lol, look. I'm not a mindless idiot. I don't let the fact that the game could suck escape my mind. Of course that is a possibility. What im saying is that this game is deserving of the hype it is receiving. I personally think the game will do great, and believe that FC will pull off a game never done before. Like i said they have the production, so nothing essentially is stopping them. And if you are not impressed by the any of the released videos to the point where you say they suck, then your standards are way to high.
I dont think you are an idiot. And no I am not impressed by any of the released videos but that doesnt mean that my standards are too high, and to prove that I would go back to Shadowbane if I knew that a server would hold 1k+ people at any given time and about 1.3k+ people at peak hours. If you know anything about Shadowbane then you know it was very buggy, but I'd still come back to it and never touch another mmo (except SB2, of course) if only the population was high enough for PvP to work. So, no, my standards when it comes to MMO, are not high at all(as opposed to FPS ). I just want to see actual high definition gameplay videos where I can clearly see game being played for 30+ minutes(at least 5 would be good, like that trailer of Tabula Rasa posted here a while ago). It will not mean "auto-impressed" for me but at least I will be able to get more information than some fly-bys over some hills/jungle/gate. Once again, I'm NOT saying that the game sucks or that it will be a flop but that the all the footage so far has not been as revealing as I want it to be.

What exactly do you wish to see in the videos to impress you? Im just curious because i thought the same thing as you a while back. The videos made me want to stay tuned to this game to see how it does, not turn me off to it.
Anyway, what FPS's do you play? i just installed BF-2142 again out of boredom.
Cant speak for him, but I suspect he'd like to see some video on Battlekeeps and large scale PvP. Most folks would like to see more about it, and see how the game performs with many people in the same area at the same time, and what it does to framerate and so on.
What I've seen looks good...but since that'll be a huge part, I'm hoping to see video of that too, and as soon as FC thinks that it's ready to go, and client optimized...then I'll be happy!
That the game is already amazingly better than all other MMO's, and they are still tweaking the small things. This game is going to set standards for all MMO's. If a company wants to be successful they are going to have to copy Funcom, or fail. AOC will without a doubt blow out all of its competitors. Get ready to finally NOT be let down....finally.
Be careful.
The same words were said about other games that have since been washed away with time.
Let's actually see what happens in open beta this time next year.
haha. Be reeeeaaallly careful. The same words were said about Dark and Light. Almost exactly actually.
Here's hoping the game lives up to at least most of the hype. :)Whoever said that was a retard. It was fairly obvious that a no name company with zero experience in the industry who spent most of their time developing a game engine vs actually making a game were going to shoot themselves in the foot. They were overly ambitious. I, and many of my friends who play mmos, never for a moment thought DnL would be anything groundbreaking in terms of gameplay. The engine they created was impressive though, at least on paper. That made it worth checking out. Obviously since the closed beta testing will soon begin if it hasn't already people will begin to get an idea of whether or not this game has what it takes to make it. I have no fear that AoC will draw a large following from the mmo community. Luckily it is a Mature title so I won't have to deal with too many WoW kidiots. Maybe the OPs source is someone in the closed beta?
Overly Ambitious - Funcom is trying to put real-time combat, massive battles, and top-of-the-line graphics into one single game. (Just something I noticed in the post)
You're statement about the Mature title seems a little naive. That would mean that immature kids don't play games like GTA San Andreas or Elder Scrolls - Oblivion.
I personally think the Mature rating will backfire, but that's just a personal opinion based on my experience when I was younger and how many of my friends were begging their parents to get games like Mortal Kombat and Doom because of all the blood.
That and the fact that there hasn't been anything aside from decapitations that aren't allowed in the Teen rating. The dead bodies in the game and the blood have all been done in games that are Teen rated. I think if they're going to make it Mature, they might as well push the envelope. A body on a stake with some blood isn't pushing any envelope..
Now if it turns out that you can actually gut people and watch their intestines spill out, or that they show things similar to the Tree of Woe in 300. Then maybe they deserve a Mature rating, but so far they're just barely into the Mature zone when it comes to animated violence.
There is decapitation in this game. And as far as I know there will be nudity as well. There is at least one video showing a decapitation. As far as the other stuff, I imagine if you can cut off a head, arms and legs shouldn't be that hard. So you're wrong wrong wrong. And you should research the game instead of talking out of your butthole. And while there are many extremely stupid parents out there who don't pay attention to game ratings. More and more parents, as well as companies that sell games are making an effort to prevent under age persons from acquiring games that are not suitable. Also, since it's an online game and will have a monthly cost that means the parent will probably pay a bit more attention to who the game is being targeted towards. Also many parents now play mmorpgs, thanks to WoW and other family friendly mmorpgs. Hopefully that means they will be cautious when they see a M rating on the box for an mmorpg.
It is pathos we lack, and this lack of pathos makes the worlds we explore quite stale.
Sadly you're very wrong. Every mmo released since WoW has attempted to copy at least some of WoW's modules. THe questing module is a good example. Let's look at LoTRO since that was recently released. There are npc with glowing rings over their heads instead of exclamation points, these npcs are marked on the mini-map with a ring instead of a yellow dot, you can track quests.
/snip
Heh why is it every 'top' MMOG that comes out, people think they invented it all. The whole 'exclamation point' thing wasn't new to WoW. Star Wars Galaxies did that first. They also could track quests, you got waypoints leading you to said area where you need to work on the quest, etc.
But the point is over-all moot. Because it's just common sense for one MMOG to use features found in previous ones that worked good. The exclamation point thingy is an example. Another is Instancing, 'drag and drop' chat links, random spawning, 360' flight, and more. All these were first introduced with Anarchy Online, and almost all MMOG's include at least a few (generally instancing and drag-and-drop chat. IE linking items in chat so others can see the stats.
I beta-tested LotRO since last summer. While early on it's quite similar to WoW in it's quest setup, use of 'rings' like the exclamation points, etc. But as you get higher level it starts playing very differently. IMHO it feels more like DAoC then WoW. But not everyone agrees.
So yea, I think to expect MMOG's not to use systems that were very good and successful in others is natural. However, if all you do is copy another game and insert no real originality at all, that makes for a boring game. Thankfully AoC, like AO before it, is highly original. Good point about the swg thing. I honestly can't remember now whether SWG added the exclamation points after WoW came out or not. It doesn't really matter. The point I was making was not how innovative WoW is, because it isn't. I can't remember now. I think I was just pointing out to someone that their idea of a next gen mmorpg wasn't actually next gen because all of the features they thought a next gen mmorpg would have have already been done before in the industry. I think it was that bonehead that said the mmorpg industry doesn't copy ideas from one game to the next. What an absolute crock of poo. No wonder companies can get away with cloning previous made games, slapping a new title on it, and using a cheaper graphics engine, and making money off of idiots like that. Hey look guys it a next gen korean mmo! Look there's questing now!
It is pathos we lack, and this lack of pathos makes the worlds we explore quite stale.

