If this game is already available to play for free as Granado Espada, why exactly should I buy this and pay $8.99 a month PLUS pay for items to stay competitive with the rest of the community? Anyone? Anyone at all have a reason other than "Because the North American market has demonstrated that it's willing to bend over and pay for everything"?

So just wait another month and someone will be able to answer yor question then.
1: Granado Espada Singapore has not yet confirmed a pricing scheme. it could be a monthly fee.
2: the items of the item shop has not been confirmed. Since we have a monthly fee, chances are big that the items for sale in the item shop do not have an effect on the gameplay, for example, more customization options, such as costumes. things like that.
You basicly said it right. they do it because the NA market has indeed demonstrated it is willing to pay for a monthly fee. a monthly fee is still the norm here when it comes to quality titles. in the asian market, the item shop model is the norm. Keep in mind that the Singapore version, assuming that it will have an item shop, will probably require you to purchase items to stay competive. this won't be a problem if your not going for the competive pvp content (which would be a pity, because GE has some deep pvp gameplay), but if you are, chances are big you will have to purchase items from the item shop.
We don't know all the differences between K2 network's GE and IAH. We do know that K2 networks version will have more customization options at launch. we also do know that the entire script has been re-written so that a western audience understands it. there seem to be many more changes, but we don't know what those changes are.K2 network hasn't revealed them yet.
Its Korean (or wtf ever Asian), and its a reason for me not to buy the game. One grindfest was enough for me.

I lol'ed @ Peenk. You can go try our American (or wtf ever European) grindfests then~ w00t they're uglier and I get to pick and forage for berries and minerals, because THAT's not a grind THAT's a quest... Something you don't know about most Asian and Koreans are that they see past all that, so they don't mind getting to the basic fundamentals of an RPG. EXP. I got tons more to say but I'll waste time later.

Any game with cash shop, it be p2p or f2p, has in focus that those with cash shop itens will have advantage. Since the MUST BE item is the xp rate enchancer/bonus.
