The battle

I reckon that the battle for mmorpg supremacy will be coming along very soon and will be between the 3 companies of Blizzard, Sony and Codemaster. Their mmorpgs (Dragon empires, World of warcraft and Everquest 2) all have similar release dates and are probably the most anticipated of all the ones in development at the moment.

So the battle will commence but who will come out on top? I am looking forward to the blood shed already image

You have really limitted yourself.  There are many other great titles coming out in 2004.  None will kill existing games... they'll live or die on their own merits/faults.  Games that come out need to improve.  The recent batch (since Shadowbane) have all left us feeling somewhat wanting.  I think they need to focus more on community and less on gameplay... but that's just me.  I couldn't get hooked on SB/PS/L2 because there was no community structure to them.  I guess SWG had the reverse problem though... no gameplay, too much community.  But I've no first hand experience there.

Now this is just a guestamit but I would be willing to bet that intially(within first 6 months)  WoW will win out due to its fan base, well polished gameplay, game style and of course the ability to play Warcraft from a first hand perspective.  BUT,  I believe that EQII will most likely come out on top in the long run due to the fact that it is mainly built for the future of games, ala graphics, quests, skills, etc...  While WoW is doing almost everything right that most mmo's have done wrong, they are missing out on something that EQII is reaching for,  and that is to try something new and radical.  I'm sure many will argue with the question of "what the hell is new and Radical about EQII that hasnt already been done?!"  Well, to be honest I could name countless things and rant on and on about it, but truely there are no hard facts on most things, so most is speculation.  But there ARE lots of things!  BUT, to get back to my point in EQII they are trying new things and makeing an attempt at makeing the game evolve.  Most people leave these games b/c they are tired of the same old crap, and eventually they will get tired of EQII some day, but I think EQII is set up to evolve and branch out in more ways than most people can expect.  BUT, I will be playing WoW first when it comes out, but will end up playing EQII probably a year or so later.  I will try both of them when they intially come out, but most of my freinds will be playing WoW so.

Also another game that I think you are totally overlooking is Guild wars.  Though it has recieved alot of criticism about not being a true mmorpg, I think it will ciphon alot of new people into the mmo enviroment and as well, steal alot of people from the existing mmo market today b/c it caters more to casual gamers in more of an extreme way than even WoW!  Reasons you might ask; No monthly subscription, Alot of PvP, Supposedly constant expansions,  Caters well to roleplayers and carbears who want to just quest, takes alot of the treadmill out of the game.  Now, all of those are good, but the last one could be bad b/c crafting is essentially taken out of the players hands. As well there wont really be a higher archy(sp?) of powergamers vs. casual gamers;good & bad.  Also, I could see people getting bored of this fairly fast and moving on, but that depends upon game content, that comes back to the treadmill.  Though one thing that I think they need to change, will be that they need to charge a subscription for the game, without alot of money coming in, they wont be able to staff alot of gm's, bugs will take longer to fix, buisness wise it may be a bad decision.  BUT hey!  We shall see!

there lots of other good games but they wont come out in the near future

Yes Keldar De is the game with the highest depth and has really a different concept but anyway I dont think that you can compare these games

DragonEmpires is pvp centric EQ2 and WoW Pve

the only real competitor for DE is D&L in the near future but this game will come out very very late I suppose

so DE will be the pvp winner ^^ if codemaster (with blizzard one of the best companies atm) can keep their promises

EQ2 and WoW will have to battle it out for the PVE crown ^^ duno which is better because I love pvp and don t have so much information about both...

p.s.: I don t think that guildwars will "steal" lots of customers hence it has no monthly fee it will be the second game for lots of people (I ll buy it too when it comes out...)

Trust me, this year is not all about Codemasters, Blizzard, and SoE. There are COUNTLESS numbers of games that are going to be top contenders this year, Dragon Empires, World of Warcraft, Everquest 2 all spring up easily, but of course Guild Wars looks good, CoH has already been released and it looks great, Freeworld from what I've seen looks really nice, Saga of Ryzom is a distant peeker, I mean this year is one of the biggest for MMORPGs, it's going to be interesting at the start of September to say the least, that's when most of the "big hitters" are going to be released :P. To be honest, if I was a company, I would intentionally hold back my game till 2005, lol.
