I am looking to buy this game. I was wondering, for a first time player, which one should I get? I look online and see all these different covers, I see Guild Wars Factions, what should I get?? Please help me.
I'd recommend Guild Wars Nightfall It's very first-time-player-friendly because of the Heros system. After that I'd say Prophecies, then Factions (Factions focuses much more on PvP, which you should only really try once you have the hang of PvE) GL & HF
What the guy above me said. Only thing to really add is that Nightfall is first timer friendly, but with the addition of heroes from them most people do not pug. There are still some out there, but most, from what I can tell, go with guildies or hero/hench. If you do get Nightfall, you get access you the Dervish, Paragon and all core classes*. Basically, every profession but the Ritualist and Assassin. Likewise for Factions. You get the Ritualist, Assassin and all core classes, but not the Dervish or Paragon. Prophecies (the original GW) only gives you the core classes.
*Core classes are Monk, Ranger, Warrior, Elementalist, Necromancer and Mesmer.
Have to warn you. Guild Wars is not very newbie friendly. Not because it takes a long time to get all the good stuff. It's because the game's complexity to overwhelm unprepared newcomers.

Well, actually it's easy to get into, it just gets complex over time. That's why I still consider Prophecies' learning curve the best, although Nightfall has those handy heroes.

You can stay in the newbie areas without any penalty while you learn the mechanics of the game. As matter of fact you can stay in any area until you get used to it.
So do all three games have related story lines or are they independent? I was looking into this game as well. If I did get it, I would start with Prophecies just so I can go through each story line. If I buy all three are you able to use every class in any of the three campaigns?

The storylines are somewhat linked (it's a trilogy) but there's little you need to know and you can start playing, say, Nightfall right away - the games do their best not to spoil the other chapters' storylines.
First off, I would advise you not to buy all three games immediately but rather get one (either Prophecies or Nightfall are usually recommended, I prefer the first) to get the "feeling" of the game, maybe finish the campaign, and then proceed if it leaves you wanting more.
To answer your question, yes, if you have all three chapters you can play any class in any campaign; however, keep in mind that you can't start in any continent with the class you want. Characters created in Tyria (Prophecies) can choose between the 6 core classes; those born in Cantha (Factions) can choose between the aforementioned 6 + Assassin + Ritualist; lastly, those from Elona (Nightfall) can start as the 6 base classes + Dervish + Paragon. Nonetheless, once you're off the first "newbie" zones of each continent you're free to boat travel with any character to the campaign you want after completing a specific, simple quest on that character.

The games are independent, but the stories are related. Which goes from Prophacies -> Factions -> Nightfall.
If you buy all three, you'll "eventually" use every class in any of the three campaigns. But you must start from your own starter area.
I just went out and purchased the original Guild Wars so hopefully I will have it installed and patched so I can check it out tomorrow. Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do.
