Im playing and enjoying Vanguard. However, my advice would be to go with LoTRO for now. Come back and try Vanguard in 6 months

Vanguard has amazing potential, but that potential has to be met by the same tards that are currently screwing it up now....not that safe of a bet. I was apart of both beta's and its amazing how smooth LoTRO ran. I am not a fan of the game, I think it is a big basic, but it is done very well, no bugs, nice graphics, it works (lol). I agree with the above posts play LoTRO check vanguard out in like a year when it is ready to get taken over by better games on the market ROFL.
Believe me the game sucks and its annoying because you know a great game is in there....its like seeing the 100 on a $100 bill in the pile of crap. I firmly believe that VSoH is just a waste of time, i have been wrong before....(once i think in 1987). Warhammer or darkfall or another huge name will be ready by the time this is........anyway play LoTRO and have fun until something good comes out.
Actually I applaud Brad Mcquaid for having the guts to trying new gaming concepts (like the Diplomacy) unfortunately Vanguard got too ambitious and the core game components did not get implemented well. The game was too big (17 GB for the basic client installation) and too graphically intensive that turns off a lot of people or rather people got pissed they can't properly play a game that they bought. Seriously, the concept of building a game that runs on future machines is flawed. Gamers want their gaming fix NOW and would never wait for a year or two until the next generation hardware becomes available. Brad broke the first rule of smart game design, always aim for the lowest common hardware denominator.
liddokun while i dont applaud him for the false promises he made.....all untried garbage that does nothing or is broken....i do agree with the hardware issues..my computer runs it as smooth as it is going to get and that aint great lol
Well a lot of things can happen during the course of building a complex game like an mmorpg. Concepts that looked great on paper might not actually work at all. Features that were promised might have to be cut back or pushed to a later date due to time and money constraints. When I first came upon the feature lists of Vanguard, I was thinking to myself, "Boy this sure is a very very ambitious game and if the developers were to actually pull this off it would be the king of the mmorpg hill for a long time". But in real life, not everything can work out perfectly. When I first heard Brad touting the "build games for future hardware" thing I immediately knew it was a inherently risky flawed concept. While it might be cool to run a game that can scale to future hardware, the reality is that gamers DO NOT want games that run well on future hardware. They want their games to run well on their current system at the moment of purchase. Even game design school teaches you the first rule to good game design is to design a game that fits the current lowest hardware denominator. No matter how great you game is, what good is it if nobody was able to play it ? Especially games based on the subscription business model where it relies on current income to be able to support it.
Your not going to get very many honest answers out of anybody here. I think your just going to get flames being shot out of the nether regions by a bunch of blowhards.
I've played both games and enjoyed them both very much. I've put Vanguard on hold for the moment due to being a Middle Earth fan. Will probably return in a few months to see how everything is going. Will judge for myself...wont be asking any of these people around here. They judge the game on their own prejudices. We all do. I don't think LOTRO has a free trial out but you can check Vanguard and see if they do.
Age of Conan is definitely a game to look forward to as is Tabula Rasa.....in my opinion. If you go into a game expecting it to be lame or measuring it against some past great game, you will be disappointed. You have to take it as a new, fresh cup of joe.
I had the same problem as many here do now...I got angry at anyone that said anything bad about 'my' game. I didn't like any game that competed with 'my' game. Well, when 'my' game went down the toilet I went looking for a replacement. And wasted money and time trying to find the replacement.
Just recently I learned to hang that tired old story up for good and just go and have fun. And found I really like and enjoy games alot more. Even World of Warcraft...which I did quit because I can't afford two games at once.
If you want something different from WoW, Vanguard is the way to go. I haven't played Vanguard for quite a while, because the game was extremely buggy and didn't get along with my GeForce 8800 when I started playing it, but I hear it runs a lot better now and had a lot of bugs fixed, so it might be worth checking out. Personally I didn't like the game, I found the world uninspiring and the gameplay way too time-consuming with a lot of time spent on travel and looking for a group. But if you're very hardcore and don't mind investing a lot of time in it, maybe Vanguard is for you.
I got into the final day of the european LotRO open beta and was amazed how well it ran. The game looks great, plays great, is fun and easy to get into and feels a little like WoW, so you should feel right at home. The experience is very similar to that of WoW, and the gameplay is even more linear (a bit too linear for my taste). Because there's nothing better for me out there at the moment, I decided to buy the game, and haven't regret it.
LOTRO is absolutely amazing. Vanguard was sub-par. If you choose to go with Vanguard, I would wait for about 3-6 months, until more features are fully implemented.
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
Ohh VSoH works just not well...i am not seriously trash talking just saying the honest impression that vanguard has made on me. the original question was VSoH or LoTRO....i think, right now your an idiot to go play vanguard - LoTRO isnt great but i think it is a good game in a better state than vanguard. I really think vanguard is one to watch in 6-12 months it will be looking good, but in the same breath other games will be out to knock it down by then and you can start on that one.
AoC, WAR, GnH, TCoS - i will forget all about VSoH when WAR and/or AoC come out......cant wait for those 2.
Try each for a month and see which one you like better is the best way to go. If you just try one and don't like it you'll end up trying the other anyway. If you're a big fan of LOTRO then that would be the way to go but I'm not sure what you're looking for in a game.

I'd just wait a little bit for Age of Conan, and Chronicals of Spellborn
TCoS looks like a gamble...i am willing to try it out....either great or terrible imo.....
AoC looks awesome...if it lives up to what it says it will own the PvP mmorpg market

If you have a less then 1 year old PC, i would go for VG because it runs fine on new stuff.
VG problems are simple.... they mostly surronds performance. If you nail down the performance issues, it's an amazing game.
Don't get tricked out by people. Wait for TRIALS. And on a side note, VG does work. Those saying it does not work are seriously thrash talking.
