Regarding Gametap Billing

First off, this is a critical post, but not of Myst Online, and not even of Gametap's service. I was really impressed with Gametap's login client, and URU Live is definitely an interesting product. All that said, Gametap's billing does something that I've only seen in one other MMO (Matrix Online, pre-Sony) since 1998, and it's a real turn-off; while you can subscribe and resubscribe with literally two clicks of a button on their website, you have to actually make a phone call and talk to customer service before you can cancel. I'm not sure if all of them do it, but the representative I got actually tried to talk me out of unsubscribing before I ultimately managed to get a number confirming my account had been canceled. When I commented on the need to cancel via phone, the representative said it was for "security reasons." Apparently Gametap knows a secret that SOE, Blizzard, CCP, Turbine, NCSoft, and many others do not.

Again, this isn't a criticism of Cyan. They have nothing to do with billing, and they've made a quality product, even if it wasn't quite what I was looking for. This isn't a criticism of the Gametap service, as 800+ games for $9.95 per month would be a nice deal if I didn't already own every one of the games they provide that interests me. This is a criticism of Gametap's billing system, and a heads-up for people who might be put off by it. I realize that most Myst fans probably won't be deterred by this, and that's both understandable and commendable. For people who are on the fence and debating whether or not to jump over, it's worth considering, though. I probably wouldn't have bothered with it if I'd known then what I know now, and it's actually enough to keep me from going back at a later date. Since I would've appreciated a warning before signing up, I wanted to provide other potential subscribers with one.

I very much agree with you. You should be able to cancel online just as easy as signing up. I'm still a member of Gametap as I enjoy a break every now and then to play some classics.

Sirius Satellite Radio is the exact same. You can activate your account online but you cannot cancel online.

Side note to all of this as I've read on the Sirius forums is some people will have their account for a year and attempt to call and pretend to cancel their account. The service rep gives you the last minute deals so you will stay subscribed. Some were getting their monthly bill from 14 dollars to 6 dollars a month mentioning they could no longer afford the service.

I've heard this as well with Gametap and them offering 3 months free to reconsider.

I hope Myst: Uru does well with Gametap!

I'm with you on the phone cancelation thing. They seem to do that to make it more difficult to unsubscribe, maybe hoping many people will not want to go through the trouble of a phone call. I used the available online chat and talked to a CSR there, so no phone call is necessary. I told him I was not able to play as much as I would've liked and might resub at a later date. The CSR managed to talk me into keeping my sub then by giving me a free month. So for $.99 I got two months of play time. Not bad at all. I'm actually enjoying the Gametap service personally. There are around 889 games available for play through them as of this post date and time.  It is also funny to look at some of the older games and see how graphics and games have changed over the past 20 years or so. The only negative thing is that some of the regular "features", such as cheats and console commands are generally not available in most games through this system. Everything is run through the online client and is locked down pretty tight.

Its a free world and it's not something I find an issue but I am sure if you stop paying they will kill the account quick enough. :)
