How much has changed in EQ2 and is it worth going back ?

GrozfoxGrozfox Member Posts: 46

ok well here i am lol I had tried EQ2 in the past and am a long time fam simply because my first MMORPG was EQOA for the PS2. Its what sparked my interest because before hand I had just not even conciderd it. Now I find myself looking for my old game but i may just go sheel out the bones for this new box which has everything I guess. I have been away from the game for along time and was wondering how much has it changed. I only quit because it got hecktic with the heavy lag( and when i say heavy I mean so bad that it was like watching a slide show to where ya just couldnt do a dam thing at all). My connection has inproved and my PC isnt super strong but i do miss the good old EQ feel. Been playing WoW and omg how I got burnt out, while i did like WoW for the few good factors it had it just never kept my attention long enuff for me to enjoy it. I'm sort of wating on WAR because I've been hearing some good things here and there.

The last time I was in EQ2 the comunity was so drab noone was friendly on the server I was on and noone helped me out. Not that I am a dependant its just always more fun when you can get in a good grp of people and have fun. To make me officially decide o go back and stay back it would require a few things.

1. A server with a awsome friendly fun comunity(a.k.a. No bs comunity like the one in WoW where everyone just makes you feel like crap).

2.Less lag for god sake I cant enjoy the game if I cant even move two feet from a door.

3. possibly less stupidity(altho I have come to realize you cant fully escape the retarted Chuick Norris crap).

4. finnaly a more involved comunity (such as more ppl actually doing more than running in circles, mabie set up shop and be involved with other players more thna just for questing purposes).

I don't know when you stopped playing but the game has changed significantly since release, hell, it's changed significantly since KoS (Kingdom of Sky, the xpac before the latest), for the BETTER. EoF (Echoes of Faydwer, the last xpac) really made a huge impact on the direction of the game and I have really been enjoying it since I came back.

I'm not going to go into details here on what's changed and how, b/c it would take too long, but suffice it to say that EQ2 is a MUCH better game then what it was at release or after the first two expansions. Lets just say that they've really listened to what the community was asking for and w/ EoF and beyond they have taken a new approach to the game. They are making  the Norrath of EQ2 more closely resemble the Norrath of the past, albeit hugely changed by the devastation that took place in the last 500 years.

Really, all I can say is that if you left EQ2 at a point before EoF and are curious about how EQ2 has changed and what's going on now...do yourself a favor and renew your sub and jump in. I think you will be VERY pleasantly surprised w/ just how far the game has come.

Teddyboy has it right on the dot. The game is vastly superior to most other MMO's and to it's former, launch-time state.

After playing EQ2 and now Vanguard, I never realized how "alive" EQ2 feels and it has me wanting to come back lately :P The game also just has so much lore and content it's hard to not get caught up in it.

Oh yea, Antonia Bayle (RP) has a very nice and thriving community if you were wondering.

Thanks you for that quick and helpfull response I hope to get more. To answer you of when i stoped playing lol it was a LONG time ago I stoped just after the Kingdom of Sky xpac and I didnt even get tht one so I plaied the basic game itself no xpacs lol I have been to the site reading up on the newest xpac and see that theres yet another one coming this year with a new race and such which does hevily apeal to me. I like when a game produces xpacs with new races and such to add to great content. It keeps things fresh for me which is what keeps me going. I see that it has changed emensely however was wondering I have seen the box for the game with all the xpacs included but wonder if I get it would I be required to also get the APs aswell. either way I have become even more interested now and your replay has made me look into it more.

my only hope is that I wont go thru the horrid bugs that laged the game up in the past ...please tell me they have fixed that stuff lol I certainly hope so. I'll try to make a desicion this week and let everyone know. but I'm leaning twords becomeing part of the EQ2 comunity again.

Also on a side note does anyone know cause I cant really tell from the site what are the pros and cons of the Fae and what classes best suit them anyhow?

