I tried it

I did give DDO a chance.  I played for a solid 6 weeks and ran up a number of characters.  I think I was disappointed in the game mostly because the scope was so narrow.  I did not like the multi tiered dungeon difficulty at all. It seemed to scripted after twice in any one of them.

I think they would have done a bit better to have more area to roam, and non instance questing as well.

Just my 2 cents

Valid opinion and DDO certainly isn't for everyone.  Personally I enjoy getting to the action instead of roaming endless hills with mindless mobs.  My wife used to say that all I ever did was run around over hills when I played computer 8)

the trouble with this approach is the countless times you run the same dungeon over and over. the countless days lfg.least in wow or other outdoors you can go kill stuff, potions werent and arm and a leg.

They did a pretty good job with DDO but they botched the new content and released it too slowly. They also botched the xp such that there are only 4/5 quest series worth doing in the game and people feel obligated to grind them. There are a lot of random quests people never touch but they tend to be boring or so hard its unbelievable. The instancing is debatable - have you ever queued for a boss? No. Its fulfilled its purpose but gives a feeling of isolation when 50 people are doing a quest series but you can only see 5 of them.

I played DDO during the beta, what put me off was the bugs and extreme laggyness.

I'm thinking of getting the 10 day trial and seeing if things got polished up.  I've been playing WoW for the last 2 years, but I'm now finding it FAR to time consuming (so much that I can't raid anymore) so I'm looking for something to fill the gap until Age of Conan comes out :)

Kinda in the same boat myself. After 2 years in WoW, raiding with 3 characters (sometimes two raids in one night) plus very actively beta-testing TBC, I finally burned out on WoW. The grinding was already getting to me, and all the additional grind TBC introduced was the final straw.

I don't even remember why exactly I decided to try DDO, but I'm glad I did, I'm actually having a really good time so far. But -- I'm intentionally playing very casually, and when I decided to subscribe, I did so with the intention of doing it part-time like I do City of Heroes where I'll sub for a month or two, cancel for several months, repeat. Although now that LOTRO is finished, the team might have time to start cranking out some quality DDO content. Aside from not wanting to be sucked into a timesink game like I was with WoW, DDO just didn't strike me as a hardcore "play all day and night" kinda game, but maybe it is at higher levels with the dragon raid, etc. I hope not.

I really enjoy DDO. Its a game about questing and that's where it shines.  The most DDO enjoyment IMHO is to be had by forming a regular gaming group, much like Pen & Paper, and questing together. With the exception of the RAID quests, a group of four characters of literally any race/class combinations can do every quest in the game. So there is alot of room for creative builds, no need to min-max, and no need to think in terms of Tank, DPS, Healer. The only thing I would strongly recommend is that at least one character have a level or two of Rogue to get the bonus XP for finding as much hidden content as possible and for disarming as many traps as possible.

As far as repeating content, you only need to repeat any quest a maximum of three times to get the most patron favor out of it, and this can be avoided by inviting in a single other character who has done the quest on Hard one time. Then you can just do the quest once on Elite and have all the favor that you can ever get out of it. It is also possible to play the game totally ignoring favor and never do any quest on anything but Normal difficulty.

If you mostly run in PUGs you will find yourself repeating alot of content, but that is the case in any MMO.

It is also worth noting that they have recently introduced a new type of "wilderness area" to roam around in with continually scaling "slayer" objectives, "explorer" objectives, and special "story" objectives that involve finding uncommon or rare spawns that do not always appear in the zone. The first such zone is a smallish area called The Cerulean Hills, but more and bigger such areas are on the way.
