Trying to find a new MMO

Alright, I'm looking to try a new MMO out for a while. I'm hoping if I give some background on what I've played and my preferences, the rest of you can steer me in the right direction.

My first MMO was FFXi on the PS2. I played for 4 years, ran endgame, did Dynamis runs, camped HNMs, ran sky, etc. I finally got burnt out because of the level caps on events to gain access to every new thing that came out (or at least it felt like it was), general boredom, and the state of the economy every time gilsellers got banned. Overall, I enjoyed the game, but finally just needed something new.

At this point, I tried WoW. Within 2 months, I was level 60 on one character and had three others above 40. I ran MC, ZG, AQ, and was on the verge of running more endgame instances, but The Burning Crusade came out and they became obsolete. So I hit 70 in 2 weeks and am back to being bored again. I can't stand trying to farm to upgrade my Fireguard and Lionheart Blade, I have pretty much the best gear I can get for my warrior that my guild is able to help me obtain, and the game just feels empty.

So I tried EVE Online. The game is fun, but at present it's really boring just flying around in a little frigate popping NPC pirates while I wait 7 days for each of my skills to complete training so I can fly something bigger. Yeah, it's fun when members of my corporation are on so we can pvp and ransom people, but when they're not, there's really nothing to do.

I tried Guild Wars somewhere between FFXI and WoW, but I just can't seem to get into that game at all.

I also bought the big "Station Pass" thing for the SoE games that came with Everquest, Everquest 2, Star Wars: Galaxies, Matrix Online, and Planetside, but none of those games really did anything for me. I didn't like the graphics in EQ or EQ2, Galaxies was dull and the quests/missions in the starter areas made next to no sense at all, especially the flight ones, Matrix online was just terrible all around (the combat system was the worst though), and I couldn't even bring myself to attempt Planetside.

Which brings me to the question:

What should I try next? I've been looking at Lord of the Rings Online, Lineage II, and Vanguard in particular, but I can't seem to find any concrete info on any of them as far as what they're like and how many people actually play them. I am also looking at Warhammer online, but it's still a good way from release, and I want something to play in the meantime. Any *useful* input is appreciated and who knows, perhaps I'll even join your server and pester you for help and info once I start

In any case, thanks for reading over my post and I hope to find a new game to play soon.

Im in the exact same situation as you are. And the hard truth is....there is no good MMO out there at moment. If you have tryed as many as you have.

The only thing i can do is to wait for all new ones to be released in 07. PotBS, AoC and so on.

Yeah, overall I'm just waiting for Warhammer to come out, but I don't expect it to hit before 2008. I'm just really trying to decide between Vanguard, Lineage 2, and LoTR Online. Vanguard seems to be lacking, to say the least, from what I've read. Lineage seems like it could be good, as does LoTR Online. If anyone could give me some overall info on any of those games or any others that may be viable options, please feel free to. Thanks.

If you are a fast leveller as it seems i wouldnt bother with LOTRO as you will probably burn out on things to do pretty quick. Im a casual player and love it but the only real end game just now is the monster play  as far as im aware and not enough player characters are at max level to make that competitive right now. If your willing to take it slow along with the rest of the slow people it might be more enjoyable, the game is heavily quest based and grinding mobs isnt as viable as in other games. The content solo wise slows down at around level 35 and its mostly group quests then as the update in about a month and half will be adding a new zone and some more solo quests.

Heh your OP looks like it could of been writen by me. Im in the same boat as you, I'm currtently tinkering around in a few games after Leaving FFXI. Only thing that has came close to FFXI for me is WoW, but playing WoW Hardcore = you just get burnt out with the content.

I used to play Lineage 2 in beta, i really liked it. But after launch the game got really boring, you have to be someone who is willing to grind in the same area for days to hit up some lvls. Vanguard.. hmmm what can i say about Vanguard? I really really wanted to Love this game but i just couldnt, the theme i did indeed fall in lov with but the game is (was? I played final beta + 1st month of launch) just too buggy. I would like to go back to Vanguard in a month or so to see how its improved but by the look of it there might not be the player base to even make it worth while.

