I feel sorry for those who got the short end of the stick. Nothing to be happy about. Guilt and fault from either side of the fence isn't what  this is about. To me it is about existences left on the edge or maybe even destroyed for the developers involved (not Brad, sorry). And the scam of players for real money for a "vision" which never delivered. That's just the gist of it and it is sad in my opinion.

Personally, I am happy as can be that Sigil got Fed royally because they Fed their community in selling a POS that was barely ready for public BETA let alone retail release.  Is it a shame that individuals inside Sigil will suffer, sure - but nothing is better justice than a company that screws its customers shipping shoddy products taking it on the chin.

I think the fact SoE took over is a good thing, aside ofcourse that Vanguard will live on. Yes, NGE was a horrible mistake, but I don't have any big complaints about Everquest 2 or The Matrix Online, which are the games I played mostly.

Unfortunately most here are dramaqueens that'll only look at SWG in thinking what will happen, instead of EQ2 which was more recent. Looking at the bad thing they did instead of the good thing they did. There are a few reasonable people, a few of them posted above me, but still most are not,

I personally think it will be very good for Vanguards future that SOE bought the game.

Hopefully they will do the same thing to Vanguard that they did to EQ2.  Meaning, take a shaky game at launch, and make it into a darn fine game.

Funny enough, most also forget EQ2 had its own "CU", going that far to even redefine whole classes. Initially the outcome from the healer imbalance intended fix, which they made a full blown mechanic re-design out of. *shrug*

Vanguard is an unfinished house that's been under construction, reconstructed, then re-reconstructed only to be back under reconstruction. SOE will have to remodel, redesign and breath new life into this train wreck, which ironically means it will be an EQish/EQ2ish hybrid. EQ is breathing its last breaths, EQII had to be essentially revamped somewhat to allow for a little more flexibility of play. Vanguard needs a total overhaul. To me Vanguard was a exercise in futility and a bottomless money pit, a true modern day myth of Sisyphus.

For me it's cautious optimisim, yet still with a great deal of apprehension. I've been burned twice by SoE, and I don't care for there to be a third time.

SOE taking over is a good thing?  You can't be serious!

Nothing this company takes over does better then before they did. Don't you know how they've taken over games and virtually demolish them?  They have a stable of has-been games, games no one wants to play, games that were once good and now are ghost towns.  I guess if anyone believes SOE will make things better then they don't know much about this companys history.

QFT. I can't believe it either man. Obviously a lot of people are new to the genre it seems, or horribly forgetful.

SOE taking over Vanguard is a good thing.

Brad McQuaid was running that game down the shitter fast.  They need a company with experience to handle this.

I've never had anything against SOE, in fact I've enjoyed their products more often than I haven't.

The only people I feel sorry for in this situation are the Sigil employees that were fired.  Many of them were probably redundent positions that should have never been hired to begin with (27 producers to 11 programmers.. 3/4 of the employees were in the art department), but they were because of incompetent managers.  And now those incompetent managers still have jobs and 50 undoubtedly skilled developers no longer do as of today.

I know SOE couldn't hire them all, and there was probably no reason to.  But either way, that's a tough situation and my sympathies go out to them.

I remember when I was playing VG that they where intent on getting rid of and banning Gold farmers.  Do you think SOE will continue the never ending task for a anti-goldfarming game experience?

No, in fact, i wouldn't be surprised if SoE asked the gold farming company for its fair share... or start a gold farming thing on their own.

SOE does make good games, if you say they only make crap then you don't know the company. As for the other basher with Tifa in ti, please step back take a breather and calm down. I find it hard to believe that both of you played every SOE game, if you didn't then you are throwing down claims that are false and just plain bull.

Be cool to people, and try and stay cool that way you never have to regret making someone feel bad. Don't take what ya got granted because some people never get to feel happy. We get to play these great MMOs and surf a good site. Be thankful for what ya got and next time ya feel down imagine a fat sea otter waddling with a pillow and a night cap. Bam! smiles!

JUST SWG? ...Wow, perhaps "us" drama queens despise Smed and $OE for other reasons as well. Please, do not assume, theorize or hypothesize for in the end it makes you look like a buffoon.

I can't say I'm surprised, as soon as the XBOX hungry guys at Microsoft were out of the picture and $OE was in I thought it only to be a matter of time.

I won't ever be able to support another product from Brad seeming he up and sells it to "one of his best friends" (Smed) every time. Fortunately for me, I let go of Vanguard after the guys in Redmond were out of the picture (All be it they cared for the game as much as they cared for roadkill).

Name one publisher that is a saint? Name one company that is altruistic and just throws money away? Microsoft dumped Sigil for a very good reason. Sigil could never reach their deadlines and were badly over budget for the amount of work they produced. SOE saved their asses. At the end of the day all MMO's are based on and revolve around how much money to can generate for their developers, publishers, and investors. If a game can't earn enough money then it won't last very long.

Let's also face the fact that no other publisher would of given Sigil a chance after MS dumped them. If it weren't for Brad's relationship with Smedly well his company Sigil would of never of gotten SOE on board. They also would of never of launched VG either. Sigil would of just gone bankrupt with very little to show.

SOE has now provided a viable future for Vanguard. They have saved Sigil from Brad's total mismanagement. Hell Brad hasn't even been involved with the project since it launched according to former Sigil employees. That really speaks volumes in terms of the amount of supposed "love" he had for this project. Let's not even mention his golden parachute position of "advisor" given to him by SOE. Frankly why Smedly felt so inclined to give that useless asshat a cushy job like that is beyond me. SOE buying up Sigil is frankly the best thing that could of ever happened to the surviving Sigil employees and players.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

so let me figure this out...

Microsoft and SOE=bad because they are big companies ($)

Vanguard=product ripped to shreds by everyone on this forum but now everyone suddenly cares about it now that SOE is taking it over

Sigil=once good because they were a smaller company but bad now because they let SOE take Vanguard over

    okay think i got it

I'm also glad that SOE is taking over and will be even more happy if they decide to start buffing my Monk.

One of Murphy's Laws states that "success forgives all sins." As long as it can produce value meal results -- instant gratification -- the morals and ethics involved in corporate practices are easily overlooked. Philosophically, I just feel that people don't hold corporations accountable for their actions and that's why the corporation has risen to power in the western world.

Hate for SOE is not generated solely by SWG players. In fact, the same doom and gloom effect that inflicted Vanguard occurred to SWG when players learned SOE would have their hands in SWG in production. This was well before SWG even launched!

Fact is, they've pissed off each of their fan bases. Not many people talk about Matrix Online or Planetside, but both had similar issues that EQ, EQ2, and SWG did, including "combat revamps." I am often amazed that their blatant abuses are allowed to continue, but, again, that is the price of apathy. Not many people CARE that SOE is responsible for a great number of gaming tragedies on its own, parent company not withstanding! For me, the SOE treatment of players in SWG was an expected behavior, although the NGE caught me totally by surprise -- and I consider it my final straw with them.

All that said, Vanguard being bought out by SOE is inexorably better for fans than having the game shut down completely. However, it is bad for the MMO industry as a whole, because this means SOE is just that much more powerful, even if it's a few thousand subscriptions gained. Their business model relies on buying out smaller companies with IPs and essentially extorting their games in the name of Station Pass: they're the vultures in MMO town.
