Precisely Sramota, I played the pre-TBC version of WoW for two years, then when TBC itself came out I decided I had enough because it was just more of the same thing, I think a lot of people here are confusing fun with addiction, it's really quite sad....

Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.

Video clip of the kid and his World of Warcraft addiction

I can imagine playing EQ for 16 hours a day, but WoW is a lot more difficult to picture.  In EQ finding a group itself took hour(s), and then you have to get to a spot, clear the spawn, and continue the cycle non-stop or risk respawns.  Getting all of that accomplished took another hour, and then exp started to eek in.  WoW on the other hand...no.

He probably a guild leader leading his guild through a WoW raid. Really, any group of 40 5 years old and below can beat WoW raids way to easy. But its an easy mode game, hard to see why people above age 8 get addicted to something that requires the attention span of a gold fish. LOL.

Stop trying to sound insulting, because you're not funny. Take a nap, fool. Oh and that stupid European boy that needs a shower - Your point? First off, I played Doom at age 6 or 7. And plus, I have a father, unlike the kid in the OP's. Strict father, abusive mother, snitchy sister - at age 19 I'm desensitized to everything, I'm ruthless as all living hell, I'm perfectly stable but - I only care about two things - myself and money. Not even sex is worth a penny to me. No friends, no family, no fear, no pain, no regrets. Nothing but money and living my life is LUXURY while NOT having to bust my ass or take reponsibility for other peoples stupidity. Survival of the fittest - I Am A God Among Men.

If I ever DO have kids or if ever asked advice on how kids can be as awesome as me, hell, at age 2 - don't put them up against crappy RTS games. Put them alone in the dark playing games like Stalker : Shadows of Chernobyl, F.E.A.R, Doom 3, Counter-Strike, Soldier of Fortune II -  hell load up some old-age Ogrish videos if you want! Desensitize them with fear, terror, and most importantly - old fashioned blood and guts. Make them TOUGH and RUTHLESS so that they realize one thing is important - themselves. Otherwise, they'll look like shit and feel like shit to the point where they punch holes in their walls just to feel tough, then not only does the parent have to pay for it, they have to pay their kids WoW subscription fee....

For Example of my Uber CA-RAZY attitude : Remember the chainsaw in Doom 2 Map 1? Yeah.... 4th grade a teacher mouthed off about my father's height. I grabbed that motherf'er and said, "I'll run you right through you steaming pile of sh*" and went on from there. Teacher lasted maybe three months because he was humiliated and utterly decimated by my overbearing and merciless rage. That's not all though - that teacher had a bad history, and even worse, well, think about it... So yeah - if you love your kids, toughen them up. Make it so that when your old and ailing they won't have a problem ending your misery.

I actually think this forum HAS gotten stupid, look to my quote in all seriousness though, game haters, just give it up, oh and this may sound really cliche but get a life? I honestly think that people like you are nothing more than pathetic attention seekers who have nothing better to do since it's clear that you cannot bring up any scientifically proven evidence that gamers are addicted to games, I just simply play them because it's part of my future career and I also have nothing better to do. Prove me wrong with hard line undeniable evidence and I'll respect it, a lot of people studying this are 'suspecting' that games are causing addiction and the news media are actually asking whether it does cause addiction or not. This is one of those subjects that is in theory right at the moment, there has been no undeniable proof that such games cause behavioral or addiction problems simply because of the many factors that could also be conflicting with theories like this, stick your 'opinions presented as facts' some place else please we come here to talk about MMORPG's and the Games Industry, not to be hassled by the likes of you for playing them.

I think the fact that you have projected a personal attack on yourself says a lot. I have not seen anything in this thread directed at you as an individual. Sounds like you may be spending too much time in video game land.

I am interested in your justification of playing video games as part of your career path though. There really is no need to justify a simple pleasure, but since you made it an issue of defense, pray tell what career are you pursuing and what real steps have you taken to accomplish this goal other than playing video games.

I hope you didn't fall for one of those stupid advertisements on TV about enrolling in some no name school and becoming a video game designer by sitting around playing video games?

This thread should be locked, the OP was just begging to see how many flames he'd get for posting this -_-

As for those of you who are against games, come up with some better bloody arguments instead of trying to use science speak and downright insults to try and make an argument.
Don't take this the wrong way as im in no way trying to incite a flame war, and I don't have all the information. However you basically said in your post that without being able to take your anger out in a game, you could end up out in the street punching people or in a gang. This is a perfect example of WHY there are haters of the Video game industry.

Far too often games are an outlet for emotions, or actions people want to ignore in the real world, and this is where the talk of the addiction comes from. If someone gets angry and then uses a game for an outlet, it does become a problem. Lets say I use WoW as an outlet for my anger whenever im annoyed. Then lets assume that for some reason I am unable to access WoW for a few days, and during that period somebody really annoys me, all of a sudden Ive got a lot of anger and have no idea how to deal with it. The result is lashing out at people, and showing a lack of control. At this point someone will realise its because i'm unable to play WoW, and the conclusion is that because im not playing WoW, im angry. Then they see that not playing WoW has had a detrimental effect on my actions and emotions and draw the conclusion that im addicted. The thing is, they are right as well, because addiction is a psychological need, and I need WoW to channel my anger.

