I have found myself getting tired of being restricted by games that have classes, such as wizard, warrior, rogue etc.Where no matter what you pick you are relegated to a specific role within the game world. I have been playing my current game for a few years and have decided it's high time for a change. Now having said that, I am not up to speed on any of the newer games out there (1 track mind and all that fun stuff) and was looking to pick the brains as it were of this community, to see what new or up and coming MMO's have skill trees vs a class structure.
Any input would be helpful.

Already out: Guildwars
Coming out: Chronicles of Spellborn, Fury
------------------------------------------------
Playing: Final Fantasy Online: ARR, Destiny
Most memorable games for me: UO, GW1, LoTRO
Some that fit the bill:
Asheron's Call- Class/Skill Hybrid
City of Heroes-Class/Skill hybrid
City of Villians- Class Skill Hybrid
D&D Online- Class/Skill Hybrid
Dark Age of Camelot- Class/Skill Hybrid
EvE Online- Pure Skill-based
Guild Wars- Class/Skill Hybrid
The Saga of Ryzom- Pure Skill-based
Shadowbane- Class/Skill Hybrid
Ultima Online- Pure Skill-based
That's just going down the list on the left. I do know that Runescape is a skill-based game also, but it is free to play and of lower quality than most MMORPGs.
MMORPG's w/ Max level characters: DAoC, SWG, & WoW
Currently Playing: WAR
Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.

Now THIS was a very unique concept. Instead of the typical "fantasy" filled with Orcs and Elves and Tolkein's Nordic influenced whatnot, this game was based around Germanic Europe...with Alchemy and Religion being the primary focus. Instead of everything being "made-up", this world used the actual names of cities and rivers, merchant companies like the Hanseatic League.
There was no such sillyness called "leveling". The more you did a certain action, the chance you would improve your skill in doing that action went up...and there was quite a few skills.
I know this won't help you in your search...your question just took me back to 1992 and a company called Microprose and their RPG...
Darklands
What I didn't like about the system, was that like most MMORPGs, eventually you've still got a long way to go in levels, but your abilities aren't anything new anymore, just the same old thing you had last level, but +1.

it's got a modifiable skill system at that too, where you add umm.. "subskills" i think the game calls them stanzas, to a skill to adjust the timing, damage, drain, whatever. PLUS this game has a great community and an amazing AI.
a few things about it tho..
there's nobody there to hold your hand. no one at ALL, it's an "open ended sandbox world"
find a guild so there's people to trek and whatnot with, otherwise the game's a wasteland
don't expect to find a quest to kill 15 rats to get some free pie
*edit* i don't consider CoX to be skill based, that's why i didn't even suggest it, but if it seems like something you'd like.. it's got my thumbs up

My two favourite games, EVE and Ultima Online.
I would recommend EVE.
Skill based is the way to go.
yeah id totally agree with this, it is a very well made skill system
Playing: EVE
and you better care
Yeah, Darkfall will be so good we dont even have to speak about it. And the skill system is without xp and without grind.
The only way i think a level system could work, is when you gain skill points for every level. There shouldent be any classes, only skills to raise.
The Mount&Blade style. No MMO but a good system