Good to know I am fond of RP I have always just had trouble finding a steady comunity of RP. WoW only like 6% every actually did RP lol . altho by biggest concern on that note is finding a place to fit in lol finding a good guild is always tuff for me, but just haveing good friends works aswell.

Adventure packs are purely optional. They are there at your dispense/cash..

Bugs? Hardly. The game HAS been out for 2 1/2 years...if that says anything. Maybe a few graphical glitches here and there, but game breaking? Nah.

Races/class restrictions are a thing of the past. After 20 levels or so, you can get gear to even out the weak spots. So yes, a hulking, loud ogre can indeed be a succesfull scout. Play what you like.

For a bit further reference, AB is the second biggest server there is, so welcome over,
everyone's nice and friendly and they'll even call you names if you ask them nicely.
It feels odd when they don't scream noob and stuff, but you'll get used to it ;)

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
    It all sucked.

I have the same question kinda....

any chance that you guys could quickly list some of the main changes since release?  My wife and I played from release until WoW came out and have been playing that ever since.   One of the biggest reasons we left was because of the huge Brick wall that we hit leveling wise at lvl 20.  My wife and I almost exclusively duo'ed.   after lvl 20 it was almost impossible to do so..has this changed?

I loved the fact that you could start a dark elf , and change from freeport to qeynos alliance...loved my dark elf monk...is that still possible?  i think i heard somewhere that that went away.

wow thanks for the warm welcome haha sounds like I'll enjoy that server. As for the bugs thing what I meant was is way back I had had moments when I'd end up running into a spot where I'd get stuck in spot then it would lag me and crash my client which I think was just minor stuff but it was just in tiny spots. It may have just been a fluke tho.

Ok, first, i know this is a bit off topic and im sorry about that. Good now with that taken care of. xcryonicx you said you have played vanguard. I was wondering about the game. is it good? the community, rp, graphics, (laggy servers?), crowded, everything you can think off answering.

I am thinking of buying it and i want to know if it has that feeling that really makes you feel a part of the world.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I'm playing WoW now and I have to say that my favorite aspect of WoW are the instances. They give  the few friends I like to play with and I a finite thing to do without being bothered by lvl70s farming resources or having to camp Bloodtalon for 6 hours...ugh...

I remember the adventure packs introducing instances, my question is are there more today and do they span all levels?

Also, the other issue I had when I left was SOE's decision to remove weapon damage from skill/talent. Which in essence rendered my epic imbued feesteel dagger as usefull as a diner spoon. I wonder if epic weapons DMG is still only applied in auto-attack?

WoW addressed this by making weapon speed influence the talent/skill frequency of use.

If anyone could comment on this I would appreciate it, will make my decision much easier ;).

    Thanks

    Dwyn

Forgot to say, I play on the Lucan D'lere (RP) Server, and it has a really great, mature and active community. If you're looking for a mature server w/ a healthy population, I suggest giving it a shot.

To answer some of the questions asked along the way in the thread.....

There have been alot of changes, some of the larger ones include:

They've the game much more soloable, while still having tons of group and raid content

Yes, there is at least one, usually more, large dungeons for all lvl ranges in addition to a bunch of side-quest/group instances along the way that groups can tackle in varying amounts of time.

An almost obscene amount of quests, and on top of traditional quests there are no Heroic quests, not to mention all the collection quests. Having played both WoW and EQ2 for large chunks of time, I can easily say that EQ2 has WAAAAY more quests then WoW. Another neat thing, at least IMO, in the next xpac they are introducing Epic Weapon quest lines, kind of similar to what they had in EQ and EQoA...you know, a huge, epic questline that takes you all over the world to see all the sights and at the end you are rewarded w/ an amazing, obscenely powerful, very cool weapon unique to your class. And yes they will have one for each "sub-class", at least that's the rumor, so for example Troubadors and Bards w/ have different ones, they will probably be similar in some way, but they will be different.

