Well,

* You *could* have joined the 'Play the World' free trial event.

* You *could* borrow the disks and get a 'Buddy Key' from a friend.

* Your *could* just fork up the $40 instead of trying to get a freebie.

* The 'Free Trial' is being done with Buddy Keys. So no announced general trial, and do not expect one for months.

I would also love to try before I buy and I think it is ashame that they do not offer this option from the get-go. It is pretty much a standard industry practice nowadays. Being permanently disabled and constrained by a strict budget not everyone has the $40 to just throw away if they do not like the product. Either way IMO they are losing customers by not offering a trial because I would really love to play this game and purchase it if I liked it. Unfortunately there is not an option to do that.

So you shout at the poor guy because he didn't get in on the 'World Tour' / Open Beta, he perhaps doesn't have any friends and he'd like to try it.

It's not uncommon for MMOs to have a free trial.

Give the guy a break.

You make many assumptions! I did nothing to deserve a response like that. Besides you have no idea what my circumstances are and had no reason to repsond like that. The ignore function just might get its first workout. Thanks for your kind and inciteful response to things you have no idea about. Cannot wait for other people to see what kind of person you are

Hey dudes,

Cheers for the replies. I did sign up for the Open Beta but being in UK I had alot of problems obtaining the client or even creating an account.

I always play on US servers but Turbine redirected me all the time to the European portal lol.

Anyways I am returning to my home country and the proxy won't be an issue hence the qn.

Edit: OT - Are there any designated Oceanic servers for LOTR?

Successful MMO's don't have free trials until their numbers start to fall. That's actually the standard for free trials. So we will see you in a year or 2 on your free trial.

Why would they have a free trial the servers are so full their is que times to get in

and they already had open beta for like 1 month but i guess you where stuck in wow

or maybe if u bug your dad he might be able to buy the game for you:)

Erm can you afford to spend 5 bucks?

Buy a buddy key off ebay with CDs.

Everyone wants a free hand out O.o

If you don't have the 50 bucks to spend then you shouldn't be looking to spend it at all.

If you are so tight on money that you have to be VERY VERY careful about a tiny 50 bucks then you shouldn't be spending it at all.

Does that take care of everything? Yep!

While all of what you posted was true, your method of delivery was a bit crude and condescending.

While most of the MMORPG.com community are aware that LotRO had the Open Beta, it is quite possible that someone who was only passively following the development of the game was not aware. Now, finding the game to have been released, they might be interested to try the game before buying. This is a perfectly legitimate and reasonable request.

Furthermore, even if the game is the same now that it was in Beta (I don't know, so I can't state one way or the other), some people would rather play a trial that takes place in the production version of the game, as opposed to one still in beta.

Long story short, while I *DID* play in the closed and open Beta, I'm interested in a trial in the next month that will showcase some of the post-production fixes and enhancements of the game. I'm sure I am not the only one.

I don't think that's a fair response either. Any game can benefit from releasing a demo/trial, especially MMOs. By giving a player the ability to taste the game (and captivate them, if the trial is done well), a company can actual generate sales/subscriptions that they might not have gotten - especially if the player was "on the fence" about buying the game or not.

On the flip side, if a person DID buy the game and decided they did not like it, they would have lost their $50, and the game company would miss out on the recurring monthly subscription fees anyhow. Furthermore, by offering a trial with a credit card required, game companies stand to generate extra revenue anyhow, based on people who actually forget to cancel their trial memberships (been there, done that)!

Why are there so many idiots on these forums? I mean can't people be a little more polite and actually answer the guy properly.

There could be any number of reason for him not wanting or not being able to shell out 25 quid before he tries the game. I too wish to try it before I buy it considering the slating its been getting.

Instead of being a prick! why don't you say 'A good place to obtain a buddy key would be ebay for a much more affordable 5 bucks' or something.

although i know many of you want to try the FREE trial, this is the PERFECT way for cheaters to make money...if it was me who was in charge i wouldnt be giving out any free trials whatsoever because if you're really interested you'd buy the damn game and if you think you dont want to spend that much money then dont simple as that...but MMO's handing out free trials imo is making lots of hackers dupers and cheaters really rich....

You know what... until I read this post, it never occurred to me to go look at eBay for a free trial key. That someone would sell something that is freely given, and for all practical purposes worth little to no value. (nor sells for much I'd bet)

This is just so outside my frame of reference, I would have never even thought to sell one of my buddy keys there so this idea didn't come to mind at all.

Its a good suggestion though, glad someone mentioned it.

Hope the OP and others find their keys somehow, its a good game and we can always use some good new players to join it.

While I can understand your concern in this point (the possibility of exploiting using trial accounts), if the game company requires a valid credit card (as opposed to allowing an unvalidated account), that is typically a deterrent for those trying to automate/exploit. If a trial is done well, you can also restrict some functionality (a la WoW's trial, where trial characters are not able to trade with other players). Given, all this requires some extra planning, but I think the possibility of generating additional sales/subscriptions/revenue by offering a trial may be worth it (RoI considering).

Now that I am able and have more time to research for more in depth info about LoTRo I might be able to make a decision without a trial. In the end though nothing beats the try before you buy option. The more I read about this game the more I want it
