i was really peeved off when i learned that Lord of the rings online was to be released in Australia on the 8th of May. this may seem like a small annoyance to some but to me i really REALLY want to play a good mmo right from the beginning. i came into WoW about 2 years after its release and yes it was good but i really wanted to see it grow from start to the present. anyway enough about my ranting
i would really REALLY love for another MMO to get me lost constantly. WoW achieved this (to a certain extent) but i really want more. i really love exploring so decent looking lands AND a decent variety would be nice. as for size i know this game has just started and will no doubt grow but i do like a big world. as for gameplay i am all up for a WoW clone style game and i am willing to learn if its not. i hope endgame is nothing like the nightmare of WoW. having to get a group of 20-40 people organized AND keep them playing for 2+ hours is NOT fun. i would also like to play a tank style class (can take the hits and somewhat dish out the damage so i dont NEED someone else to do the killing) and i love dwarves. my final question is on gear. does the gear look like decent hero gear at the end of the game (and even throughout) like will a dwarf tank be wearing full plate that makes him look like a damn good tank.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I love LOTRO exactly because of the exploring aspects of it, the zones feel different and don't simply look different (as in WoW.) I've only fully explored 3 of the zones as I was wanting to kill everything, do all the quests I could and stood around chatting to people for a fair amount of time.
The classes in LOTRO are fairly unusual I haven't come across anything like them in other MMORPGs, some are fairly similar to other classes in other games but there's always something that just makes them that little bit odd (and fun) to play.
Your only comming into the game a couple weeks late, so youll still be able to see it grow i think.
Its a really fun game, enjoy.
Don't do it. Truly the game is not that good. There is absolutely nothing to recommend it over WoW or EQ or any number of other games out there. I've played over a dozen MMOs and this one held my interest less than just about any of them. After 2 weeks I have no urge whatever to log in so I can grind the same mobs over and over while I wait 2 hours for a group to do a couple of quests.
Stay away. Even if you are a huge TOlkein fan, the "epic" quest line based on the books, while enjoyable, takes a couple of hours of time, spread out over many levels, hardly enough to justify getting the game. I was rather disappointed to decend into Rivendell to Elrond's house, only to find Gandalf in the library, looking completely ordinary and a bit bored himself.
Wait for something with some punch to emerge.
The game is not for everyone, but I recommend giving it a go. At the very worst you've spent money on a game you can play for a month (longer than most single-player games).
I myself have played well over a dozen games (see below), and unlike some who think innovation is the Holy Grail, I have actually played innovative games (again, check my sig). Innovation is not all its cracked up to be.
LOTRO is a solid, fun game.

But then again, folks in the same Kinship can't even agree on the game, eh, Cerion? Half our kinship quit in disgust after the NDA was lifted, leaving Cerion and a few others to soldier on.
Don't worry, dear Cerion, we'll eventually find a game we all wish to play; unfortunately, it aint this one. Say hello to the Snow Monkeys up in the Misty's for me. C'est le guerre!

Its does have a story line which keeps you interested as you level. I would say that LoTRO is a excellent casual MMORPG to play. Yeah, you got a lot of folks racing to 50, but getting there and doing everything the game is giving you to do is a whole other thing.
Dont be quick to judge this game, give it a chance, once you hit around level 20-25 then discuss your thoughts. You will be surprised. (BETA does not count). This game has alot to offer and has alot of potential as well. Kinda reminds me of the old SWG Community and game Pre-CU of course.
ATTENTION: If you are highly involved in another MMORPG, dont even waste your time trying to play this. You gotta go into this game with a clean thought and no distractions from another MMORPG to compare it with, cause if you do, you will just be another critic saying .. Dont Believe the Hype ..
Currently Playing: AO and FE.
hehe this amused me...
Even the guys saying this is a good game are saying it compares badly to existing mmorpgs out there... So whatever you do, don't compare them! They will make you think badly of LotR! lol
This is a pretty damning, but of course true, statement.
you arnt playing from the start anyhow anymore, so my advice is to start EQ2. It's just a better game all round then this cynical over hyped product.
If you chose to go with the hyped up flock, good luck to you, but me? I'm off to play STALKER or whatever until a decent mmorpg decides to show it's head.

Aye, it has split more than a few kinships. Ours included to be sure. Though it may have divided kinships, it need not divide frienships. I may really, really like vanilla ice cream, and you may like Cherries Garcia, but at the end of the day we can have a beer and discuss it.
As for the Snow Monkeys, I avoided them in beta, and see no reason to alter that now.

Well in my honest opinion this game is fun, hype people say? Why would you even want to HYPE up any game? What is there to gain by doing this? (insert quote here) Anyways back to the game.
If your tired of all the other mass multi online playing games out there and want to try something new, this is the game.
You got alot of other mmo's coming out real soon, try different things out, you never know what you'll miss. So what if people are saying its good or if its bad, try it for yourself, because everyone is different when it comes to games. There just happen to be alot of people that love the Lord of the Rings books/movies, so of course your going to have a huge following as well.
Give it a shot!
The graphics are good, even on bad computers, and despite rumors to the contrary, the world is much larger than it appears on the map and rather than have lots of areas of dead space, there's tons of content around every corner. (slightly unrealistic actually, to have so much danger everywhere you run)
It is not so much a WoW clone but it does follow the quest heavy, (more so than WOW) somewhat scripted format, especially in the early levels. Once you get up near the late teens, early 20's you can mix and match a bit more and I doubt you could ever do all off the lower level quest...you'll level past them before you can get to all of them. (so playing multiple characters can result in different leveling paths in the early going). The interface is close enough that any WOW player will immediately feel right at home (though you probably won't feel the need for a lot of UI add on mods to make it playable)
End Game - Hard to say.... not many people there, and I don't think there's alot released yet. We do have raid slots up to 24 people (6 people per group btw) so there will be raids. Only time will tell if we'll need to work as hard to get them completed like in WOW or whether we'll need to run them endlessly to gear up our characters (some people say we won't have to, I really don't know)
Dwarf Guardian is the tank i play, and its a fun class however note, all of its best skills come after being hit...reactionary chains that take a bit of getting used to. While we have some decent taunts, one Hunter or Champ doing max damage can easily pull the aggro off of you which I find a bit annoying. Guardians are not the only Heavy Armor wearers either, Champions and Captains both get to wear it, our big defensive advantage lies in our heavy shield (its an offensive weapon for us as well)
As to armor looks, the upper level ones I've seen in screen shots look great, but the breastplate my 22 Guardian just replaced looked like a trash can lid painted with red spray paint that said "do not throw away". And strangely enough, I replaced it with a purple Medium armor item, because the medium armor gave me much better stats and more armor. Go figure....
PVP - had to make a note here. PVP here is quite different, you will never kill another player character except in a duel. We have a feature that lets anyone level 10 or higher to create a level 50 Monster character (which can be leveled up in terms of skills and abilities) which you use to fight level 40+ player characters in a BG called Ettenmoors. There are PVP levels you can achieve as well as PVP rankings that fluctate based on how many kills (for both MP's and PC's) you have.
Its not for everyone of course.... but most polls run on these forums show about 50% of the people who try it like it, 10% are sort of so-so, and 40% just hate it.... you won't know which one you are until you give it a trial.

Why do they hype games?
er.. I really need to answer this? Are you *that* naive?
Don't bother giving it a shot. Save your money, spend it on somehting you will enjoy, go out with your friends. Anything is better then the mind numbing boredom of this 'game'.

Besides that, you will have folks like vesavius and people that are'nt like vesavius, is'nt the world so unique.
