New to eve. Want some advice

TroadaTroada Member Posts: 76

Hey I'm pretty new to eve, still on the trial infact, but it looks like I will be purchasing a subscription after my trial runs out. Anyway, I'm having some problems deciding on what race and weapon field I want to be using (gunnery, missiles etc)

Anyway. What I intend on doing in Eve is doing missions untill i gain some combat experience and general knowledge of the game, oh and ofc some isk /skills. After that I will want to PvP, either with some friends or join a Corp. But I'm having problems deciding what to go as.

I know every race can use all the weapons and ships, but I want to create a character that will already have the basic skills of what Im going to progress in.

I've heard Missiles are kinda crappy in PvP, Gunnery is apparently quite good, but as far as I've seen it looks really really dull, with no animations in comparsion to some of the stuff I seen in vids.

I guess what I'm asking is to play a race/weapon type that is effective in PvP AND looks pretty cool, visually.

Oh and I dont like drones!

Well missles look pretty especially the torpedo effects and they are caldari's primary weapon and Minmatars secondary. That said they don't scale in the size fo the conflict as your targets tend to be dead by the time your missles get there.. Lasers I would say look the next best and are Amarrs weapons, Whether or not they are good in PVP is another option I won't get into as it is a bit of a heated subject. Third is Hybrids for me, they are okay in PvP and are the realm of Gallente primary and Caldari Secondary. last is projectiles they look like the weakest graphically, but they are pretty damn good in PvP.

Overall its pretty much personnal taste in appearance and in the long term you can end up using every  weapon anyway and most of the ships. by the way f you like drones go gallentee they really specialize in them with 3 T1 and 2 T2 Ships being primary Drone carriers: the Vexor, myrmidon, Dominix, Ishkur, and Ishtar.

Well considering the crap graphical affects for the guns ill let you know that alter this year we are getting a MAJOUR graphics update which includes wepon animation.

My advice is to use gunships as the practice and training in missions will help you prepare for the PvP in future.

its a really hard question cuz eve is VERY big and make a char that suits YOU 100% is not really a thing anyone could help you with. we all try to make our chars just the way we want it personally. even the óld players are still working on exactly this. only thing you says that i can use to help you is that you want to go to war.. witch meens you need alot of preception and willpower ( as i wrote before i NEVER recommend that you have to low in ANY of the attributes). even tho you heard that caldrai sucks in pvp i thing caldari is a good place to start. i wish my first char was caldari. and if your used to wow pvp you will have alot to learn about eve pvp cuz this is hard combared to wow nomatter what you choose. i think you should focus on learning eve proply instead of consider your race. just pick the one you think is the coolest. and then start training for what ever you find cool and got ISK for ;)

Yep fully agree with the above poster!  Eve is basically a world simulation, a giant sandbox where you can do whatever you want its hard to tell you what to do.

I started off knowing absolutely nothing with a char, tried it out then after 14 days of experimenting with different skills, ships career paths I knew more or less what I wanted.

I would recomend you do the same, dont be afraid to ask for help or advice (never ask for isk we hate beggers),  90% of the Eve community are  very helpfull. Also read the Eve-online forums they have lots of usefull info for new players and last but not least DO THE TUTORIAL ITS VERY IMPORTANT!

Wish you the best of luck in eve

select the proper skill/attributes when creating your char ofc

hehe if you dont have gunnery you aint going to get any good fights ;)             Missiles crap ?? Dont listen to fairy tales   EvE is full of those lol

You'll soon love drones, at least the ones that fight with you anyway.

    My advice...

I started out caldari, much like you I wanted to be able to run missions while I gain ISK/skills and then eventually  move out and do PVP.  If you start out caldari as a military branch you will start off with some very nice skills.  I recommend to any new player that they start either Caldari or Gallente as those are the easiest of the 4 races to do PVE with.  Gallente are drone specialists.  As you said you don't like drones so I'd recommend going Caldari.

Train missile skills but only enough to 'get by' with until you have enough isk and feel ready for 0.0.  It really doesn't take THAT much but you should be able to fly at least a Battlecruiser before you start thinking about 0.0 because you'll need one to take on the bigger rats out there, and preferably a battleship.

Caldari are especially easy to train up because shield tanking is a bit easier to do than armor tanking, especially early on, and missile skills do not require nearly the investment that gunnery skills do to do reasonable damage.    Once you get to a comfort level it's time to decide where you really want to go .  You can, of course, continue training missile skills and there are some excellent ships for those who love using them.  Or you can branch into gunnery and start training that and switch to gunnery based ships once you are ready.   The nice thing is you can be training your gunnery while using your missiles :)  So you don't really lose anything by doing it that way.

I learned missile skills up till I had just under 1.5 million skill in them.  The ability to use any of the various missile types with good competency and all of the missile support skills at 4 or 5.  I am not specialized but I am competant with any T1 missile launcher.  Then I started training gunnery s kills, first training the gunnery support skills to 4 then training the gunnery skills themselves.  I decided I liked Minmatar ships so I chose to train up Projectiles.  If I'd decided to fly gallente I would have trained up Hybrids (which is actually a nice complement to caldari since they use hybrid turrets as well).  If I'd decided to fly Amarr I'd have chosen lasers.

All the guns have various pros and cons.  Amarr have a huge pro in that as long as you're not using T2 crystals for the lasers you pretty much never need to buy ammo beyond the first set of crystals of each type for each class of laser :)  Saves a LOT on ISK and means you can operate indefinitely away from stations since you never need to go get ammo.  On the other hand amarr suffer from Capacitor issues as the lasers chew through a lot of energy very quickly.    Minmatar's big advantage is their guns use no capacitor so you don't need to worry as much about someone hitting you with energy vampires.  Gallente's big advantage is that Hybrids do, arguably, the most damage and generally have the best ranges.  However they do chew up your capacitor.  Gallente also get huge drone bays and, trust me, that helps enormously and increases their damage output as well.   And of course Caldari can use missiles, which like projectiles use  no capacitor and can be targetted to specific damage types(minmatar turrets can to) or hybrids, which we already covered under gallente.

In general Minmatar ships are very fast and can usually be fitted with either a shield or armor tank.

Gallente ships are generally a bit slower than minmatar but faster than caldari or Amarr.  They usually use armor tanks.

Amarr ships are generally slightly slower than Gallente/Minmatar but faster than Caldari.  they are almost always armor tanked.

Caldari ships are the slowest, generally.  They are almost ALL shield tankers.  This makes them easier to tank but harder to fly in PvP since fitting some essentials for PVP (web/scram) means you lose slots for your tank.  Armor tankers don't have this concern as they mount their 'tank' in their low slots.

So choose what fits you best.   Caldari and Gallente are, hands down, the best PVE classes.  Gallente is also a very good PVP class.  Caldari is a great PVP class also but they only really come into their own in gangs.  For solo PVP caldari pilots have very few true options.

web/scram: if you don't go alone to PvP, let someone else carry them. It would depend on who of the team is the electronics specialist.

    Yes.

Caldari ships are good for Fleet ops or gang ops.  Not for solo PVP.  for Solo PVP fly another race (though Caldari do have one or 2 good ships for it, most suck at solo PVP).

Pilot/Skills/Equipment/Ship. Probably I'm defending Caldari ships so much, because I haven't drove any other into battle. I've been successful with several of those ship which people usually mark as PvE ships. And I have surprised a few opponents along the way.

Never underestimate your opponent regardless of what ship he/she is driving.
