well coming from WoW
i realized GW was going to be different
but maybe the transition was too different for me too enjoy
GW gives me the feeling that im playing for no apparent goal
as to WoW i felt like i was achieving something
everyone looks the same in GW, when ur a PVP character armor customization is very low in terms of cosmetics
In WoW the armor customization is through the door.
u see alot of different looking ppl
which makes u feel like ur in a huge enviornment of players and unlimited possibilities
GW, feels like almost a burden to me now
i miss WoW, i admit.
im not trying to call GW a bad game
im just giving you my opinion when trying to come to this game from an MMORPG
Comments
Basically the road to the goal is just as important if not more than the goal itself.
Having fun doing something is the point with a game after all, isn't it?
As for customization, I've never had any PvP-only characters, and most of my toons have bits and pieces from different armour sets. I've yet to meet a look-alike

I don't like saying this but.. go play wow ==
btw. I'm not subre but such threads are pointless. and they are usually made by trolls.. what are we supposed to tell you.. no you're wrong.. gw is a wonderfull game and you should play it.. as if this would change your opinion... >.>

I have also yet to meet a lookalike in Guild Wars. How long have you been paying the game btw? Do you know what FoW armour and all that Jazz is? There's plenty of armour, and mixing and matching can make it so much cooler too.
in guildwars you try to get your guild to the top and play in tournaments and try to be the best. in factions you fight for your side and gain enough faction to gain control of cities. in nightfall you train heroes to fight and be the best with heroes. guildwars is more of a pvp game. wow sucks in pvp. all pvp in wow is a bunch of people runnin around swingin there weapons at each other and jumpin like maniacs. gw actually has stradegy and tactics and you pretty much have to do these things to win. not sayin that wow doesnt its just that most of the time people in wow dont use stradegy or tactics just randomly kill people for the hell of it. only time people use stradegy is if they are in the same guild or use form groups with teamspeak or somthin.
also in guildwars the time factor is alot shorter. you play months in wow just to achieve lvl 70 and more months to get those cool armor sets when you can do all this in guildwars in about a month or 2 depending on how much you play.
remember you are comparing a mmo to a corpg. similar genres but corpg focuses more on pvp while mmo focuses more on rp.

there are probibly more goals achievable in guild wars then there is in wow, play guild wars for a little longer then you will start to like it, dont just play for a week and judge it like that, just because your coming from wow you expect something similar and when you see its nothing a like then you get scared off
GW's goals:
Titles
Fame
$10,000 monthly tournament
or to most people...finish the current campaign
WoW's goals:
Get to level 70 and endless raid
that's it
WoW is the game that don't have a goal, or at least a reachable goal. While GW is a game that you can play and finish and get it over with.
We wanted to create a game where people can enjoy right from the start, not after hours grinding
WoW is only enjoyable after you grind to 70
This is coming from a view of a multi-world game player.
What the bloody hell were ya thinkin?! Yes theres a few games that have similar setups (Ohh.. say Silkroad and Last Chaos), but there are still a few noticable differences. But when you come up to GW, theres a bit of a giant slap of reality in the face. From what I have seen so far, is that this game is the only one to have a system set up like this. Plus... who cares if we all look alike? The biggest matter of the fact is.. who can kick someone else's ass with their build faster, or be the one who takes more damage longer out in the wilds.
I've played WoW as well, and yes there are quite noticable differences between the two. Graphics, PvP play, just to name a couple. No game is ever going to be exactly the same.... until you look at the ones you can download off the internet that seem to be made by new companies just to try appeasing the crowd of what they are already used to, with a different graphics display. Once you hit it that way, and you're used to games like that... please at least look at the game before buying it. Any of them. Do research! And also, don't just ask on the forums like these ones here on MMORPG. Go have a look at the forums on the official site for a game.
Also, as someone else has stated before, what is with you OPs posting one post, and never bothering to come back to see what we posted?
I've been seriously considering Guild Wars since it offers a nice change to the way MMO's are done, and also does away with the monthly fee.
He may have been trolling, but his trolling helped me with my decision to cancel my sub to WoW and give Guild Wars a shot.
To the OP:
I agree that PVP character armor is limited. But there some 20+ different armor styles you can buy in PVE, including some very prestigious "15K" armors. Considering you can also mix and match styles without penalty and add dyes for further customization (versus WOW that forces you to wear a complete set to get all bonuses), there are many ways to make your character stand out.
The biggest thing you may be grappling with is the quest for gear versus the quest for accomplishment. GW is all about finishing the campaign, then going on to earn titles for exploring the world, accomplishing quests in record time, or succeeding in PVP. The barrier to entry is low in terms of equipment, so in theory anyone can compete in PVP or see the elite end-game instances. WOW is all about getting the new gear, which in turn allows you to compete in PVP or explore new instances. I guess it depends if you are driven by material goods or by motivation to accomplish certain goals (I will earn a gladiator title, or I will explore the entire world and become master cartographer). IMHO WOW appeals more to the achiever types (even PVP is extremely achievement based) while GW also has plenty to offer explorers or competitors. Unfortunately, neither game really offers a great deal to socializers.
My only advice would be to finish the main campaign - it will at least give you a feeling of accomplishment even if you don't play GW again and allow you to truly explore what the game has to offer.