They have really changed the direction of the game in terms of the storyline. In the first year or so, and the first 2 xpacs and adventure packs (which they said they won't be making any more APs for awhile) were focused more on new factions, places and lore that didn't really exist in EQ or EQoA. But now they are taking us to more familair places, i.e. Faydwer, and Kunark in the next xpac , w/ more familair faces.

One last thing that has REALLY improved since launch has been they have really tweaked and optomized the game. No more hugely awful server-side lag in large zones!!!!

The game is a blast.   Competition for resources is not a huge issue on Guk server.  Come back and give it a shot -- after the initial shock at how much everything has changed you'll find yourself loving it!

oh thank you teddyboy you answerd one of my major questions the server-side lag is gone thats what I like to hear. and on that note I'll be definately comeing back to my MMORPG roots. (i.e. EQoA was my first and its what got me hooked and I've been a EQ lover ever since) and also I've been told two really good sounding servers. now its more of a quest for me to choose which one can offer me a better play. I love RP comunities especially those who are mature and active aswell as dedicated to playing thier parts and haveing fun with it. Its been years literally since I have experienced a good RP server. (not since EQoA lol).

also I asked before but  what in the opinion of everyone are the pros and cons of the new playable race the Fae? Just wondering because I am interested in finding out all I can on this new stuff so i know what to expect and all.

  • edmonaledmonal Member Posts: 188
The betrayal quests have been expanded to include all levels, as opposed to only allowed up to level 18?. As for the fae; the glide feature is fun, but other than that I didn't feel it added or subtracted from my experience playing. I do recommend starting in the fae area, or wait till Neriak comes out (most likely next week) for evil characters. They re-tuned the Trial of the Isle starting area, and they are better, but I still think the new starter area in EoF is a very much superior experience. It's really heartening to see the renewed interest in this game, it is a lot of fun. The overall experience from 1-59 is very much geared to solo/duo, yet there is still a ton of instances for full groups. The raiding realistically starts in the 55 + level range with the courts raids in Desert of Flames, but I've never felt that I had to raid to get gear to play the other aspects of the game.

The ability to start getting AAs at level 10 have really enhanced the game for me. The ability to customize my character from the get go is great (I appreciated that about WoW) and I find myself turning off my combat xp so I don't out-level my current quests. I have a lvl 17 bruiser with 9 AAs and I think that's great.

The mentoring aspect is also great in this game; if you have a lower level friend you can reduce your level to theirs. It's somewhat overpowered at times, but it's a nice option.

Anyways welcome back to those who played and left, and welcome to all the new players coming to this game.

well i dont know about the next xpac comeing out next week from what has been said it wont be here till fall so there will still be a bit of a gap. I Decided to return to let everyone know as I had said i would in an erlier post. I should recive the game tomorrow so I'll be there. however I still havent chosen a server yet lol. I like the Rp server sugjestions so far but i may need a bit more conviceing for my final choice lol.

The xpac isn't coming out, but there is a live update due and with it they're adding the city of Neriak with a new 1-20 area for the evil characters. It's going to be the counter part to the fae starting area.

As for server choices, AB is the most populated atm, but I would go to the eq2 site and check the server forums to get  feel for them. I play on Najena, it's more international than most with a strong Aussie contingent.
  • GrozfoxGrozfox Member Posts: 46
well aslong as the comunity is good and ppl take RP sierious I'm in so.
  • edmonaledmonal Member Posts: 188
There are guilds that take RP seriously on AB and on Lucan D'Lere. Not all players do, but I'm sure you can find a group of people who want to RP in the game.

DAMN, just from reading this post I am almost ready to go back and try EQII again. Hell last time I played it there wasnt even talk of an expansion yet. From what I been reading here this would be a whole new game to me compared to when I last played. I may just have to give this game another try.

Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there,
80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters.
Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior,
and he will bring the others home.
