SWG vets opinions on Conan?

NeloodNelood Member Posts: 11
My guild has been MMO hoping since CU and I think the Conan might have potential with actual sense of ownership with player cities, player city raids, cross faction communication, and somewhat of a social community invoked by PvP.

What does the SWG vet community think of this game?  It's been a long year...

Don't get me wrong, I love the Conan film and some of the comics, but I couldn't play an MMO about him. In order for another MMO to satisfy me it would have to have most of the things SWG has and it would have to be science fiction, not fantasy.

I am however curious to hear if any vets have played it and if they have, what they think.

I'm really looking forward to Age of Conan. At first, I also thought a MMO based on Conan would be cheesy. Nevertheless, after I saw a few demonstration videos (not the lame official video), I've really been looking forward to its release.

The following is a link to several AoC videos: http://forums.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=15749. Please get the 200+ meg ones under the --- Video GDC 2007 --- section. Those are the best! They show some high quality character creation and combat.

Conan is so much more than the Arnold movies ever could be. The movies were fun. But to read Howard's books and tales of Conan I think the sky is the limit with this MMO. Although I truely prefer the Sci-Fi genre I will give this one a try. I have been watching this one for some time. They truely have some cool idea's planned for the game, I just hope they pull them off smoothly.

"Hyboria is a harsh, brutal world, because that's more fun. Your characters bleed, they have sex drives, take drugs, get in drunken brawls, rob, poison, kill people in their sleep, get involved in gang warfare and become gang lords. It's a game for grownups." -- game director, Gaute Godager (from MMO Games Magazine)

The ability to break arms, necks and cut off other players heads does sound cool.

Also, Conan lore is low fantasy. Not what most people picture when hear the word "fantasy."

One thing that sounds cool is all magic use will corrupt your soul - use it too much and you will end up having to fight your way out of Hell!

BUT this game is nothing like SWG, especially pre-CU.

For example, you can attack player cities but since it's ALL instanced and no one will be around to see it.

It's level based, quest driven and full of zones and instances.

I heard it was also an 18+ age rating.

Is it class/level based, or is it skill based?

I can't stand the thought of yet another level based game.

  • NeloodNelood Member Posts: 11
Yeah, I've read that it's lvl based which I'm sick of as well.

Although the combat system isn't typical which somewhat gives me some hope of something fresh from the run of the mill MMO.

No target system; you swing at your target with a meter in different areas 'causing specific damage based on multiple factors.  Ranged combat has some FPS elements; mounted combat seems interesting.  Crafting promises to be involved and unique, probably not like SWG; but probably very important in defending player cities.  City siege weapons sounds neat-o.

I'll be there to try out some of the new elements as well.  Seems promising and if it follows through with what they promise it should be awesome.  Only time will tell, just have to wait til Oct 30 to find out for ourselves.  But still gonna play the next quality sci-fi MMO that comes out.  Preferably anything that's not post-apocalyptic.

    Here's the main problem:

    There is one Conan.

In game, you'll have Konan, XX-Conan-XX, Conan', Connnnnnnannnn, Cohnahn, Cohnan, Kouhnahn, Conan''', Leeeroy Conan, Conan'', 'Conan, Coman, Comnan, and everyone's favorite, Conan O'Brian.

People will want to play Conan - something that is impossible in an MMO.

The lore of Conan doesn't offer that much. So they'll either stay true to the lore, and be stuck with 5% of an MMO, or add the usual generic MMO fillers.

And you were ok with all the Luuke's, Bhoba's, Haan's, Darthsdlakhsdlk's, (insert the rest of the clones here) in SWG? It'll handle it just like any other IP.

The one sticky point for me is the combat system as i understand it. It is a hybred of the fps and mmo (sound familiar?), it will probably work alot better then the poster child of how to enrage your paying fan base.

One of the show stopping reasons why I not do not but can NOT play NGE is the combat system is not friendly for my hands, If i play that style of cambat for over 20 min i need to stop and take pain meds.

mouse targeting and clicking attacks/specials (as the prefered method) in a game will prevent me from even looking at it.

<p>I, for one am really looking forward to this game.  It is one of only two games that I am interested in that are in development, the other one being Fallen Earth.</p>
<p>I am also a big fan of the sci-fi genre, but at least AoC isnt the usual Elves and Dwarves crap that I am sick to the back teeth of.   The combat system sounds great as does the siege system.  I am a little put off by it being a class/level-based game, but I could forgive it that if the rest of the game lives up to its potential. </p>
<p>However, having said all this, I dont think that it will be anything like Pre-CU SWG.  What interests me though is the fact that at least it is something different from the EQ High Fantasy clones that dominate the MMO scene atm.</p>
<p>As I said earlier, I am also following Fallen Earth.  It is a Post-Apocalyiptic sci-fi MMO that is skill-based and also looks to have some funny and interesting features.  However, I cant see this game being released till around about Q2 2008 as they havent said anything concrete about closed beta yet.</p>
<p>At least one good thing has come out of the abomination that is Vanguard, I wont have to upgrade my machine to play either of these games as I bought and built a brand new gaming rig for Vanguard, lol.</p>
    <p> </p>

Played (Retired) - AO, SWG, MxO, WoW, RFO, SoR, CoX, EQ2, GW, L2, Vanguard, LotRO, AoC, TCoS, Aion.
    Favourite MMO - Pre-CU SWG, 3 Years, 4 Accounts, 2 Pre-CU Jedi (1 Pre-9).
Awaiting - Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Secret World, Earthrise.

i will give it a test when it comes available.I have a big blah feeling about it being another level based game(so over done) Give me 250 skill points and lots of choices with plenty of options on what i can do..But i wont knock AOC till i try it.No sense in forming an opinion on a game still in developement..Alot can and will change till it hits live..Hell it could change during live if its not successfull..

The overall idea for the game sounds great. I as well am worried about the combat system. I really dont care to work in game .....and I hate fps. Meh, hopefully I get to see firsthand ... alot more depth in this game than the curretn crap out there.

    What killed SWG?

Players wanted to be iconic and starwarsy...

Hasn't anyone learned from the lesson?

i'm personaly waiting for fallen earth. crafted is better than drops. level is not as important as being able to place skill/atribute points.

NO CLASSES anyone can learn anything! 6 player factions. real-time travel.. a dev said it would take about 20 hours to walk across the map.

SOE wanted players to be iconic and starwarsy.

In my experience, folks that give themselves cutesy or iconic names are just internet comedians (lawl, Admiral Snackbar! How cute!) or kiddos. Some folks just aren't creative with names, either, and that's partially where the SWG random name generator fails. All of the names it generated were complete gibberish and therefore unappealing.

With regards to the OP and AoC, while I'm in the minority that would much prefer to play some science fiction/fantasy games, AoC will bring a lot of stuff into the MMO genre the same way Anarchy Online did. Plus, AoC is one of the rare occasions I'm hoping the 18+ tag will keep a lot of kiddos away from it. Personally, I specifically seek out guilds that have age requirement specifically 'cause I can't handle being a cyberparent. Works for me, as long as I'm killing the kiddos and not having to put up with their crap.