Games can provide an outlet and intake for all kinds of emotions and psychological needs. Things like happiness, a sense of achviement, enjoyment, fun. Then the social interaction that people get from being able to make so many friends and not be judged on their real life status. As always though the issues that go with these arise when people begin to rely on a game as an outlet. People will also be more susceptible to these depending on their current emotional state out of the game.

If you rely on a guildmate as a person to talk to because your parents got divorced, and they quit the game for some reason, then you probably wont know what to do.

If playing an MMO is the only thing that makes you happy and your computer breaks, your going to be really miserable.

Addiction doesn't mean its all you think about, or it something you do too often. It means you rely on something to provide you with soemthing else.

The 2 year old kid playing computer games isn't going to fail at life just because he started playing games age 2. The issue will only come about if he doesn't have any social interaction or the game becomes his only form of entertainment and interaction because his parents don't provide him with any.

Edit: I entirely forgot the final point of my post lol.

Games are not addictive in themselves by any nature, I never remeber reading that some guy played Super Mario 20 hours a day, or anything like that. Way back before MMO's gained in popularity and most people stuck to console's there were very few comments made about people being addicted. The social aspects that came in with MMORPG's is what change this, because things you used to have to convey to people in real life, can now be done with some guy hundreds of miles away and entirely anonymously. Why tell your best friend a secret in real life, when you can tell some random guy AND play a game at the real time.

Let me guess, is it that college where the two guys are sitting in front of a monitor playing video games talking about moving a certain sound effect to a different level of the game and boasting about how great it is to get paid to play video games as designers?

OT real quick: That comercial sucked and is very very inaccurate on the game design process, I don't know why they just don't show you people in class or something REAL.

On Topic: I agree with everyone that say's his mom should take away his account, access, etc. If he has no job, who pays for it? Hmm... oh his parents! I would be like that kid, but it seems like no game can hold my for 16 hours straight so I can never be like that, plus I want to have a great future.

For the people that are adicted to the internet and games, sell your account that's the best way to stop. I couldn't bring my self to delete my mage so I sold it to a friend for $100, no he wasn't gimpie-long stalking either. Full T2 + AQ/Naxx gear (pre-BC also). I sold it to stop, not to profit. Imo WoW is a little too easy to get into and play, and I think that is a fair sized factor on the easy to become adicted to it.

Bit sad really, just goes to show how ignorant some people really are of the Games Industry and how it works and how arrogant enough some people are to believe that they're always right regardless of whether they've been proven wrong or not.

    Here's a link usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index

Now go ahead and download the personal edition of maya, come back and tell me again that people looking to do Games Design have it easy, if you do then I no longer respect your opinion.

As for the on topic stuff, I think it really is just a matter of parents trying to exercise some boundaries for their kids, it's really their own fault for letting them play the games in the first place if they think it's addictive.

But he is right you know technology is becoming an addiction not just in games but in general, technology does add to the problem rather they have addicted personalitys or not.
  • AngelboundAngelbound Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,437
So let me get this straight playing unhealty hurting yourself and becoming angry over a video game is a good thing? Entertainment is not suppose to be your life and you should never let it take over your life when games become serious its no longer a game rather you admit that or not, yes it is his choice but he is ruining his health, personality, and his future.

If you ask me, the video is fake and is just made to attract viewers, because World of Warcraft addiction is the a hot topic these days. Why do I think its fake?

    Look at the video.

The boy explains there are people playing from all over the world. As the program is clearly british, I'm going to assume the boy plays on the European servers. the guy asks if he has friends from all of those places, and he says yes Why would he have friends from NA? NA have their own servers, the chance you find an american on an european server is VERY small. Now I'm willing to believe NA, but China? Come now. the servers are seperated.

Moving on, Notice he says "Now I'm going to kill you all" in his microphone, which is probably linked to the teamspeak/ventrilo guild channel. Alliance player killing other alliance players? Thats a new one.

Then there is one more thing. Notice at one point he says "Aww, you took my kill!" in his microphone. the thing is, he is in a RAID DUNGEON! ever heard someone say "you took my kill in a raid dungeon?" I sure don't.

There are other things in the video that don't make sense. notice how his mom says he plays 16 hours on average, but the boy himself says that the longest he has ever played is 12 hours. According to the video, the kid has a bit of anger problem since he started playing the game. His mom is in tears. are you a damn parent or what!? cut of his internet. geez.

Seperated = Yes. But NA realms is where most people joined due to the massive population. Just like other MMO, alot prefer NA servers than their own localized one.

I once play AV BG in my alliance character while having the hordes sharing the same vent as me. So to my experience that isnt anything rare. Unless otherwise.

Are you a parent yourself? Children tell lies more than parents. And i do admit that i am once a WoW addict and was asked the same question. I lied that i play 10 hours per day but actually it is 18 hours per day. Lies can make wonders but parents is always the best lie dectector.

You lost track of time in any MMO you play. Never believe a gamer's statement. Believe the ones that is beside the gamer.

All canceled. Waiting on Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning.

I started playing games when was 2. That's how my mom got me to stfu. So I love video games. I play from the time I get home(4:36)- the time I have to go to sleep(10:00). So that's 6 hours a day. On the weekends I play from the time I get up(about 8:00)- the time I go to sleep(about 12:30). Of course I still go to sleep, but only about 8 hours. Sometimes I go back to sleep, but not very often....... And also my friend and me play WoW all day long.I belive its the best MMO out there. And I really can't wait till the next expansion pack comes out(Dragonh Rising)!!!!!

    Yay WoW!!!!!!
