Consoles are Doomed

ianubisiianubisi Member Posts: 4,201

And here is the proof.

An oft-touted strength of console games is their solid, bug-free state. The games had to be shipped with as few bugs as possible because it was impossible to update them aftermarket. PC game developers have been (justifiably) slammed for a long time for relying on the internet to deliver patches for a product that is seemingly rushed to market.

But that is all changing now. No doubt the link I've provided is not the first time this has happened, but it's the first time I've known about it. While I'm willing to believe there isn't a majority status yet for online console gamers, that will change before too long. And, of course, with the ability of such updates available to your gaming audience...how long will their resolve to run through massive (and expensive) QA cycles hold?

Not long, I suspect. And down will go one of the strongest arguments for why consoles are a "better" platform for gaming. Mind you, my post title is a bit dramatic...they're not doomed, of course...just doomed to needing patches like everyone else.

Kinda the wrong forum for this but I'll post my .02 before it's moved.

Consoles aren't doomed at all, in fact they'll only get more and more popular.

PC gaming is on the way out as it's becoming annexed by Microsoft and the Games For Windows platform. PC releases are buggy primarily because of drivers, inconsistencies and incompatibilities. Ultimately the strongest attributes of the PC gaming system -- the flexibility and customization -- are exactly what has hurt the development cycle for most PC games.

That's not to say console games won't wind up bugged. They'll be bugged, especially as demand for consoles drives demand for games up. The gaming "renaissance" is a good thing for everyone but it also means a lot more work for individual game studios. That's why rehashes of existing games have become common - it's easier to work with existing formulas and code engines.

Newer age console systems are actually developed with the developer in mind, and are becoming easier to code for than PCs... thus the Games For Windows initiative.

Give me a Console with Mouse and Keyboard and my PC will only be used for Excel and Word.

Why? Because playing games on a Console means everyone playing is using the exact same system.

All games will be made for that system, will run smoothly, and it would be a completely level playing field.

I am definitely a PC guy but geez this is the first time in 10 years that I am playing more console games then PC games.  I have 3 PC games on my computer.  The PC game market to me has become stagnant.  There seems to be a lack of creativity and a lot of copy catting going on.

I am looking forward to some new ones like Spore, but some out of the box thinkers need to shake up the PC market.

As an avid console and pc gamer i have to disagree with you here. Just because a game needs a patch doesnt bring down the whole console gaming market.  The ability for pc games to be updated by downloadable patches is a strongpoint for the platform, but essentially what console gamers want more and more these days is plug and play. When you go to your local video games store and buy a pc game, you have to check the required specifications section etc to ensure that you will be able to run it. This isnt a problem for console owners as if it says PS2 on the box it will run on a PS2. You dont have to worry anout graphics cards or Direct X or any of that. I can see console developers using patches to enhance gameplay but i dont think that they will deliberatly rush through a buggy game as many of the "plug and players" wouldnt bother with getting the patches anyway and its these people that make up a good proportion of the market. I dont know im rambling lol.

While it does bother me that more, and more console games seem to be shipping "unfinished" and later fixed with "optional add ons", or patches console games are just so much easier to pick up and play.

For a PC if I want to play the latest, and greatest I got to:

Make sure my PC can handle it.

    Install the game.

    Update my drivers.

Tweak all the settings so that the game looks playable to me.

For a console I just pop it in, and play.

Still I love playing PC games.  My consoles are just "distrations" from my main gaming rig.

i hope the best for all us gamers. i prefer PCs but console gaming is good too. MS is screwing us over though. i really dislike  "only for xbox" titles,  its good for xbox, but screws over developers, they have a limited customer base.

and ps3 and xbox360 are just computers, i wish we saw more ported games, that they would actually do a good job on. cost of porting a already created game has gotta' be cheap enough for it to be profitable.

    die. <3
