No more L2 knock-offs!

I've been lurking MMORPG.com for a while, looking for something interesting to play, trying to get away from WoW. I'd just like to express my disgust for the SLEW of games out that utilize the Lineage 2 engine. Guild Wars, being the most popular one. I have nothing against the graphics produced from this engine, but the control scheme is horrible, along with the GUI most of these MMOs use. Other games that utilize this engine are even more gut wrenching, i.e. every MMO that seems to be coming out of Korea. For the love of cheese and all things that are dairy products, STOP using this disgusting engine! (examples of these games can be found on NCSoft's website or gPotato's homepage)

Er...while I'll agree games like RFO are using the L2 engine, I don't think GW uses it.  You might be confusing the point and click nature of the game which is most common in Asian based MMO's, (but not just games coded by NCSoft)  but I do believe GW's was created  by a firm right here in the USA.

Methinks you are showing a bias....  while I prefer WASD doesn't mean I'm not open to other control/UI options...

It's the point and click nature of the games that I hate most. If I have to point and click in a fully 3D game to move my character, there is something wrong. Are you sure GW doesn't use that engine? It looks and feels exactly like it.

Heh, that's very funny.  It's not the L2 engine that is being used.  It's the UT engine.  L2 uses a modified version of it for their game.

Whatever the hell it is, it sucks horribly.

Usually a game engine refers to the graphics subsystem programming which in L2's case is the unreal engine as others have pointed out. The actual control scheme is often the user interface and is different programming than the game engine I believe. Guild Wars is a custom graphics programming engine built from scratch by the Diablo programmers which formed their own company known as Arenanet

I hate the point click interface as well but I can manage to put up with it if I really like a game that uses it.

Well I do think Guild Wars is a horrible game, along with about every other game that seems somewhat like it or Lineage 2. I think that what it boils down to is that a majority of MMOs these days aren't worth my time.

Just so you know, I play Guild Wars (Love it so start bashing me now if you want), but I never use the point click and move.  You can setup the game to use the WASD.

I do wish Lineage 2 had a WASD setup, but they don't.  And I'm aware that you can use the UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, arrow keys, but it's god awful.  It's very strange.

Imo, Point & Click is superior over WASD when playing an MMO that is not have any twitch absed content. its an RPG, not a Shooter. Point & click only requires one button, WASD requires 4 of them and thats just to move.

Lineage II does and always has had a WASD setup. You just have to be smart enough to go into the options menu and check the box next to "Press Enter for Chat". It doesn't exactly take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

WASD in Lineage 2 is very unresponsive. its much better point/click

Yeah....L2 uses the UT2 engine, which is a good engine. I'll agree with you that it is used a LOT. But I can tell you that it is *not* used in RFO and I'm quite sure it is *not* used in Guild Wars.

If you're talking artistic style though, that is another issue.

The point and click interface is superior when having to control more then one character, but if you are controlling only one character in a 3D game it seems very awkward like in NWN/NWN2/GW/ETC.  I believe WASD is superior if you are only controlling one party member.

WASD in Lineage 2 is very unresponsive. its much better point/click I never said that I used it, just that it is there. A lot of people fault L2 for not having a feature that it does have. In L2 everything has an animation tied to it. That is why when you turn in WASD or with the arrow keys it is a little slow. That is because your character actually moves his/her feet to turn instead of just statically spinning in place like most other WASD default games. I actually prefer the point & click over WASD any day as it is much much more precise. What could possibly be easier than you click where you want to go and lo and behold....your toon goes to that exact spot! People hooked on WASD should just go play FPS games....it's more suited to that genre anyways.

you pretty much hit it on the head. its all in the game design as to what sort of movement works best.  i think a couple other folks mentioned it also

but it is nice that they put WASD movement in L2.  such an under-rated game.  I hope they make more like it :)

Personally, I love L2, I do wish there was a WSAD key movement, but who knows, maybe L3 will use it.  But what other games use the "L2 engine"? I play GW from time to time,  but i dont belive its the same.

you derailed yourself.  L2 does use WASD just not by default :P  you need to set it in options
