Im surprised so many people dont like this payment plan...to me it looks really fair. Think about it you buy the box you get everything you pay for including unlimited online play. Then if you ever decide you want more just subscribe and get access to all the new content. Its almost like saying you buy wow and get to play to lvl 60 (or now 70) free and continue playing forever...but if you ever decide to try raiding THAT you have to subscribe to.
Oh and for customer support ...9to 5 support is what you usually get with most games ...if even that.
I don’t see how paying 9$ a month for more features constitutes felling better than everyone else?
I would pay money for good content and support, as well as stable servers not run by children.
Apparently, its not an offline game, it does have that option.

I don't think I am willing or ready to support what this will mean for the single player game market. I was really looking forward to this game, however I don't think "MMO" ever came to mind when following this game, let alone "monthly fee".
I think this post sums it up nicely. It's not so much the arguement of pay to play versus not pay to play.
It was the expectation that this was another single player action RPG, with online play, ie Diablo, Dungoen Siege etc.
And now all of a sudden(granted they have been hinting at this several months now) it's a MMO that is pay to play(if you want to have more then 3 online characters and not have to wait in queues).
It just seems that the pay to play component was tacked on at the end as a "cash grab".
And to the other point of the reply above. Is this setting a precedent that ANY game with multiplayer should now be pay to play? I'm sure if the developers have their way it will be.

Its offline, online, or online with more options (for a fee). Pick one.
No, its not setting the precedent. Its simply a matter of what you value and what type of experience you want.
BTW: most multi-player games, like BF, BF2 ETC.. someone IS paying for you to use there servers.

because if this is a success more companies will do the same thing...eventually we will be paying monthly fee's for off-line games aswell....and if this were truely a mmo there would be uproar that people who pay more get extra benifts..look what happend archlord with group payment methods....they quickly re-verted back a standard monthly fee, if hellgate was a mmo i would have no problem paying a monthly fee but its a single player game and until recenly it now has some online components..i think they are stretching what is and whats not an mmo.

The funny thing is this game is just like diablo , dungeon siege etc if they never bothered with the extra options of pay for extra no one would of said a thing. Personally I never get free updates on most games I buys ...so please try again to explain to me how this extra option is bad thing.

Aagain they are not forcing you to pay ...you can buy the game and play for ever and ever online offline or even use the cds for frisbees.
If however you want more content well then you have to pay,,,but again you wait 2 years then pay 9.99 for one month and get access to 2 years worth of extra content:)
Are people just getting confused about what this game actally is or is it just me? As someone just said it's still a single player game just that they 'request' players to pay more of optional content instead of racking out an expantion every 2-3 months.
As for the 'only resently' comment about the 'MMO' options, I'd like to point out that it was oringally stated that Hellgate will be the spiritual successor to D2 however it would include all those features that the players within D2 really wanted.. There was no 'oh, lets add in MMO type content to ask for more money' about 2 months ago, practically everyone from the start expected this, Hell as it's already been stated it's the flipside of GW, funny really as Arena and Flagship came from the same company.. and heck even Battle.net had it's own source for fnding you just never noticed it.
I don't see what the fuss is about they aren't forcing you to pay, being 'Elite' doesn't make you any 'better' you just basically get more maps to play on... Isn't that what you already do for Gears of War on the Xbox with that optional map pack?

its more like the person who doesnt pay the monthly fee is not getting the full game...and has to queue to play.
I havent lost my interest in the game, seeing as until I have actually tried the game and the multiplayer part I cant really say I know if its worth it or not. Though I really lost ALOT of hype about this game.. or the little I had, I was expecting to maybe have some fun with this game like I had with Diablo 2... but its not the same when I have to pay for it or not pay for it but watch others get benefits over me because they do pay.
Hellgate will have a 30-40 hour single player game as well as online play (like Diablo). The online game will have more content and stuff added to it over time and have tons of people (like a MMO).

yes but you wont see other people running around in the game world with you.....they have to be in your group if you want to see them ala guild wars.
I have no problem at all with there plan. I think its great actually. They gave me the option to pay for more content, guilds, and no queues if I want. Which the que part is my favorite. I pay to play games not wait in a que like most the other mmos on the market. I have left many of games for long ques.
What I don't understand is why you expect to have the same features as paying customers? Or is it the fact that we have to pay for more features in the first place?
And I have been following this game for a long time. It has always had the same model it does now. They have just expanded on there initial ideas.

they have always said there would be online or multiplayer capabilities, they only mentioned the item shop, as i like to call it, recently...seems to me they saw how well mmo's are doing and decided to tack on an online fee so they can ride that gravey train...good luck in playing the game..i will definitely be avoiding it.
Sigh. Have you people played the game yet? Then how can you whine? Come back after the game releases and complain to me about how having the option to play an online game for free is a poor value. Complain to me that 9 bucks a month is expensive when the average online game costs $12-15. Complain to me after you play through the single player scenarios that you did not get your moneys worth from buying the box.

