My Older brother picked up the game, and ive been watching him play with his friend a bit.   Hes only level 10 or 11 i think (his friend is 24-25 or something).

Is there anything to look forward in FFXI? content (NOT PVP! I could care less about PvP being in or out) Ive seen him do nothing but farm for hours on monsters for (piddle) xp. is it always like that?. And whats with the low amount of gold at the low levels. with sitting looking like it takes forever to heal up (lotsa downtime) the potions and stuff are EXPENSIVE, and it doesnt look like you are given enough gold to keep your self geared up and well with items.

And the thing that makes me turn away and look in another direction is the death penalty. how can anyone agree with that xp loss and de leveling? (seems like the harshest system) (ive never played EQ) i mean death hurts you.

What other things are there to do besides fighting for hours in the level grind (and then i guess after 15 or so you can solo anymore... which you think about it its kinda like the FF games on consol. you were never fighting alone unless in special battles, other wise you had a party)

The graphics look nice and everything, but Graphics dont make a game (Ac2. Lineage II. Horizons etc etc of great graphics crap gameplay)

Hows the skill system?. i saw at level 10 or so he only had like 2 skills maybe? Faststrike and some 2 hour recharge skill (like faster attack for 30 secs?) (im vague on the class system, but i understand you have to level from 1 again on the new job =/. doesnt sound like fighting the lowbie monsters over and over again would be fun)

Really im just looking for straight info from you guys (ive checked sites and stuff, but its easier if i can organize my thoughts into one post and have the answers set without having to scrimage all over kingdom.com and maybe find them..

--on a side note... those posters who just flame or say "THIS GAME SUCKS!!!111!!" go elsewhere im turning a deaf ear to you--

Well...er. Your friends where lvl 10ish so that explains much since those are the most horrible levels in the game imo. At level 12 you'll be able to join more descent parties of six people and with healers so they remove any downtime if they are any good. I'm not a high level myself yet so I can't really tell you anything of content at that point. But I understand that it's more of the same but with nicer armors and weapons, bigger monsters and better loot just like in any other mmorpg.

You can fish, mine or do some crafting to. And gaining money isn't that hard either. Sell your loot at the auction house for money and don't coun't on big money drops by mobs.

There are weapon skills wich you gain with using your weapon of choice alot and these are used in the skill chains that form an importnant part in party play. Then there job abilites wich you gain by going up in level in a certain level.

The quests and missions are nicely done imo and they tell a nice story with cut-scenes of important npc's. This is the first MMO I played with an immersive story. An if you like JP this is the game for you image

Depending on your profession you can easily spend more time trying to farm money then anything else.  Two of the worst for that are Ninja and Ranger which use large amounts of money to perform their basic job skills.  This can quickly suck the fun out but there are some classes that are not so farming dependent.

Imo most of the game is middle of the road as mmorpgs go for content and entertainment.  The thing that finally drove me off was that there are only a few different creature models and most of them arent very good.  It became too repetative fighting the same creature with a different name for 50+ levels.

There are some things the game does very well though.  Skill chains add a great deal of strategy to combat and the auction house is the best way to buy and sell I have seen in a mmorpg to date.  The many modes of transportation are excellent and fully fleshed out as well.

For the record, anyone who has and still does play FFXI will tell you that lvl1 - 15 are THE worst times you will have in the game and the turning point for anyone who will quit. Those lvls seperate the devoted to the carless people who just liked the pretty pictures on the back of the box and begged their momy's to buy it for them.

If, however, you can make it through the lvl grind of 1 - 15 then your in for a real treat, once you attain lvl18 you are now able to recieve your sub job, which of course you must do a quest for. Once you obtain a sub job you can start to lvl it up. ( on a side note a tip to all FFXI players : The smartest thing you can do is when your first job lvl hits about 15 or 16, stop, and change jobs to whatever sub job you were planning on using. lvl this job up to about 3/4 of your main job's lvl. So lets say you wanted to be a BLM/WHM, and you lvled your BLM to 16 or 17, go ahead, stop, and lvl WHM to about 12 or 13, then hop back on your BLM and get to 18 and do the sub job quest, and walla! you dont have to be a noob again! Now you have a fully lvled sub job and you can continue to join pt's and earn exp! )

Now whats left is to lvl any job to lvl30, then you can do any of the advanced job quests, in a way, getting an advanced job is sort of like actually starting the game because this is the job you will devote the rest of your time to. Curently i am planning on becoming a SMN/BLM ( i'll post later on how that works out )

As for gil ( money ) being hard to come by, its not hard at all if you spend a little time strictly on making gil. Fish, farm monsters for specific items that sell well on the AH, mine, grow plants or craft, FFXI has eliminated people just mindlesly slaughtering anything that moves in the hopes that it will drop some big cash, because it wont. There are many ways to make gil, as of right now i fish for moat carps, the easiest fish to catch in FFXI, they currently sell for 4k a stack(12) at the AH and sell faster then you can run to your mog house.

With 300+ quests and missions to keep you occupied during you lvl grind downtimes, there is PLENTY to do in FFXI. So give FFXI a chance, if you have the time to devote to it, it is DEFINATLY worth it.

I must say, I keep hearing negative things about FFXI. That is pretty sad, I was looking forward to playing it some day. I guess that I am giong to have to go with a different game now.

I have a friend at school that thinks the game is great, so I may still give it a chance. I think that a lot depends on wether or not you end up meeting cool people. My friend knows one of the guys in his link shell in "real life", so that gave him an instant in. It sounds like you have to have a lot of time to get anywhere in the game, but if you have that much free time it seems like there could be better options for your time.

I played into the 50s before I quit so dont be fooled into thinking the game gets tons better.  If anything I enjoyed the lower levels more.

Despite the fact I didnt enjoy the game though, the points I made above were not meant to dissuade anyone from trying it.  I think FFXI has some great features as I pointed out and depending on your taste you may love it, hate it, or fit somewhere in the middle like me.

Making money isnt hard, it just takes forever and as I said your class plays a big role in how much you will need to farm.  Most rangers and many Ninja are pretty honest in admitting they spend as much time doing crafts or farming for money as they do fighting for exp or doing quests.

I just started playing a week ago. I am on Seraph and do not know anyone who plays. I am pretty much playing solo. I am a very shy person on grouping with ppl. I have had too many bad experiences with ppl.

I am lvl 12 Windhurst Tarutaru Red Mage. Someone told me to change weapons since I was engaging with a wand. I was happy with the wand. If I decide to go after it being more damage then I can always take up a real club. I agree that the first few levels were really hard for me to make money. I notice that to get a lot of the items for repeatable quests did not seem to drop much for me. That was till I started killing tons of that specific type of monster. I love the way monsters look except the birds. I understand everything looking the same. Would be cool if some of the monsters might be different in color but I like that they look the same.

I don't like the death penalty but am not complaining either yet. I will have to wait till I am higher level. At the moment I have lost my level 3 times but that is fine. My most fun is fighting the easy prey. Sometimes they can really take it out of me and I have to kick in gear but I get to kill more before leveling. I did find out last night though that fighting tougher creatures than easy really made my skills advance though.

I have to say that I am going to have problems with the game if I don't make any friends. I don't mind playing alone alot. I would like some ppl to chat with occasionally though.

I like the crafting from what I have seen. I am trying to decide if I want to get rid of some stuff from my mog house though since I have it full. image

I understand some will like and some won't. I really do like this game though. I hope that I can keep from getting bored with it because I am playing alone.
