Questions from a prospective player

I've been looking at Lineage as a possible new game to try. I'm honestly looking for a new main game to play after having played FFXI for 4 years, 3 of which were spent at the level cap doing endgame, and having played WoW to the level cap, both prior to and post Burning Crusade.

Predominantly, I want a game with a good crafting system, a levelling system that will weed out a lot of immature and unskilled players before they reach the cap (ie: a time investment that is not easy for those who don't have what endgame takes), an involving and challenging endgame environment, and a player base that is big enough that I won't feel like there's nobody else playing. I'd prefer a game where people will be helpful to new players as well, since I spent my first week or so of FFXI not knowing what "signet" was and not knowing that NPC vendors rip you off horribly. PvP would be nice, but not necessary, and preferrably not in the open PvP setup that some games have. I hate it when I get killed in the middle of a quest by someone who just feels like being a prick. I can tolerate the open PvP environment if I absolutely have to if the rest of the game is good, but I'm  the type that believes that PvP is best left to designated areas and times.

The graphics for the game look beautiful, I just have reservations about what I mentioned above. If anyone can give me some info on the player base and overall game mechanics and whatnot, that would be excellent. I was also wondering if there's a free downloadable trial account anywhere, as I can't seem to find one on the Lineage 2 site. If anyone can get me a link to that, I would be greatly appreciative, just as I will with any useful insight into the game.

I was toying with the idea of recommending this to you but you didn't mention PvP on your other post.

L2 is a pretty tough grind and the economy is brutal also. I generally do not encourage anyone to play it unless they are sure they can deal with the open PvP environment/grind/economy. Its not as bad as some make it out.

The key to the entire game is being social, getting into a good guild, getting involved with the politics and community. That requires a bit of a thicker skin then in most games. If you did FFXI for 3 years, you obviously are good at socializing.

Give it a try. BUT do some research FIRST.

Races and classes...each has a role

How PvP works....as you can see a few post down, there appears to be some confusion as to how PvP actually works in L2.

You can usually pick up L2 in a bargin bit now days pretty cheap if you can find it. I think fileplanet had a free trial not to long ago.

From what you wrote in your other post, I don't think games like WoW, LotR or GW are a very good match for you. One thing I can see, you don't like EZ mode play. L2 is a bit extreme though lol...........if you can survive here.....there isn't currently an MMO you can't master in about 30 minutes.

An alternitive is maybe EVE? Again thats an open PvP game....all the good ones are freedom of action based.

Yeah, as far as EVE goes, I have been playing it off and on. The PvP in it doesn't bother me much, so if the PvP in Lineage is on the same sort of level, that really won't bother me. I'm really waiting for Warhammer Online, but if I can find something to play prior that I really like, then I'm all for staying on with it. This is still pretty much the only MMO I've seen that I think would be a good match for me. Vanguard apparently came out and flopped and LoTR Online is way too simplistic from the sound of it. I'll have a look over the info you suggested and make my decision from there, I suppose. Thanks for the links and any further input from others is still appreciated.

The only thing I see on your list that may be an Issue with you and L2 is the crafting. Only Dwarves craft so you will want one as your main or an alt if you want to craft yourself. The good thing is the private store function in game also allows Dwarves to set up private manufacture stores where you can get most things crafted from materials for a reasonable price. Some items also require a LOT of materials to craft. So much so that they will take you a very long time if you want to collect them yourself. The good news about that part is anything you can't find or don't have time to collect can usually also be found at private stores in town for a price. The crafting in L2 is rather unique when compared with a lot of other games and I felt you should be told before you came in game what to expect.
