Easy for me to say ; AC2. Big budget game, first real next gen game, Microsoft behind it and it flunked.

    Either:

    A) Anything using Unreal (sans Lineage2)

    or

    B) Mourning (or any following names therein)

MMORPG history? lol. I love how people post on here with games that are very recent. You know MMOs have been around for over 10 years, right? Your list should say "Biggest Failure in the last 4 years".

I say AC2, seemed nice at first but limited skill progression + NOTHING like AC1 probably help shut it down. Its almost like they were designing this game for the 5 - 10 year old range.

His·to·ry- 1~ The past events relating to a particular thing

2~ The branch of knowledge dealing with past events.

The Length of time they've been here doesn't matter. Just thought you should know that.

As for me I think the cup goes to DnL. And I don't even want to talk about what happened to Earth and Beyond. EA had to be dumb to shut that game down.

This poll should be named the biggest failure in the last few years.

There have been bigger failures back before mmo was even in the vocabulary of the populus.

There are many games that worked hard to be on your list but you don't know about them.

Well like i said before mmorpgs have only been big since UO an EQ so ones that didn't have hype and wern't popular to start with wont make it. Even if they were failures noone really cares about them and considering the genre really started in the late 90's i don't see anyother failures. Also while i don't know much about some games i have played the all and i do know the news and and everything about them like how they failed.

Also some games are not considered failures like LOTRO and maybe DnL shoulda been there instead when i originally thought. However LOTRO just doesn't live upto the franchise and even though it has the sales that doesn't make it a success IMO. DnL however i was going to put on there but i just thought it was a small indie type game and never had a good budget + i think everyone who knew something could see it wasn't going to be any good.

LOTRO ? You must be a long time Hobbit hater. Based on the score here and sales world wide ,its a hit.

But as for as the SOE related titles , Muhahahahahaah /hifive.

It's very polished and has very few bugs, every other game on the list had lost of bugs and other problems ect when released apart from maybe Dungeons and Dragons but thats different.

Most call it a failure becauses its just a biliant carbon copy of wow, it plays and feels like WoW and whats worse the devs even admitted to ripping things off from WoW. The gameplay in LoTRo to sum it up sucks, its boring, repetive by lv 6 and their skill system is crap too. Bascally the game was a total letdown compared to the hype.

AC2 is pretty much of a no brainer, they had to shut down the servers, although I wonder if SWG can continue much longer, the servers are so empty, you have to wonder about how low a suscriber base they will allow before closing them down.

Lots of flops in this genre.  Do you include those that never made it live?

How about Shadowbane.  Everyone wanted a hard core pvp game yet when they got it they did not like it.

As to Lotro, you have to be delusional to put it on the list.  Probably the most successful MMO since Wow.

Not any game in particuliar.  A concept:  Raiding.

Raiding, when applied on a successful game, destroy it as a dot.  Of course, on a game such as WoW, a dot take quite a while before been effective.  EQ succomb to that dot.

Raiding, by it definition, hurt and cripple grouping (raiding attendancy been mandatory and taking peoples away from grouping, leaving some players LFG and needy which will eventually quit the game, in turn some raiders will be left groupless when they have no raid going on so they will log off until the next raid).  In a healthy game, hurting grouping to get some peoples focused on a side aspect seems beneficial.  In the long run, it cripple the game to a point where even raiding collapse by lack of new members, as raiding leech and survive solely on the grouping system, once the grouping is dead, then so is raiding.

PUGs is what make a game healthy, any system that go against PUGs (raiding certainly is) is by definition hurting the game.

In order to be successfull in the long run, PUGs must be part of the endgame, not scorned upon by peoples involved in the endgame.

most eq raiding requires grouping in order to raid  not only that  eq has worked hard on shrinking the gap between raid gear and group gear..  but it is the players not the devs who embraced raiding. and it is the players who decide wether they want t groupor not

VSOH - Didn't live up to the hype or the monetary investment and the vanbois being crushed by their messiah was tragic.  I cried in real life...... really.

There are two obvious choices, SWG and Vanguard.

SWG, for  lost potential revenue. It is a license that had an incredibly strong fanbase already and only complete ineptitude ruined this MMOG. SWG should have easily been one of the most popular and profitable games created.

Vanguard, for actual loss. This MMOG cost 30 million dollars to produce and it is a complete failure. It hasn't even recouped it's initial investment.

What is the common thread for both of these historic failures? SOE

Horizons was a failure on so many levels.  Any game that ends up 'accidently' charging users should diaf.

Also, I think Dungeons and Dragons Online had SO MUCH potential.  The game should not have been so damn instanced.  Some of my favorite times playing real DD were out in the world.  They failed completely in my eyes.  The trial was enough for me to hate it.  No out of combat regen, no outskirts, forced grouping.  Sheesh.  Like EQ only worse.

Most do not call it a failure infact it's the highest rated game at the moment on this site. It is only a few that call it a failure mainly because it doesn't have world pvp with player looting. It's the biggest selling MMO out at the moment and as someone else has said it is probably the most successful MMO since WoW.

Although those are valid arguments, I don't like LOTRO because I am forced to play a good guy in a world of good guys.  Monster play is not enough for me.  I have always played the "evil" races, and I refuse to become a hobbit, human, elf, or hobbit.  Yuck.

BUT!  I do not consider the game a failure.  It is just not my cup o' tea.

SOE shouldnt be blamed for vanguards failures... they took it over after Brad had failed

The international version of PC / PS2 Phantasy Star Universe. Hacking there drove many people away. Really a great game, though, so I went to the JP servers with more people.  Or you could go xbox

I think that Vanguard is the biggest failure of them all, because it had the greatest expactations of all the MMO:s that you have listed.

The larger the expectations are, the bigger the failure will be if it doesn't live up to those expectations.

And yes, I was in beta 4 and bailed out during beta 5 because it was so unplayable due to the immense lag.