LotR: Online I only played open beta, Played it for about less then an hour because i had alot going on so i couldnt play. I cant form much of an opinion about the game, but form what little i played it seemed "Ok" for lack of a better word.

What i plan on doing is this:
Im playing WoW again, I play EU WoW and theres a huge group of players making Pre-Made guilds and rerolling on the new Servers that will open. So im going to Reroll with a pre-made guild in hope to spark alttle life into WoW for me. When WAR hits im going to lock my self on to that game and try and make it my main MMO.

    Current MMO: Nothing
    Waiting For: FireFall, GW2

OP, you have a pretty good history of games.

What are your likes / dislikes in MMO gaming? Whats your playstyle like? Are you social or not? Can't really match up a game without more info on your playstyle. If all you are doing is banging out a new MMO in a few hours, you are just wasting money. You need to know what you like and match a game to that best you can. Right now you are firing blindly at anything hoping to hit a target.

Well, "boring level grinds" aren't really that big a drawback to me. I did over 300 job levels in FFXI and all you do on there is mindlessly grind on mobs in party. So long as there's a good player base to grind levels with and a system to easily find other people to party with, I am not averse to that in the least. My problem with WoW was simply that I hit the level cap and ran out of things to do very quickly originally, and TBC didn't really up the cap enough to challenge me or keep me interested. Guild Wars was a joke so far as levelling as I hit the cap in under two weeks. EVE levelling is a challenge, but it's a very dull one due to all the levelling being done in real life time and there's really nothing fun to do in the meantime without a group of people in the game to help (ie: pvp piracy) .

Crafting is another concern of mine, being as I had more crafting levels than I did job levels in FFXI. My gripe there was that you can fail a synth over 90 levels under your skill and lose all the mats combined with the fact that I can fail a crafting attempt for another player and lose items worth millions of gil in the process. In WoW, I had my mining and smithing at 300 before I ever reached 60, then I dropped blacksmithing for enchanting, got it up to about 240, dropped that for herbalism, took that to 300, then made my alt do Enchanting up to 300 and Tailoring to 300, dropped Tailoring and took up Herbalsm to 300, then dropped Herbalism and took Tailoring to 300 again. So yeah, crafting has to be present and preferrably overly useful. I don't want something like SW:G though, where you have to either be a crafter or an adventurer, unless there's at least 2-3 character creation slots included in the fee without having to pay extra unless the fee is considerably small (ie: $1 or less) and I'm able to exchange items between my characters via mail or something along those lines.

I also am the type that truly enjoys endgame, provided it's engaging. In FF, the biggest thrill I ever got was camping Behemoth for the first time and being the one to claim him over the RMTers. Endgame in FF is excellent, albeit time consuming, aside from being forced to do ridiculous numbers of level capped quests to gain access every time S/E puts out a new expansion. If the quests weren't capped and weren't so long and obscenely difficult to find people to do, it wouldn't be so bad, but the quests in Treasures of Aht Urghan are just too much. I don't mind doing stuff like the "attuning" quests in WoW, but having to punish myself with a level cap just so the lower level people can do them is just poor planning and execution by S/E, especially given the content at the end of it all is designed for people at the 75 level cap, not at 30-60.

So overall, I want a game that balances exploration, crafting, and levelling well and has a good endgame setup. I don't mind a game that requires patience and effort, I actually would prefer one that will keep me occupied for a long time. PvP is a plus, but not totally necessary. I am the type that enjoys it, but doesn't want it to be constant. There's a place for PvP and that is battlegrounds, not where I'm questing and easy pickings for "bluewall" types who will wait til I'm nearly dead from the mobs and then frag me. If however, I have to tolerate open PvP for a good game, though, I'll do it. A strong community and social side is nice, but I don't mind soloing if I have a guild/clan/whatever to talk to while I do it and that can help me learn aspects of the game I might not be familiar with.

Hope that'll help ya suggest a game for me, and I hope to have a new one to play in a week or so. Thanks again.