This is the kind of vids I prefer:
etc
There is also one video a while back ( 1-2 months ago) posted back here (link to it anyway).
Hopefully some closed beta people will make us some vids with FRAPS and post on youtube.
EDIT: my Sig has the name of the game I am waiting for. I've played the original et for over 3 years.
A little off topic? Heh. Well I just like how people make posts saying there isn't such and such in this game because if there was blah blah blah. Obviously this person doesn't know a damn thing about the game. I guess if you only read other people's posts and never actually educate yourself concerning the game you're posting about that will inevitably happen. I don't really care about the nudity. I'm more interested in a realistic level of graphic violence. I want to be able to dismember people/poke holes in them. It's that next level of realism that I think games need, especially mmorpgs in order to earn that true next gen status. Granted it's not for children, but there are plenty of gamers who aren't children so I doubt it will be a problem.
As far as the skeptics are concerned I'm with you. There are a lot of crap mmorpgs out there that don't deserve my time or money. I have tried many of them. Being skeptical isn't the problem. It's when you refuse to educate yourself in order to remain skeptical. That kind of attitude is pathetic. It is so convenient to say you don't think something is a certain way etc. and leave it at that instead of trying to find out whether you're wrong. That's just lazy stupidity.
It is pathos we lack, and this lack of pathos makes the worlds we explore quite stale.
I really want this to become a great game.. i really do.. but i TRY not to get my hopes up too much.. as many stated it´s really easy to become disappointed. The chances of me not buying the game however are minimal. The only downside i see at this point is that i will most likely have to buy a new computer...
I've been watching this game for about 2 1/2 yrs. now , and every time I see a new movie clip I can't belive that a game can look that good ! And when I here about the kool and different aspects in this game I don't even feel like playing any of the mmos I am playing . Just want to wait for Aoc !!!...Everything else seams to be a waste of time !
Do not mistake Indifference for Hate. Nor Kindness for Weakness. for this is the Bane of Judgment !
Yea theres a little nudity. Haven't you seen the videos with the Succubus that's not wearing a top?
But don't get me started on America's 'fear' of breasts. I'm a proud American myself, but really it gets to be to much. 'Oh noes, my 10 year old daughter saw Janet Jackson's nipple for a 1/10th of a second during half-time last year!' Oh hell, who really gives a shit. She's going to have her own in a few years.
America is perhaps the greatest country to live in IMHO. It's very secure (dispite the fear mongering of the current administration,) and is the richest and most powerful country in the history of the world. It's basically the modern day Rome, only it's been around for about 220 years, not 1000 years. And Rome wasn't impervious by any stretch of the imagination. I mean the Irish basically threw them out on their arses and told them to never come back again, and they didn't.
But this countries core religious right beliefs really tend to get on my nerves. Breasts, anything sexual, is 100% taboo here. I mean come on, boobs are the first thing you think of after being born.. 'damn I'm hungry, *suckle*.'
I've gotten off topic but basically I'm just trying to say that a few naked breasts in a game shouldn't make it Adult Only. Hell I think it shouldn't even be Mature only. Now if the game had full nudity, or sex, Adult Only for sure.
That brings me to another point. Here in America we go bonkers about teen sex. But barely 100 years ago.. BARELY, if you weren't getting married and starting to pump out kids by the age of 15.. you were growing up to slowly. Really quite amazing how society changes in as little as 100 years.
Preach it.... On a good note - Atheism is on the rise... in a big way.
wh0 g1v3s a sh1t? act superior to someone who likes to talk sh1t in games or have fun. Even when they would probably own u.
anyways, I've been watching AoC for a little while now, and I do like the combat and style of the game, but I do agree that the trailers (atleast a few of them) are a letdown. The game has beautiful graphics z0mg!1 but that really isnt enough. So many games come out and have good graphics but gameplay is poop. Hopefully the videos they release as we get closer will have more in-depth group and actual gameplay. I've seen almost every video out now and I've seen maybe a total of 10 seconds of a class other than a human warrior ( or w/e its actual name is) and the spell animations werent at all impressive btw. I guess all I can do is wait and see how it turns out, but I wont be expecting too much this time, I've learned.

