I thouht that the movies and books were boring enought, but how do you creat an MMO out of a story with a defineant end? what amazing hoo ha can you change?
You obviously made this just to get flames but I'll answer it sincerely. Basically, the setting of the game is before the books. This gives them a lot (not unlimited) of freedom to do what they want. It also allows them to show the player with something they havn't seen before since the movies and books focus on what happens AFTER the game.
No, it takes place just before the books and movies. A bit after 'The Hobbit'
As the black orb in the first movie/book? That was about when the movies were considered to start, the game takes place when the darkness started to spread, before the books/movies, just after the hobbit.
And yes, you obviously started this to get a flame. There is no need for idiotic post coming from you bratty twelve year olds, they are boring, and pointless. A waste of our time, and yours.
no the game takes place at the same time as the books/film
true, as far as timeline goes, the heroes of the books/movies have just gathered at Rivendell. And while they have their own story to follow, Middle earth is a big place with many stories to tell, not just the one so-often told....

The curent timeline is about half way through Fellowship of the Ring. If you plot out the story with the regions of the world that will almost certainly be the focus of the future paid expansions, I'd guess it will take four (maybe five) years to reach the final chapter of Return of the King.
The story doesn't need to end there though. Even when Sauron is defeated, there will still be plenty of evil left in the world, the Orcs, Goblins and other baddies didn't just melt into the ground with the death of Sauron.
The devs also have the rights to all the territories of Middle Earth, including those mentioned in LotR, but not directly part of the story of the Fellowship. Lands to the North, South and the East...and beyond...
well I'm getting two different answers here, is it in or before the books and arnt the hobbit and the LOTR triology prety far apart? (Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not exactly a LOTR expert here) And could someone clear up the confusion, and if it is in the books then how much fluxiablaty is there when messing around I mean there is like a solid story to follow.
And I didn't just make this fourm to flame, I was just wondering, you shouldn't just to conclusions that quickly.
ok stop arguing!!! this is taken directly from Wikipedia about the LOTRO timeline....
"The Lord of the Rings Online is set during The Fellowship of the Ring after Frodo and company leave The Shire. Players are able to meet the characters from Tolkien's story, including some of the Fellowship. There are four playable races with seven different classes.
In the initial release, only the following regions of Middle Earth are playable: Eriador including Blue Mountains, the Shire (Old Forest included), South Downs (located east of the Old Forest and south of Bree), Breeland, North Downs (Fornost included in this area), Trollshaws (the forests surrounding Rivendell) and Angmar. The player is even able to travel into the ghostly Barrow Downs, an old set of hills inhabited by the spirits of dead soldiers. Expansion packs will follow the journey of the Ringbearer: Rhovanion, Rohan, Gondor, and Mordor"

Turbine has said the game is set in the time that frodo leaves the shire. As far as flexability goes. They are limited in the fact they can't change the actual story from the books. But they are allowed to expand upon the other aspects of middle earth that is breifly mentioned but not gone into great detail by tolkien.
As in angmar. Tolkien hints there is a threat of some kind from that area of middle earth. But he does not go into great detail about it. So turbine is able to come along and say this is what was happening there. The epic book quests will tell the main story of the fellowship of the ring. That they won't and can't change.
Our main focus is not the story tolkien told in the books. In alot of ways that is a backdrop for us. A story that unfolds as we do the epic quests at the pace that we feel like doing them. Now the story of angmar and the threat from it is a story that turbine will reveal to us. This is our main focus. We as the players are there to tell this story and to prevent angmar from over running the area of eriador.
Well, while wikipedia is not a definitive resource, they are right. The game developers have stated that the time setting is during the Lord of the Rings book series.
To the OP, what game do you play (or know of) where you can change the story of the game? The only game I can think of that gives that kind of control is EVE, but I don't play it, and I could also argue that EVE doesn't have much of a story anyways.

ok to back up my Wikipedia findings this is DIRECTLY from the LOTRO site
"When does the game take place? LOTRO is set in the Third Age, during the War of the Ring. The game begins approximately after Frodo leaves the Shire with the One Ring. The launch product will essentially cover the time and many locations of the first book, The Fellowship of the Ring."
to answer the OP, while the Fellowship of the Ring adventures are surely topical enough, there are many many things going on at the same time that Tolkien just pass by. For example, Rivendell is under almost constant attack by Moria goblins and orcs, Elrond wife is kidnapped by them and his two sons, Elladan and Elrohir, that you met in the game too, get busy with a researchto save her.
That is just one adventure that has nothing to do with the fellowship of the ring but happens at roughly the same time. Keep in mind that the Forces of Sauron are everywhere and they all crawled out of their holes when the war started. So everywhere, the free people have to fight for their freedom and it is only thanks to their heroic effort that there was actually something left when the war was over.

Yeah, like I said before why would I go out to find something out when there are a bunch of people willing to tell me exactly what is going on, it just simplifies my life a little bit more.
Thanks people who wern't being assholes and just telling me when the game took place and how it could be fun, and the in game screen/interface does it seem like the game is a rip off of WoW, becuase I hate WoW, yeah I could go look at the screens, but that would just take up more of my life.
