Not really, no. The lore-master is a class who has a mixed bag of skills, but whose main distinction is its ability to CC through mez effects. It has a variety of debuffs as well, and a (relatively weak compared to what you would be familiar with in other games) animal pet. The lore-master is really a grab-bag of abilities, and the key to playing it is knowing all of your abilities and applying them in the right situation.
There really isn't anything in LOTRO like a "wizard" in terms of being a spellcaster. It just isn't a part of the game. So if you want to be a long-range damage dealer, you pick hunter, because that is the ranged nuke class. If you want to be a healer, you pick minstrel, who heals not with "spells" but by playing music like a bard. If you want to be a utility debuffer/CCer, you play a lore-master, etc. There is no "spell damage" class, there is no "spell healing" class.
There is only 6 true wizards in the entire LotR Story arch, so it is actually a really cool how Turbine weaved out the classes . I'm a hunter and love it
So then hunter is like a Legolas? Right? How stupid it is that there is no Spell Caster class. I mean its a magic world and no magic.
Eh, no, it makes perfect sense that there is no spell caster class.
LOTR is not a magic world. The only folks who have the ability to use magic are the immortal incarnated Maia, and there are only a handful of them in the world (Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron and Radaghast), and the bearers of the rings forged by Sauron. No-one else has magical abilities, and it is not a world where you are seeing wizards all the time. Gandalf is very much exceptional, and that's why players can't play a character with his kinds of abilities -- it would be absolutely lore-destroying to have 100s of Gandalfs running around the world.
And, yes the hunter plays close who what you would have seen Legolas doing.
I kind of think of my minstel as a magic dealer. I mean what kind of lute can cause damage by hitting a few chords. And then theres my shouts. My vocal chords can cause some major dps. Its either magic or that my music is so bad it kills people. you decide.
If not, why? What is the theory behind no casting class in a fantasy magical MMO?
Middle-Earth has no spellcasters other than the Istari (the wizards, of which there are four in the entire world of Middle Earth: Gandalf, Saruman, Radaghast and Sauron), and the magic enjoyed by the holders of the other rings forged by Sauron (e.g., Galadriel, who has one of the three elf rings, or the Nazgul, who have the nine human rings).
Having players running around with wizard-like abilities would be lore destroying, so it isn't in LOTRO. Middle-Earth is not a "magical world", it is a world where magic is very rare.

Just a quick response to the Minstrel's "magical music". it isn't. It doesn't do 'damage', per se. Your health bar isn't really health bar at all, it measures morale, or your willingness to continue the fight. Music can raise morale of allies and demoralize the enemy. So, it isn't magic at all
There is no death for PCs in LOTRO. You succumb to wounds and hopelessness, and retreat to fight another day. This, again, is true to the lore. There is no resurrection in Tolkien's world (well...Gandalf, but that was an exceptional situation, and one we never really have a concise description of). So the abscence of magic and use of morale to measure success or failure is perfectly in line. And a very novel and good solution, in my opinion.

Whole reason it is called morale and power, and not Health and Mana.

Gandalf is essentially the incarnation of an immortal being (Olorin is his name), and his "resurrection" is really more of a reincarnation of the immortal Olorin -- so your point is even stronger, really.

Just read the books.
I did some 30 years ago while in college.
As I recall magic is throughout the trilogy, but only referred to
There really is magic, but just not what is seen from Hollywood's perspective....
LOL, yessir..kiddo..I have read the books..as well as Carlos Casteneda...but most of you young pups wouldn't know of his writings
For those of you out there that play MMO's with druids you might take a look at his writings...
LOL.. I also read both the LOTR series and the Carlos Casteneda series. I never did meet my ally even though I tried similir methods as Don Juan employed. It was college in the early 70's. afterall .
People are over-complicating the replies. While informative for many I would assume, to answer the OP's question, Lore-masters are the class most like Gandalf in the game. (Though clearly not as powerful).
They aren't your typical Mage from other MMORPGs, but neither would Gandalf be.
Magic wasn't actually limited to the wizards in Tolkiens universe. In the Silmarillion there are several instnaces of magic use by elves. Finrod Felegund (If I remember correctly) fought a magical duel with Sauron to try to rescue Beren from the tower of Tol Sirion (I think that was the place).
There was also a reference to dwarves doing incantations and such in The Hobbit when they were trying to get the secret door open and I think also in The Lord of the Rings when they were trying to get into Moria. They weren't flinging fireballs and they weren't successfull but it was still magic.
IMO, there was magic in certain races. For instance, the elves had to be magic in nature to be immortal. However, they did not have the ability to express magic as in the movie when Arwen summoned the water horses. Arwen didn't do that in the book.
The true wizards were of the Valar, angels that kept watch over the universe. Apparently, they could be seduced as they felt all the pleasures and fears of mortal men.
There is definately magic in Middle-Earth, its just not like other fantasy worlds. Only beings from a greater place of existence could wield the magic.
Gandalf the white is a wizards. The thing is, wizards in Middle-earth are very very rare. There are only very few wizards left alive and they can be counted on one hand. Almost all of them are hermit types that shy away from the politics of the world and lives far away from civilization. Lore-Masters however are plentiful because think of lore-masters as scholars who have the ability to use "some" magic that is summoned from the land (life/nature/elemental magic) compared to wizards who uses arcane magic. So think of Lore Masters more like mystics or druids instead of the typical D&D wizard.
So then hunter is like a Legolas? Right? How stupid it is that there is no Spell Caster class. I mean its a magic world and no magic.
Not stupid at all really. Finally a game that took an intellectual property and made a game out of it being able to stick to the original lore. On top of that, they did it right. I personally can't think of any other company that has been able to accomplish this. Usually all games based off IPs are shovelware.
To catch you up, magic in general is supposed to be extremely rare in LOTR and wizards, such as Gandalf and I think 4-5 others, are demi-gods which are granted the use of specific powers. Well, that is it in a nut shell anyways. So a wizard class in LOTRO would be bogus.

Gameplay-wise, it would be Hunter (the nuker class).
