Being born into a MMO....

What would be your view on being born a certain race randomly selected by the game when u first purchase the game and log on.  Obviously this woud be good idea for server balancing when it comes to faction vs faction.  Personally, I wouldnt mind the concept.  I know some will be totally opposed to this idea since they would like to pick what race they want to play.....but might be a neat idea for 1 mmo to try it out.

Do you mean that you will start as a baby and then grow up over time or just that your race will be picked randomly?  I'd rather choose the race myself though I think it would be interesting to start as a little kind an then grow as you level up.

It would be interesting to me to try that out.  But, the downfall would be when you dont like the random thing you had been given to play as.  Then hope that the next random race or class if it would do both was something you were hoping for.  If they had two options, random and your own pick, that would be cool cause then nobody could complain either way.  So yeah, I'd like to see that just for sh*ts and giggles.

nice idea but a couple problems spring to mind and that is first of all the factions would need to be tyhe same class, skills like wow to be fair which for me sucks as the only difference is skin which i cant stand. you could go for different class's and skills but that would promote selling newly born characters to get the class etc that you want. however it is a cool idea. especially if you introduce a family function where you can add say 5 character names to a family so that you and your friends are garanteed to be on the same faction. its doable but it would need to be done right.

I would try a MMO with that feature. The whole game would have to be amazing to have it
  • Well...Probably not being "born" as a certain race but just created a certain race.  I believe horizons was gonna do that whole family thing where u where born and had a family.  As for being certain classes..etc,  you would be forced to play whatever class that specific race has to offer  :(    I know its a tough concept...prob wouldnt go over to well.

Well, this is not a bad idea as long the game did not make you choose a specific class when you start. You could choose what you wanted to be based on what you do in game. Trading from place to place would provide skill points in those skills related to trading, manufacturing goods would provide skill points or exp towards those skills related to manufacturing, fighting, etc....

This would work if it was implemented this way. Then the player woudl still have a say over what his/her character would be in the game world.

I like the idea, and with, for example, a system wich lets you choose class at a specific level, it would be perfect considering the fact that the only thing you wouldnt really be deciding on your own would be what race you play as.

Sounds like a good idea though, especially if they had the whole, Start young and grow older as you level up system :)

No unless you can reroll and try again, but that would make the whole concept pointless, right? Why no? - Because there are complete no-no races (and classes) in every game, choices I would not in any case enjoy... For example Elves in LotRO, Gnomes in WoW, Males in Guildwars...

...bein forced to play a Gnome Lady in WoW would take the fun out of the game. Period. As I regularely choose minority races and classes anyways (dont know why) I don't care about meeting my twin (which is probably the only good reason for randomizing race specifications)...

Though I DO think that Elves and rangeresque classes are badly overpopulated in most games and need regulations somehow...

Don't think it would be very popular.

o hell no!!! like wow for example, if im born as a female dwarf..... nooooo! i would uninstall right away!!!
  • I think ppl would take more pride in their race though...considering they are gonna be it for a long time.

I am more in favor of XP bonuses for faction who have less poeple if the game is RvR/PvP orientated (Duo to the XP  bonus new player will actualy be in favor of joining that faction) not the random thing. It an thing you have to be stuck with for the rest of your play time and you can join your friend when you want, unless you keep making an carater till you hit the rigth team.

I remember a game that was going to have have aging. After 500 hours of gameplay, your character would die of old age. You could have a kid though. And your child would learn the skills you knew at a very fast rate.

The way you would have a kid was - you would walk up to someone of the opposite sex , and you would both press the procreate button.

Games need to do more crazy stuff like this.

That sounds like a horrible idea, then all the time you wasted would be gone because of an aging system and you'd have to be a child ( restart? ).  Im almost certain that 90% of the gaming community wants they're characters to stay at the max level, instead of starting over.

edit : Also, the being born idea is in my opinion slightly worse than perma-death. Alot of people will waste time making chars over and over again till they get the one they want.

    I like this idea.

A few things you should be able to do though is still pick sex and class.

Also what about people coming from other games that want to play together? If its an RvR game and they get different races they wont be able to play together.

You could still pick any of the classes that are available for your race.  I would imagine ppl on forums would try and trade accounts with someone else unhappy with their race...to get the one they wanted.  Guess picking your sex would be alright too.

The child would relearn the skills so fast that it wouldn't be like starting over. And you could learn the mothers and fathers skills.

If you are a fighter, and you want your son to be a fighter/mage mix, then go find a mage to procreate with.:>

I still doubt people would enjoy this "feature" or whatever anyone would call it, if i wanted a game that was trying to be realistic to the point of having children and aging, id either get a fantasy mod for the sims or play Oblivion.
