actually monkey would be the best IMO

not for the healing but for 2 skills (aegis and/or judge's insight)

with aegis for x time you block/dodge (cant remember all i know is that you dot get hurt) 50% of the time and another % with whriling defence... so you basically create a invulnerable character for x amount of time with regular projectile or physical attacks) AOE spells kill you... )

and the build i use which kills MM necros's army in PvP

    is the barrage ranger

judge insight --------- holly dmg + 20% armour penetration

Barrage-------- (elite) shoot up to 5 arrows to hit 5 different enemies in proximity of eachother

and a max sundering bow (also armour penetration)

the rest you mix with interupt skills and the whriling defence + troll unguent (and the spirit that adds +6 dmg to all arrows (i have a blank on the name)

aliance battle i destroyed a necro's army of minions in barrage shots 223 dmg to 5 minions per shot.

regular PvP characters 50-89 dmg per barrage shot to anyone else (yes including tanks) and barrage if not interupted recharges in less time that it takes you to fire it. and with big expertise atributes it costs 3 mana to cast

in PvE you do 120dmg to lvl 18-20 and 80dmg to lvl 20-24 (numbers are averages)

Oh man, Sundering is epic bad on a bow.

At max, Sundering is a 20% chance of 20% armor penetration. That generally nets you around 4-6 additional damage about every 5th hit if you're lucky. For Barrage play especially you should use a Vampiric bow string (added 5 armor ignoring damage every hit and it heals you the same for each hit).

Monk is a very good secondary for Ranger, though. Although, you'll only need about 10 skills maybe from the whole class, and most of them are in Smiting Prayers. Elementalist works for a Conjure Barrager, but depending on where you're playing the above build can be superior. I've also seen a very successful /Mesmer interrupt build. And Necromancer has plenty to offer.

(Also, reading comprehension ftw :x )

ive though of using the vamp string... just never got around to it, now that you mention that.. i think i will make meself a vamp bow ( i sometimes use my gargash thing (energy +1 on a succesfull hit) and that seems to be working wonders for my 0 cost barrage

For the PvE ranger, Elementalist secondary is a fine choice as it adds damage. In PvP, in this metagame about 90% of the rangers you'll find are Monk secondary because of Mending Touch - a skill that removes 2 conditions from you.
