game engine). Maybe I will try a reinstall.

The rule of thumb that I noticed is that anytime when you are outside, under the sky, the space is open. Anytime you go into a cave or inside a building, you zone.

That's zoning, not instancing.  Apples and oranges.  Instances are "private".
