Alright, as I had posted prior, I was considering getting the game, and wound up doing so. After a couple days playing it, I've formed my starting opinions.
Visuals: So far the game has the best visuals of any MMO I've played. The characters, monsters, scenery, all of it is excellent and very well polished. Granted some of the armor looks a bit....dorky (mostly the low level helmets, go figure)...it is still very beautifully rendered. The fog elements in the marsh are a very nice touch.
Sound: The music is also very well placed. The battle music kicks in nicely, the music in town fits the mood and setting wonderfully. The only complaint I have so far is the player made "bard" music gets a bit annoying from time to time, but fortunately it can be turned off.
Gameplay: So far I have a level 10 captain and a level 7 guardian. The classes are fun to play, though some of the animations are a bit awkward looking. The quests are typical at worst, the mundane; "kill [insert number here] of the [insert monster type here] plaguing the [insert location here] and report back to me," or "talk to [insert person here] who lives at [insert place a short distance away here]." Crafting is interesting, though I haven't managed to do a lot of it yet, though I have already made myself a decent greatsword even at low levels. The only gripe I have with the gameplay is the first auction house I've found is in Bree, which is a good distance from the starting town of Archet.
Overall: Overall the game is a good bit of fun so far. The levelling is rather quick to 10 and the story has shown a good bit of promise. If you're a fan of LoTR, I'd highly recommend picking it up. If you're considering the game, I'd say you will *probably* enjoy it, but I won't guarantee it. I am waiting to see how things shape up at higher levels. Though I would like a more difficult and "hardcore" game than this is alleged to be, it's shown to be a lot of fun and a good way to kill time until Warhammer releases, unless I become totally hooked on this one.

I have only been playing for less than a week, but I have found myself drawn to this game. Yes, the questing seems the same as other mmos, but what did you expect?
The visuals in this game are beautiful. Running on med-high settings makes a big difference. I agree with your point about some of the animations, but some of them are hilarious! The bouncing bear (when killed it bounces about a foot off the ground) and the sliding spider (when killed shoots about 10 feet away.)
Crafting is interesting…I don’t know if I like the interdependency thing or not. I do like the fact that you can make pretty good weps right from the start (or pretty close to it) that are better than drops.
As far as having to travel a long way to the AH, I agree. I did link my map to the milestone to the closest AH. Guess I’ll have to park an alt toon there and mail stuff in.
All in all I’m hooked.
I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.

Once ingame how often do you really look at you character anyway? Different strokes for different folks I guess. Myself I am glad they devoted time to adding content and adding to the game world because that is what make the experiance for me rather than a EQ2 style character creator. If you are really into character creation that much might I suggest

it doesn't even have a monthly fee.
