I hope SOE isnt so burnt by the NGE backlash that they are unwilling to make the chnages that NEED to be made to Vangaurd.
Just my thought. He said, we dont make big changes. Did he say that because thats what a lot of remaining players wanted to hear? Sure, some things are good as they are, but many others would need a big rework. The really interesting news are yet to come: what WILL the change?

That little rat doesn't have the guts. If you've been following the rumor train...apparantly the weasel hasn't even been involved at Sigil since before release.
Which would explain the obvious lack of leadership at Sigil.
JS: The game is already on Station Access, and since January, many of the bugs and issues in the game have been addressed, and the rest will be as well. Vanguard is an SOE product and we're going to make sure it gets taken care of. As for the state of the release, well, Sigil only had a certain level of funding, and we contributed as well. But the game is in good shape now. We sold 200,000 copies...I'm not sure many people realize that. It's actually a very healthy game.
So.. only 200k. You know he rounded up too. Finally the "truth" comes out.
200k is "very healthy". They do have low standards.
200k is healthy for an MMO, it's also about the average when you talk about US subs.
That is also box sales, and not subs, but you knew that already.
Seems to read a lot like a bunch of SWG mourners are running around wetting themselves with glee around here.
SoE buying out is very nice. A company with money, finally.
The only thing that really suprises me is that they bought out Sigil, not just the game.
I commend any independant developers that set out to make something big. Mcquaid wasn't able to do it, but he gave it a go. This would have been a huge undertaking for even an established company. All things aside, the independant company was able to get the game on shelves. Good job Sigil.
200k box sales and who knows how many actual subscriptions might be decent for most MMO's, but not one that spent more than 30 million dollars to produce. They're going to need a lot more than that to break even, let alone make a profit.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
2. We do not plan on making any major changes to Vanguard. Any changes are going to come from the team itself. We aren't mandating any big changes to the game. We've learned a thing or two with our experiences with the NGE and don't plan on repeating mistakes from the past and not listening to the players.

====================================
There is much I would love to unload about right now, but seeing as I am feeling pretty emotional while trying to respect the wishes of remaining Vanguard management, I will refrain.
I knew this was coming months ago, as did most others, so I made arrangements prior to the whole unfolding of events today. Sony was kind enough to invite me and a few others to form a small team and to start prototyping a 'new' project. While we've done some 'secret' preliminary work, we begin in earnest tomorrow after we officially sign on with SOE. Don't bother asking about details, because you won't get any.
I became increasingly disenfranchised with the situation since the forced premature launch, which then culminated several weeks back when I decided I could not, in good conscience, continue serving the Sigil management staff in my over-extended capacity and stepped down. I would have walked away completely if this recent opportunity had not presented itself when it did.
I did the best I could with the time and resources I had at my disposal, but in the end it simply wasn't enough to bring the game up to the standards we all had hoped for in the time we had remaining. I apologize for any disappointments players have experienced. During the final year, I was pulling 80-100 hour weeks, and I was not at all alone in the building. I wish things could have been different.
While I was fortunate to stay employed, there were near 50 people today who were not, and it was painful watching the procession of stunned coworkers packing their belongings into little cardboard boxes with blank looks on their faces. I've never had to endure something like this, and I hope to never have to do it again. I know it is easy to point fingers at 'why' things ended up this way, but the vast, vast majority of the folks losing their jobs today had very little control on how events unfolded and many were skilled and creative people who simply wanted to make a great game.
The Vanguard team, obviously now much smaller, will go back to improving and fixing the game tomorrow. Myself and four others will be moving to a new location and beginning anew. The others will begin the process of trying to find a new place to work.
I promised not to be publically scornful, but I will say this: I hope those truly responsible for the deep rooted failings of the company lay in bed tonight and relive the events that transpired today in their heads, over and over. For not ONE of you is without your job come tomorrow morning.

Hello Everyone, Today I would like to formally announce that SOE has acquired the assets of Sigil Games Online, including Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. LINK
I TOLD YOU SO, SOE owns the whole thing, Vanbois that dismissed my warning burn in hell! Next SOE makes Vanguard a "raider only" club and starts pushing out expansions at the rate of two a year! You get to beta (more) every one of them and no bugs ever get fixed so they can push out another expansion. You raid or your gear/spells are hopelessly out of date and you are stuck alone in 3 expansion old content that is empty of other people.
I was just as disappointed and any rational as well as objective person saw this coming. I admire those who tried to fight this up hill battle and internal strife, as the game reflected this disconnect that appeared to be happening inside the Sigil house. I can honestly say I do share in the disappointment as an old school EQ player I though for sure that Brad, the master mind and brilliant architect of (EQ) Verant would create yet another ingenious, compelling, substantive and enthralling game.
The only thing I can say is, why didn't Brad stick to his game plan and why did he go with the demographics? As a gaming community we know how the Fair Weather MMO'ers are, why cater to these death by a million cut malcontents who's soul purpose is to be bottle fed with instant gratification and instantly coddled the moment they feel inconvenienced?
The Old Timers Guild Laid back, not so serious, no drama. All about the fun!

I am not so sure that he had a game plan...
And as far as "going with the demographics" - well the problem that he did NOT go with them. Instead of trying to cater to a specific area of the mmo market, he tried to use the shotgun approach and stuck in parts that he thought would please everyone. But none of it fit.
Brad - especially with his 8 month total abandonment of even going to the office - is hardly the god of games. The old phrase "feet of clay" comes to mind.

Simply because a few old school players are not paying a 30 million dollar bill.

Pretty much the expected announcement, although I had expected far less of the Sigil team to be kept on. I can't understand why McQuaid is being kept on in any capacity, unless it is due directly to his relationship with Smedley or a prior conditional agreement when Sigil went to SOE. The one thing I found honestly bizarre in this announcement was this little snippet:
2. We do not plan on making any major changes to Vanguard. Any changes are going to come from the team itself. We aren't mandating any big changes to the game. We've learned a thing or two with our experiences with the NGE and don't plan on repeating mistakes from the past and not listening to the players.
While it's great that they have a desire not to repeat a negative experience like the one they encountered with the SWG NGE, you have to ask yourself; if they have truly learned from their NGE experiences, why is the NGE still implemented and there are no "classic" SWG servers being offered? In my experience, if I've made a mistake I take action to rectify it, rather than continue the same course of action regardless of the consequences.
I am certainly not a SWG NGE refugee; I didn't even pick up SWG until long after the NGE had been implemented. I simply cannot understand the thought process that allows someone to state "we made a mistake" while simultaneously failing to correct the mistake.
That is just strange.
The NGE is mostly gone already. The only forced part of the NGE left is the consolidated professions. The orginal NGE targeting is still available but it's optional now, you can revert your settings and have it play pretty much like it used to.
Each recent Chapter has been adding new complexities to the game, such as Chapter 6 with the Storyteller system and Beast Master (which is a more indepth version of Creature Handler and Bio-engineer).
So yes, they have gone forward and have worked to rectify the "NGE mistake"
But $OE is only the PUBLISHER you noobs. Go look up "publisher" in the diktshunary and you'll see. Brad and sigil aree still in charge of the game and sony won't do nuthin to it.

It seems to me that SOE buying Vanguard today proves they did not own it back when you made those statements. But don’t let logic get in the way of a good rant.
