I purchased this game a month ago and tried to play in on my 1st gen. Dell Xps (3.2g x800xt 2g3200 ram). It ran like a dried slug. I uninstalled it and thought the game was horrible.
Fast forward to today..I got a new system (mach 5) and reinstalled the game. Let me just say this thing is jawdropping. The enviroment is realistic; the spell animations are awesome. Although I am not a big fan of the character animations, Vanguard has my attention for now with the game.
Yes, it kicks LoTR Shadows of Angmar square in the nuts.

I agree with you the Vanguard looks better then LotrO but only to those able to run it decent. But i fully understand LotrO being more succesfull and more people playing that game. Its solid on most systems and the minute you walk into LotrO it does feel abit more immersive as in being in a tolkien fantasy as with Vanguard it takes abit more time to get yourself within the gamewold. I prefure so far Vanguard it offers me allot of things i do not seem to find in LotrO. But still fully understand those who choose lotrO over Vanguard. The will be actualy very different games as in playstyle, where i found myself in LotrO continues running for quest and grouping when needed. Community in beta was one of the best times i had (till open beta started, their came a whole lot of mess people in the game which made me leave LotrO but i have to be honost actualy every beta i've been in always closed beta or release where great open beta somehow brought in a totaly different crowed which for me wasn't the pleasant kind but the more vocal and loud people came in. This became very noticeble at beta stress test 2 in LotrO when we saw all those complaing people that seem not to understand whats a Stress Test.
But still i said this before even if Vanguard was just as polished as LotrO is at release i still believe that LotrO would atract more players then Vanguard would. Like i said they totaly different as in game play atleast for me they are. Still not installed the game (LotrO
will one day install it but first let the storm of the EU server blow offer and maybe the expansion that is coming juni might make me reconsider to play LotrO, but for now very satisfied with Vanguard and enjoying that game. I'm just glad we got LotRO so people that might be disappointed with Vanguard might enjoy that game. Like i always say its about fun and if a game does not give you fun one should seek a game that is fun. But one should realise to try and keep respect to those that might enjoy something that you or i don't enjoy.

Everyone should stop talking about this game...lol. It is a good game that is put together REALLY poorly and everyone should cancel their accounts for about 6months (like i did) and check out the progress then. I think brad mcquaid will realized he failed, fire himself, get someone new in there and fix VSoH....so it can be all it can be. It has the potential just not the team.

I love love that game!
Amathe, the OP didn't say it didn't run. There's a big dif. between not running and running like crap, and not everyone has the tolerance to play a game if it's running like crap on thier syste. Especially when the game also looks like crap at lower settings.
Get real Amathe that cpmputer is as low end as you can get now days and anyone running it wouldnt exspect it to run anything that comes out this year on all but the lowest settings and judging from my old system which had the X850 Xt it probally played the game just not as good as the OP wanted
Go play any game out there on the minimum system specs listed on the box and you will be playing on the lowest settings you can, f atall, Some of us just bought brand new cause we can Amathe my old machine ran vanguard ok it was quite playable would it run it on every setting maxed like most of us prefer to run our games No it wouldnt
You will be upgrading to shortly Amathe unless you like playing your games on the lowest settings lol
Here are the required specs for Vanguard from the SOE website:
Required Specs:
SOE does not say "game will play like crap" or "like a slug", as the OP put it, on these specs. They don't say you will have any kind of problems running the game at those specs. You know it will have problems. I know it will have problems. But the consumer who relies on what SOE advertises may often not know. So all I am saying is, if those specs won't run the game and produce reasonable performance, as apparently they did not for the OP, Sigil needs to change what it represents as the required specs.

