It could be your firewall is blocking it. Most computers have more then one and you may need to take them both down.
The same thing happened to me but this happened about a year after I was already playing this game. I had to take down the Windows firewall as well as a firewall I had. When I installed the firewall I had taken down the computers but somehow it would always turn on again. Continue to check that they are down.
Re-install the game. This may also help. Also check their forums for new ports ID you can use as they're constantly changing stuff around for no reason other then to make a change for changes sake.
Second Life is the worse kept game by it's support team. Once you begin to play it you'll see exactly what I mean. They constanly screw things up, including it's player base having to constantly download game content which by the way makes no diference as the game is bugged out to hell.
I stopped playing regularly a while back as I got tired of not being able to tp anywhere. Teleportation is probably the games main thing and the games "support" either doesn't know how to fix it or just don't care enough to. This is one issue that has plague this game for way over a year and it's still not fixed properly. The only thing that gets all their attention is raising prices on land and reducing Lindens you buy for US$.
Good luck playing this game, you'll need it as well as a lot of patience. You'll see!