Well, to start, every race in AoC is human.... so far. They've shown in-game footage of riding around on your horse impaling ppl with your spear and they've shown how archery works. They've showed very little on magic though, so i have to agree. But at the same time, the game doesnt seem to suck at the cost of videos we have not seen.
I have to say I'm surprised about how little of the magic I've seen. Not to say big battles and sieges. Sure, there's that one little clip where you get to watch lots of folks run into each other, but it kinda moves on from that rather quickly. As to the magic, what I have seen is very lackluster, and I was surprised by that.
On a side note, as anyone seen stealth or climbing in action?

After the tragedy of Vanguard, no more buying void promises, unfounded rumors, exaggerations, sorry. I have also become increasingly agitated over the super hype surrounding all the beta undercover, secrecy, NDAs, etc. with every game as if it is a Pentagon project or something
Don't misunderstand me. Like you, I have been quite excited about AOC, but I am not spending a penny before trying it out for free for a while. They don't let me ? I simply move on.
Gone are the blind fanboism days, now we know better

They didnt rate it mature according to your standard man. They simply just made the Conan universe according to the novels by Ron E. Howard. It was a violent, crazy universe with a kinda sexual undertone. They made it like that, and the esrb gave them the mature rating.
And if your going to try to sell the product, why not mention the mature rating like they do. Its the first MMO to do it, so why not mention it. The fact that you can cut off ppl's heads in a fight is pretty cool if you ask me. Drunken fighting in bars sounds fun to me. Riding a horse and impaling someone with a spear sounds cool as hell. May not sound crazily violent like you want to see, but it will still have its awesome sense of realism.
Seph... it's Robert E. Howard.
I'm also looking forward to the release of AoC, and I'm currently playing (and enjoying thoroughly) LOTRO. However, there is a reasonable chance that I may not play it. PvP games bring out the worst in people, and it kills communities. Any kind of player vs player combat brings out nasty and downright sociopathic people with no life other than to mercilessly slaughter any player who can't stand up to them.
I will not play a game with those people again.
Because of the lack of PvP, so far I am greatly enjoying the community in LOTRO. I can gather a group of random people and achieve something without people whining about loot or having to worry about being ganked. You know what? That makes me happy.
If Age of Conan turns out to be full of WTFPWNBBQ people, I will be out and I will not look back.

But dont forget that with open pvp, people being jerks start getting a reputatuions, and sooner or later they become an outcast from groups, and guild even sometimes have KOS (kill on sight) lists to kill those jerks. Of course at lucnh it will be chaos until people start being organized and then order sets in, thats what fun pvp is.