Heh. I'm not a fanboi, far from it. I am always lurking here but rarely post.
Here is the actualy post: http://forums.station.sony.com/vg/posts/list.m?topic_id=7544 that link is still a SOE site isn't it. And they do actualy say: In order to play the game on the lowest settings, the minimum requirements must be met. This is in no way a guarantee that the game will play smoothly, or that the sound will work, however the game will run. In other words one might use words like "the game might play like crap"
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes runs on the Unreal 2 engine. The Unreal engine series is among the most powerful gaming engines that have been created to date. This means that without modern computer hardware, customers will experience some issues playing the game smoothly. Before playing Vanguard, take a look at our minimum and recommended hardware requirements:
MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
• Windows® 2000/XP/Vista
• 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible computer
• 100% DirectX compatible keyboard or input device
• 2.4 GHz Intel processor OR 2400+ or higher model AMD processor
• 512 MB RAM
• Vertex and Pixel shader 2.0 compatible hardware with 128MB of texture memory
• 100%DirectX compatible sound card
• 56K + Internet Connection
• 16X Speed DVD-ROM
• 20 Gigabytes Hard Drive Space
RECOMMENDED SPECS
• Windows® 2000/XP/Vista
• 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible computer
• 100% DirectX compatible keyboard or input device
• 3.0 GHz Intel OR 3500+ AMD processor
• 2 GB RAM
• Vertex and Pixel shader 2.0 compatible hardware with 256MB of texture memory
• DirectSound/OpenAL compatible audio hardware
• Broadband Internet Connection
• 16X Speed DVD-ROM
• 20 Gigabytes Hard Drive Space
In order to play the game on the lowest settings, the minimum requirements must be met. This is in no way a guarantee that the game will play smoothly, or that the sound will work, however the game will run. To alleviate performance issues, we highly recommend a machine with the Recommended Specs. Just because a computer works flawlessly for other games on the market does not mean that it will run smoothly in Vanguard, as it is one of the most hardware intensive games that has come out to date. That, coupled with numerous other players on-site, and one can see how a system might not only grind sometimes, but occasionally stop completely while it tries to catch up.
The purpose of this post is to help everyone realize that as long as a customer meets the specs requirements, there is a troubleshooting process in place for the customer to get their issue resolved. Making assumptions based on other products working flawlessly, when those products are often based on other engines that are completely different from Vanguard's, will not help an issue be resolved. Remember that no matter how good a system was six months ago, it might no longer be the latest and greatest on the market, and it may not run Vanguard now.

I went ahead and purchased this a month ago after hearing some good things from friends.
The game has improved. However, it is still very buggy, the classes are still not ready for primetime, and by all appearances there are massive exploits that should have been caught in beta or soon after release.
I've cancelled my account, simply due to the fact I won't pay to play a product that really has no business being out of beta. A few bugs are understandable. I should not spend 1/2 my city time skydiving via falling through the world.
The absolute best thing that could happen to this game is if SOE buys it. Fires all the VG people. Then subsequently rereleases it under a new name when its finished without the bugs and with enough content for a current MMO.
Sadly, I don't see that happening, so this game will be relegated to the Daikatana pile of games with potential run by men who have reputations far exceeding their actual talents.
Vanguard really isn't that bad of a game and has some interesting concepts however as has been the trend for the last few years it was released in bad condition. Sure lots of games have had almost as rocky of a release but they weren't up against Wow's expansion. The thing is Vanguard even with some new concepts is nothing special even if it ran perfectly on an commador 64. It has no appeal to any niche group of gamers (other than the Brad Fanboys) and isn't hands down better than any of it's competition. Yes it has a lot of potential but very little of that potential is currently realized and what the community is left with is promises for the future.
I personally haven't been happy with what the MMO developers have been getting away with for products for awhile now and unfortuneately for Vanguard I finally had enough of paying for barely playable games even if it means I'll be forced to go outside and talk to a real person. I think that I am far from alone in this respect because for the first time I have watched a games population crash and burn quickly even in the face of elaborate promises of future gaming pleasure.
Now the sad part is that I think when SOE inevitably takes over the project it is doomed DOOMED doomed!!! Everything the community was promised VSoH would be will be replaced with EQ/WoW cloneing technology. MMO's afterall have become the new cash cow for gaming business and rather than break the mold SOE has shown a tendancy to follow the business model to the T. If that seems far fetched load up VSoH and take a ride on the new portal technology which effectively reduced travel to an inconvenience rather than the feature it had been promised as.
Stop whining and login so I can kill you!
to play VG..and you're coming here to tell us that the game plays great on it? No kidding... (I heard VG can even access the the 4th dimension if you run it on a Cray)
Hey, I'm all for upgrading my computer, but do you really think MMO's should be optimized to run on a boxes that 1/1000 gamers can really afford? Its going to be a year or two before the technology of a Mach 5 comes down in price (they are probably a bit lower already) to a level that I'm willing to spend on a gaming computer (about 3 grand) even if I build it myself.
I had a friend who loves VG...he went out and bought about 2K worth of components and built what he thought would be a great computer to play VG on... and he has to run it at about 1 notch below best graphics if he wants to keep his FPS above 30, even in cities. To say he was disappointed doesn't do justice to his real feelings. (nor his wife's, who wasn't keen on the purchase)
Well, Brad himself has admitted they did make an error in this regard, they thought your technology level would be cheaper and more commonplace by now, and when it didnt happen it basically doomed them to failure. Even now he's hoping that by years end we'll all be using Mach 5's and VG's problems will go away.
I'm just not seeing that happen......