"Feeling you achieve something" is the main hook, sinker and line with MMORPG's. But the truth is that you never really succeed in obtaining anything but time-set-stepping stones to a neverending ladder.
While in normal games (single-player // online) you play to become better, with real skills. Nothing changes, people play for years with the same stuff as they always did, but their skills increase as they play. In MMORPG's it's a time run for better gear. Your skills, which really doesn't exist from a realistic perspective, stay the same.
If you're looking for that kinda game, then go with MMORPG's. But GW is not a MMORPG in my and many others (most even?!). It's a regular online flavoured game.

And I don't want to hear anything about "I don't believe in vampires" because *I* don't believe in vampires, but I believe in my own two eyes, and what *I* saw is ******* vampires! "
Well i play both WoW and GW....ive had my character since the first beta test done in that game..have had my levels wiped so many times i cant count them on both hands, then after all those beta tests GW launches and i have had nothing but fun since..im lvl 20 and loving every bit of it. Ive played WoW for almost 2 years and im still in my late lvl 30s with my main...i should be lvl 70 by now but i stopped playing for months on end due to boredom. GW has more to offer and is more of a test of skills then WoW ever could be...and less boring too.
Errr he's simply not enjoying the game. That's different.
Stupid people stick to "GW is teh suxx0rz! lvl 20 max wtf, not a MMO lolol!!11"-kind of gibbering.

I disagree: I came to GW from WoW and really, really liked it. I think the OP is just gripng for griping's sake, and tried out GW not so much because he wanted a change from WoW, but because he wanted more of the same. When I went to GW, it was because I wanted something different, and that's what I got. I personally think the look, style and game play of GW is superior to WoW, although WoW is a very tight and fun game to play, too.....I just wanted a change of pace, and GW offered it.

<=== played WOW 6 month , played GW 2+x years , waitting for warhammer online.
WOW good point is that it's the true RPG game where you can travel with friend(as long as they don't raid or farm) discover new land , try new armo and it require lots of play time .you require about 3h everyday tobe able to catch up with the world and not tobe left out. you can conisdering it like the old time MMORPG.
however GW is more like fun game when it focus more on PVP and instant travel, you till can do mission quest with friend but tehre is not adventure feel in GW. the good point from guild war is that it give you totaly different game exp from other MMORPG.you can quit and come back to play GW anytime without worry being left out . has lot of replay value ,it just take about 1-2h play everyday.
of course life time of an MMORPG used to 1-2 years so we should only compare them when they are at the highest score.
so it depend on YOUR FREE TIME and YOUR TASE, chose what is the best for yourself.
first of all ur saying "everyone looks the same in GW, when ur a PVP character armor customization is very low in terms of cosmetics" and i sort of agree with that. solution to that is creating a pve char and get some pve armor instead. and now to the question. as i see it ur saying they all look a like in GW what about WoW then where every1 is aiming for the same end game armor? dont they look the same then?
second question is: what was ur goal in WoW that u were aiming for? getting to lvl 60 and now 70 to do endless of raids? u know u can do that in GW too but then again the there is nothing like killing a end game boss which will ages but GW is more of a pvp game then a pve. plus that pvp is 100 times better in GW. there is nothing like uber armor that will give u or the enemy an advantage like in WoW...

Also why was it called "Guild" wars, you dont need a guild for anything. I found the guilds i was invited into were just another "chat" channel.
In the end I think 100% instancing is what ruined it for me. It just killed the "social" aspect and immersion.
