Best MMO for Exploration?

TuutobTuutob Member Posts: 607
I've seen a lot of new titles come out, and a lot of people trying to 'bring back' old MMO's lately and I really want to know which of these has the best group and exploration aspect.

I am currently playing World of Warcraft and it is all good, but there's no real motivation to explore things. I want a game where some of the content is made to make you go out of your way.

I don't care how old it is, like I have heard that Ultima has a really good exploration value, and with original EQ. Is it true? Please help!

Thanks!

Lineage 2 was pretty cool, lots of nice places to explore.  However the gameplay actually makes me cringe when I think back, absolutely horrible in every aspect except graphics.  Its like they went out of their way to make it as tedious as possible.

Take it from me, I've tried a good many MMO's. I'd say Wurm online has the best exploration. It has climbing and survival skills, which give exploration a real sense of accomplishment. Especially coupled with colonization.

Well, in Star Wars Galaxies, you get location badges for certain places you visit. For example, if you want to travel to Yavin and visit the Woomalander Temple, you'll get a badge and after you collect a lot, you get navigation badges. Also, the maps on SWG are pretty damn huge, and with I think 12 planets, 5 or 6 being very large, that gives some insentive on searching for cool things.

I have played so many games, and for exploration I have to give it to Vanguard.  The world is immense but has different geography, terrain, flora, fauna, and cultures throughout the entire vast world.

I love to explore; I need to explore in MMORPGs - luckily Vanguard allows me to do that.

Tried Ryzom, hate the grinding. I will say it has good exploration, but barely anyone is interested in grouping and, if so, the level difference is usually tremendous...

Well, since you said group *and* exploration, I don't really have an answer for you.

If you want *just* exploration, I'd say AC1.  Its basically one big contiguous landmass, and you can just point yourself in one direction and eventually find dungeons or towns or landmarks.

Honestly, the best game I've ever played exploration wise is EverQuest Online Adventures on PS2.  The world is huge and seamless, and there are so many nooks and crannies that probably have never been explored....except for curious ol me of course.  I love that aspect....to be able to pick a direction, run, and find something nobody else has even bothered to touch.  That game is almost dead though.  I too would love to find a game that captured my sense of exploration like EQOA did.