Funny, I don't remember Diablo 1 or 2 charging a monthly fee. Nor did Dungoen Siege, Sacred, NWN etc. They seemed to be able to pay for their bandwidth. We'll see how much extra content we really get, and how much we end up paying for, ie how many expansions the game will get that we pay another charge for on top of the monthly fee.
I have no problem paying monthly fees if the game warrants it, this just seem to much like an obvious cash grab more then anything else. Oh well, we can all decide whether we buy it or not.
They didn't charge a monthly fee, however the "new content" for all of these games was not of commercial release level.
If a small monthly fee guarantees me lagless online play, no queues, access to more content and items and guild management options, I'll gladly pay.
What we have to realize here is not everyone can afford to pay a monthly fee, for them, I hope the singleplayer and "non-elite subscription" options offer something worth playing. I fully understand the people who simply do not have the $10 per month, or are not willing to pay that much money for a video game.
However, we have to understand games aren't a public service, they are products that are created to generate revenue. The developers and publishers of a game are fully entitled to price their product on their own terms, and that's that. Please, do not pos stuff like "We've been betrayed/scammed", this is simply not true. Money runs the world, and I'm glad computer games are still making money, or we'd have a very limited array of games to choose from.
In the end, its your own choice. If you don't want to pay, then don't. If you are willing to put up $10, go ahead. There's no need to make this a huge issue. If you really want to play the elite content, be prepared to pay for it.
played the game at E3 and talked to a programmer form flagship about it. Its like Guild Wars (from the bit I played). you meet up in town and then run off into instanced adventures that dynamically spawns level geometry that will the experience should never become repititive is their hjope. Im uncertain how many people can congregate together in towens i hope its unlimited or has a really high cap
little do most players know even city of heroes is all instanced- it just never gets so full it spills over into another instance. but all the dungeons are instanced like this game
not sure why hellgate isnt listed here its as much MMO as guild wars & city of heroes
Btw combat system blows away everything else really. you actually aim your attacks etc it was really, really fun. I sit at their booth for bout 2 hrs playing the game i missed out on a bunch of games cause i couldnt pull away from their booth lol

are you so retarded you dont rem who funded FREE Diablo 2 ie Blizzard
for this game Blizzard isnt paying for all the hardware and bandwidth so its pay to play if you want more than you got with Diablo2 which is the current standard
READ THIS AGAIN for the game price you get WHAT you got in Diablo 2 but if your willing to pay a fee you will get a better online excperience and get the equivalent of free expansion packs over time
the complaint about elite customers logging in 1st -hell yea you think someone paying a monthly fee will be willing to wait behind a horde of tightwads-guess you guys are unaware NCPlay is charging a monthly fee for its beta game Dungeon Runners2 do you? My god i can imagine what you would post about that.
Clarification 2
single player is COMPLETELY separate from multiplayer char cant be moved from one to another
dunno how many char you will be allowed to save but if its too low for you I bet someone will make a mod to increase that

Actally reading a resent interview over on IGN they actally WANT Free (ie Single player/Free multi) and 'Elite' to interact A LOT in fact they wamt players to see everything an 'Elite' had and does, even get access to the housing and guild just not own 'Elite' based content, but the main question asked was
Would players lose all 'epic' chars/items gained if the dropped sub?
The answer was: NO, you keep what you have gained via 'Elite' HOWEVER you can't access/use it until you re-sub..
So basically you CAN infact drop and re-sub whenever you like WITHOUT being 'punished' for not being a subber..
Oh and yes Dungeon Runners uses ruffly the same system, if you don't like HG:L's system don't go near DR
Sorry to say, but this is probably the dumbest pricing scheme I have seen in a long time.
Not many are going to pay for this. I am surprised at Bill Roper and friends, I thought they understood the industry better.
I had intended to purchase this game, but I would not touch it with a ten foot pole now!
Guild Wars for the win here. I at least get to choose whether I want to purchase the expansions or not. Hellgate's method is to pay for unseen content. The guild thing is over the top unreasonable too.
And for some edification for some of you challenged people out there, this forum is all about constructive criticism and your whining about it is worse than those offering differing opinions.

little do most players know even city of heroes is all instanced- it just never gets so full it spills over into another instance. but all the dungeons are instanced like this game
not sure why hellgate isnt listed here its as much MMO as guild wars & city of heroes
Bring on the WARRRRGGHH!
