well playing for 2 days hardly justifies how good the game  gets u should have given it a little more time i know that it should grab you from the start but in all honesty the movie did not do that for me and once the action really started i just could not get enough just like the game

A week into my 30-day free trial and I've come to some conclusions:

    -  It feels clunky.  Skipping and stuttering around (Yes, I have great hardware and an excellent connection)

    -  It doesn't look like a next gen MMO.

    -  The interface is nice

    -  Monster play is cool, however, I wish they had just gone the extra mile and made the evil side fully playable.

    -  Very small learning curve, easy to get into the game and just play.

    -  The updating system works well.

Unfortunately, the first two points kind of ruin it for me.  Still waiting for a good next gen, hobbit forming, MMO.

    :(

What looks like a next gen MMO then? LOTRO is really good looking.

I agree, I logged into Guild Wars just to keep my password in check, and I must say ,LotRO is miles and miles ahead of GW  as well as Lineage 2. The texture definition is beyond anything I've seen and it hurts my eyes to even look at anything without that high resolution textures.

Think Lord of the Rings Online is the best looking mmorpg I've played.

Keep in mind LotRO was never labeled by the developers as next gen

My roommate and I have been comparing LOTRO to Shadowbane.  Its graphical style carries a lot of the same qualities, just a little more robust in detail.   To answer your question:  I'll know it when I see it.  Right now I'm just seeing more of the same.  I would hold up screenshots from up and coming MMO's, but that isn't fair at all.  Maybe next gen is a myth?  But I still expect better than what already exists.

    -  It doesn't look like a next gen MMO.  Turbine never said it was going to be next generation.  They took the best of what's currently available and made an interesting, playable, fun game.  Next Generation to me means that it won't run unless you have the latest hardware. lol

I'm not trying to be sarcastic here but what does Next Gen really mean?

    Does it mean better graphics?

    Better monster AI?

    Story telling?

The ability to truly alter the world you are in?

    A ground breaking UI?

Does Next Gen mean breaking the mold on all these things, some of these things, one of these things?

What does it truly mean?  I understand the label of Next Gen in the console wars but what about the MMO world?

If you do come to a conclusion on what Next Gen means what are basing your information off of?

    Your own personal opinion?

    The dictionary?

    Game developers?

Internet blogs and other people's opinions?

The word Generation stands for the act of creating something, either alive or inanimate.

Usualy the word is used when you create something based on something else, human reproduction, or the term 2.0.

In this case we are talking about MMO's.

Simply put Turbine created a game based on previous MMO's else, with improvemnts and emphasis on story, instancing, and grinding achievements-aka their trait system.  IMO this embodies the term next generation, Turbine created a next generation game not just for Tolkien fans but for those people who like an emphasis on story, crafting, and exploration rather than loot and PvP.

For those people who like fast bloody action and really cool PvP AoC will be your next generation game because that developer is improving what has come before them.

Before posting this I took a quick glance at Turbine's LoTRO launches press release.  The words "Next Generation" never appear.  I don't think they marketed it as a next generation game because no one really knows what it means.

IMO it is just a sales pitch to make people go OOOOO and AHHHHH!

I should know I'm in marketing.

I like the character models in EQ2 better, even the mobs don't look that great in Lord of the rings.  But LOTRO has an Awesome landscape detail.  i have a 8800gts and LOTRO is fully maxed out, and the landscape, and especially the distant landscape feels like your in a real world.   Well done.

    Peace

I agree about the char models in comparison to EQ2, I do like them better. However, the terrain is stunning and the game is a lot more fun. Not sure what they can so with the char models at this point.

I agree stuff is easy to learn but be careful mate there before all the WoW players complain about the so called similarities. As progression occurs in this game the skill system, deeds etc. will allow more inventive builds

We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.

I love this guy, i have been trying to say this, their really is no such thing as a next generation MMO, graphicwise yes game style no, sure AoC, huxley and the likes can be called Next gen MMO's but they arent all they are are FPS-MMOs, or very close, which is nothing new its just the combining of the two. now if some one goes out their and creates a MMO that copies off of no other MMO in the play style, not graphics races or PVP, but in the actuely way you play the game, say with like no grinding or no XP, or something of the like, (not saying i like that idea) then yes its a next generation MMO, but i doubt a game like that will ever come out, poeple seem afraid to go out of the norm. :(
  • Not really that addictive. After 2-3 hours I find myself going back to play EQ2 or CIV4 for a while.

And I agree with othes here that the EQ2 character models look a lot better.

  • TyveilTyveil Member Posts: 201
Yup I agree with the OP, highly addictive MMO.  Where most MMO's have been designed for the young teen audience, LOTRO has been designed for the more mature audience.  Rich, deep lore, lot's of RP elements (the music system is fantastic), well written quests, much more.  Finally I've found an MMO to call home.. welcome to Middle Earth!
  • SamuraiswordSamuraisword Member Posts: 2,111
I disagree. I find LOTRO to be an easy dummied down game for the masses. It offers nothing new, lacks any challenges wether adventuring, crafting, tasking aka what they offer as questing, It didn't even hold my interest during beta.

I think it was jeremy from purepwnage who put it best when he said: lawllll lllawllll lawlll

World of Warcraft is a proof that MMORPG quality should affect schedule/budget and not the other way around.

Muhahaha , Since I was going with the hobbit forming joke I am happy to see posts agreeing and disagreeing on playablility of LOTRO.

Its a fine game ,faithful  in many aspects to the franchise and easy to start for those who are looking for a more realistic change from WoW without going to SOE's EQ2  or Vanguard  in the Fantasy genre of MMO's.
