With more than eight million subscribers, World of Warcraft dominates the online gaming market but some strong rivals are gearing up to take it on. ...

Some older games are taking on WoW too. Star Wars Galaxies is revamping to be more fun for both existing and new players.

WoW's success, said Jake Neri, producer for Galaxies at LucasArts, has meant everyone is seeing more players sign up.

"The player base for MMO games has exploded," he said. "We see new people trying the game all the time."

"And," he added "we have some die-hard folks that will never play anything but Galaxies."

The strong licence and offline following is also a big help as is the fact the game is set in a science fiction rather than fantasy world.

Galaxies launched in 2003 and has been tweaked a few times since as its creators realised what people wanted to do.

"Galaxies was one of the first MMOs," said Mr Neri. "There was no handbook on how to do these things."

The series of changes has aligned the game more closely with what players actually do. For instance it has led to the number of available professions being cut from 32 to nine.

The extensive tweaking has given Lucas Arts a "baseline" to keep everything balanced, said Mr Neri.

With that done, Mr Neri said, Lucas Arts had plans for a series of updates which included a beast master expertise system that would let players train and breed pets in the game.

During the gestation process players would be able to tweak the creatures to produce strains never before seen.

Also coming was a storyteller system that would let players set up and run their own themed events in game. The events could just be a party or a specially-designed combat encounter.

The game, said Mr Neri, was all about the players and what they do with it.

"They make the place come alive, just by their playing style," he said.

I think someone's been reading a lot of Smedley press releases.

There was a time when the BBC actually did good reporting, but like most nowadays, they just phone it in, literally--and they will take corporate PR as gospel unless they have exceedingly strong reasons not to do so (that is, if a given corporation's reputation for honesty is the story).

Apply lemon juice and candle flame here to reveal secret message.

Durrlolz. There were enough MMO's out at the time to make someone realize that a lot of what they had implemented sucked. Definitely not one of the first.

There are A LOT of young kids trying SWG these days. Believe it or not. I play maybe 2 hours a week tops, I'm getting bored, but every time I log in, there are more and more noobs.

Lol well i guess we know where the games development money went for may. As for that interview/journalist i think he should be given a drug test as soon as possible and a mental health exam. Something is seriously wrong and dilusional with guy.

*Games on our site will be treated just as we treat people. Unsubstantiated comments about specific or general games will be penalized in nearly the same way attacks against people will. The exception is that you can say mean things about games provided you back it up with reasons.
Example: "Game X sucks." is not a legitimate comment. "Game X sucks, because..." is acceptable.

While agree World of Warcraft will never compete with WoW, I will never say WoW is better. I will say thsi, that reporter is a dumbass. Creature tamer is not something crazy and new, it is some before the nerfed SWG. The profession system was one of the games best points. Star Wars Galaxies will never rise to it's former glory of awesome gameplay, because they want players. It wil be fading away soon, and I dont' think you will see another Lucas Arts MMO for a while. A jsut want to see a Star Wars MMO made right.

WoW will shut down their servers in some 12 years.

If SWG is still alive at that point, and has at least one subscriber, it *will* beat WoW.

The devil is always in details.

I dunno people still play Starcraft and i'm sure they'd still play Warcraft if there wasn't a 3rd. Only reason WOW would be put to rest is if WOW 2 came out but Blizzards history i'd expect than in 2040 lol.

I expect WOW to last 20 years.

I have simply lost faith in most of the sci-fi MMORPG's I've seen around, I'm putting my faith in the Firefly MMORPG that's supposed to be coming out 2008 I might try the beta if I can get in and they start development at all.

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.

That's piss poor journalism.  One should at least take the time to inform themself on the subject matter before doing a piece.

    "one of the first MMOs?"