I really didn't follow this game. I was a hard core lifeless raider in EQ and the 'Vision' wasn't aligned with my new casual self. Plus Brad came up with fun concepts like med'n in a spell book. I really didn't know what was in store for Vanguard. I'm not able to play a game like a job and that's really who it sounded like he was trying to appeal to. There were even comments like they were trying to hit a niche market and making a lot of money wasn't neccesarily the goal.
I got a free box around release and I thought I'd try it out. First, I spent 3 grand on a XPS a little over two years ago. I run on high settings and the game looks great. The character models and gear graphics are kind of bland. The toons look a whole lot better when you can broker buy gear around 10ish or so. They look like crap when they start off. I've got a bard that is level 6 who looks like he is wearing burlap sacks and I don't feel compeled to play him. I don't have any problem running on that old system or my new precision laptop. I think I've CTD once and usually get good FPS but that does vary. The game is playable for me and I like the art style. If there is only one thing they did right, it was the enviroment art. It's just that the game world doesn't feel all that alive.
Since I didn't follow the game, I had no expectations. I thought the game was a little buggy at first. This was mostly for broken quests which I haven't run into any as of late. Getting stuck on rocks or such in the world is still an issue. Performance wasn't my problem and the biggest complaint that I have right now is that it's a group oriented game that lacks people. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not because of the personality type that the game drew originally. To tell you the truth, I thought the playerbase was the biggest problem with the game. There were a lot of jerks who thought game skills or a game that required skills, maybe not skills but lots of free time, made them elite. The problem was that they weren't and Vanguard gameplay is simple with the exception of reactions or whatever.
So, I had many issues with people and found that most of them didn't know about CC. I struggled as a chanter to get groups to work with me. Still groups would take on everything WoW-style. Sometimes we'd live and sometimes we'd die. It's was the dying that irritated me. If there was no death penalty, I could care less. Neither running back ithrough a dungeon naked or summoning the goods at a full exp hit were good options. The next biggest issue with the playerbase was that people would try to bite off more than they could chew with greedy thoughts of loot. I have a pretty good grasp on what is possible and not through trial and error. The peer presure HS comments on my bravery and willingness to take chances sometimes changed my mind but the outcome was always predictable. Again, the death penalty was an issue here. The last problem was the selfishness of the players who focused on their questlines. I had a really hard time running groups in the game and now groups are almost impossible to form. It's a hell of a one person game really.
I'm having fun boxing and playing with my wife. It's only the pre-grouping 1-20 game but it's entertaining. I think there's a lot more to the low level game than higher up. I've seen some improvement in the playerbase. My hopes is that it will form into and EQ or EQ2 community. Basically, nice and helpful people and not those who have a need for a game so fill up holes in their lives or set them apart from whomever. I have seen some light onto this lately by meeting a lot of helpful people who must think my alt is a new player. I think the one's that are left playing really like the game and want new players to feel welcome so that more will play. This is opposed to the way some people treated some others on the first month or so.
Bottom-line is that Brad tried to get the elite croud. I'm not sure if elite is the right word but tried to get the people who like to put in a lot of free time into game progression. I think the problem here is that people who have a lot of free time don't have much responsibiliies. Kids in HS and college have a lot of freetime but not much money. People who don't work much have a lot of freetime but not much money. So expecting to find a people with a lot of freetime AND money to might be a very small niche. Fortunately the game doesn't require that much time after the exp adjustments. It definately can go beyond the 'elite-gamers' model. I see a bright future for the game if SoE invests in it. If not, I got my money's worth.

Unfortunately even if SOE buys it, SOE's best talent right now are doing a stellar job of fixing EQII. Scott and Co. apparently came on and did Faydwer and are now working on Kunark.
Where will you put your talent if your SOE? A huge expansion that will add much needed name recognition and nostalgia to EQII or towards VG?
A 3.2GHZ computer has to cost upwards of 2500 if not more. I don't know what kind of enviroment you come from, but here in the US we aren't all able to throw that kind of cash just to play 1 game out of literally thousands. It doesn't doesn't happen, and never will. Its a very rare person who stays at the top of the computer specs.
LOL /drool I want a mach 5 too.
P.S.- it would have run just about as good on your previous system with some appropriate tweaks.
Performance has always made people shy away from Vanguard. Heck, I was about to quit after playing for 2 days and write a nasty post on the official forums when I was in beta 3. When I went to the site, I happened to stumble upon Morts tweak thread and that changed my opinion 100%. The game went from crap to gold in about 10 minutes.
It's easy to say a game sucks hardcore donkey if it looks like a bunch of random laggy crap on your computer.
This is true with every game company, try playing Oblivion on a computer that meets its min. requirements, its not pretty.... Given VG didnt run all that great on highend machines when it first came out... But its gotten better...
If that was true, then Alienware, Falcon NW and several other highend gaming companies would be out of bussiness... Also there is a difference between a 3.2GHZ Single Core processor and a 2.2GHZ Dual Core processor...
If you are running a single core processor then you have obviously not tried to play any of the newer games like Supreme Commander, Command & Conquer 3, etc.... Your machine would run pretty slow with the newer games..
The game is not horrible. 5 years ago it probably would have been a hit.
But this this not 2002, and not being horrible does not make it GOOD.
