LOTRO vs. AC2

grimbojgrimboj Member Posts: 2,102
Since LOTRO is turbines last chance at staying in profit Im getting the feeling theyve gone all out from some of the reviews - how does it compare to our old friend AC2? I remember sitting waiting for a party member playing on my bongo so its nice to see bard instruments - any other similarities? Does this game have that true 'I was at on the toilet and came up with this idea' feel?

My honest feelings?  It's what AC3 would have been with a LotRO overhaul.  Or what AC2 should have been, take your pick.

Yeah, everyone keeps comparing it to WoW, and I can see a handful of WoW influences, as well as Guild Wars and other influences, but mostly I see it as an evolution of AC2.

Agree, agree. When I play this game it feels like AC2 in a lot of ways. UI, Node harvesting, bags/inventory, character slots. Even has the same narrator that did the Vaults in AC2 that does the voice of Gandalf I believe. I think he is in DDO as well.

Wow, I might have actually liked AC II then.  I never gave it a shot (and now it's far too late of course).  Interesting...

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

AC2 had a far better implementation of combat dynamics.  I could write a novel about all the failings, shortcomings, and downright stupid design decisions of AC2, but I have always, and will always say that they had really top notch ideas for their combat skill trees and classes.  If only they hadn't screwed up so much on every other aspect of the game.

Oh, and the music system in AC2 was one of the best innovations ever introduced into an MMORPG (my apologies if it has been introduced in another game).  Turbine tried to expand on the idea in LOTRO, but ultimately I don't think it will work, since its far too complex for the average joe.  In AC2, you just chose whichever instrument you liked, hit a particular melody you enjoyed, and then hoped more players would join in with more instruments.  The way the different instruments and melodies started blending together produced some very interesting and enjoyable music.  I used to make and run 2 trial accounts on my PC and run them at super low graphic settings, just to stand around populated areas and play music, hoping that others would join in.

If some other company bought the rights to AC2, and fixed the vast amount of things wrong with it, I'd happily plop down my consumer dollars and start up a Lugian Hammer/Elementalist again =).  And the first thing I'd do would be to find an Ice Lute.

    Equal opportunity troll.

If I won the super lotto jackpot I'd jus buy AC2 and run it as a non profit organisation

This is the single biggest thing on my LotRO wish list.  Not all of us are musically inclined.  I see no reason why the AC2 music system couldn't be added to the current system.

The most important part of reading is reading between the lines.
