From what I have seen, I think there is still a lot of bug squashing to do, and one thing that I don't want is a game to come out too early.

Maybe late june, but I think realistically it's more of a late july/mid august release.

I'm expecting a September release date.

I believe they will try to get some boxes out to retailers, and as the game stands now, it seems they are fixing some severe issues. They have announced that they have halted most development on future features and are just bug-testing right now (which is good)

I truly hope it doesn't get pushed back to 08 as most MMOs have done so...otherwise it will have been a very dry 2 years for MMOs.

It's hard to judge. All the recent news that they have put out is pretty old. The latest thing on MMORPG.com that was posted here last week is a month old (from when it was posted)..

And the Devlog about PvP that said they have a long way to go on (in the devlog) was responded to by a Dev and said that they were pretty much finished (and he replied to it the day of the thing being posted)

So i'll say it'll be really soon. But We are already about halfway through May, and with no news of a date, it seems like it's getting late in the game for a June release.

Will be much earlier than 2008 though.

I think it may make the end of June (by that I mean the last day of June) or early July because from what I have seen they are not too far off, but it's still in beta, so anything can happen.

Reason I stated September is from the April 27th Dev Log post "State of the Game"

I believe they will try to fulfill the retail distribution, which will take more than a month considering they have not yet signed a contract with the distributor.

The game will be in a completely retail state mid-June, so hopefully they'll launch it in July as a digital download, and then follow that release with box sales to attract the non-MMO Sid Meier's fans.

    I'm still guessing August/September.

Of course, that whole “shipping the game” is what most of you are interested in. We’ve now focused on final feature and polish work to make sure the game will be ready, but there’s a whole other area of work that has a big impact on our release date, and that’s retail distritbuion.

There are two ways to do retail distribution: The first is to take your box around to the major chains and ask them to stock some copies. This results in an order which puts a few boxes in at each retail location, but when it sells out (if it does) it takes a long time for it to be re-ordered, which kills your momentum. If you’re not expecting to sell a lot of boxes, it’s not terrible. The second way to do retail distribution is to market to the channel. You buy end caps, you do some events for the retailers to get them excited, you share some advertising costs, and in essence you build up their momentum and buzz so that they’re excited about you and order lots of copies, talk you up to their customers, and so on. It’s a major effort and it has a big impact on sales.

But it takes time. When we thought about looking for distribution, we wanted to wait as long as possible so that the game would be in as good a shape as possible. It helps with the deal terms, especially in how aggressively the distributor is going to push your game. Essentially, our job is to make our distributor excited so that excitement rubs off when they’re talking to the retail buyers, so then their excitement rubs off on the branch managers, and so on. But we didn’t realize what the lead time was on selling into the retail channel and so we probably waited later than we should have. That was my fault, in particular.

We would like to do a retail release, rather than just a digital download, because we believe there are a lot of gamers out there who would be interested in trying us out if given the opportunity. We also want the awareness that a major marketing effort can build. We’ve done what we can here on our website for the last four years and it’s obviously gone pretty well, but there’s a lot of people out there who still have never heard of what we’re doing.

So, if we go down the route of a big box release (though it’ll still be available via digital distribution) it will require a delay in the release date. I’m not excited about delaying the game, but I am excited about a great launch.

The reason we haven’t talked in more detail about this is because we don’t have a signed contract with a distributor. Having been through a number of these legal negotiations, you never know exactly what’s going to happen until you have a signed document. So while we may delay, we’re still aggressively working towards finishing the game now, and have been putting our contingency plans in place.

Since a good launch is so, so important for an MMORPG, I really hope they pull it of well.

The release of the game has come at a pretty bad time though. WIth AoC and WAR out this year, if I was the producer of POTBS, I'd want my game out before either. Leave it till next year, people will be to drawn into them games to give POTBS a chance.

No one can agrue that in all fairness, WAR and AoC will have very impressive subscriptions when released. Not that POTBS will do badly, but I think It will achieve what EvE online has, a medium, dedicated fanbase of around 200-300k.

My guess is a mid July - Early August release. Ofc I hope for June aswell ^^

I think War was pushed back to 2008... and AoC isn't until end of october. So they have a little window mid-summer.

Vanguard's disastrous launch should be a clear warning for the developers that whatever they do, they shouldn't release too early and incomplete.

The subject matter is so different from AoC & WAR I can't see either being a problem. I'm really not happy about this delay though. I think the best thing any developer can do is not publish any dates, not even guesstimates until they are 150% certain they know it's going to ship on the given date. AoC has seen a big dip in interest after Funcom had to push back, it's only natural and will be the case with any game. Build that hype up all you can and use it BUT be sure to get the dates spot on or you lose a hell of a lot of momentum.

My guess is they will miss their projected release date by a month or 2. I really don't see how it could possibly ship on time unless they are going to skip the beta phases. With an MMO that could be a huge mistake.

In the Beta phase the game is basicly ready to be shipped, but the servers still need to be stress tested. Without stable servers, the game will be "dead in the water" so to speak.

One word for any MMO considering hitting retail before they really should..

It's not complete and polished yet... They would have to be crazy to release the game as it is - instead of getting it completely ready for release and making more of their game in the long run.

I have been watching and waiting for this game since the start.  Actually the game has been in development over 4 years... I think it was 2001 when I first started watching it.  So thats like 6 years.  They were just a bunch of people meshed together to make something good.

I have no problem with them waiting another year to release as I have waited this long.  They even revamped the game engine and added some new eyecandy and areas like running around and fighting with your captain... something they said that would not be likely to happen 3 years ago.  Now they have it (granted the last videos I saw, doesn't look that good with the captain view) and the ships are beautiful.  They take player comments, content and critisism very seriously.

Right now (as its been 5 months since I have checked back in) I am not sure they even have a publisher, and actually, I hope they never do.  These guys will do what no one has done before.  Start in a basement with a MMO and expand it with quality content that the gamers deserve with constant dev feedback.

These guys are doing right.  No need to bash em, and no way in hell will this be a Vanguard game.  So bite your tongue.

This has the be the biggest pile of spin ever, to get more work onto a game that should have been completed long ago.  Vanguard part 2 here we come.  Lol the irony of ironies will be if they get SOE, lol then we all know the shit has really hit the fan lol.

You speak as if your butt was constipated.

Relax will you?  These guys have been working hard on their product.  It will be released when it's released and should prove to be a good game.  And I am not a "fanbois".  So you can just quiet the cakehole there pal.  Pirates of the Carribean is being released very very soon, and is a rush job.  This game has only been worked on the past year.  Of course there was probably a lot more money pumped into it, because PoTBS wouldn't give Disney their game.  Now they are releasing pretty close to one another.  First out out wins, right?  Wrong.

Go play PotC if you want to run around in a big budget game.  I am going for quality, PotBS for me.

I personally hope they do make it. I've been watching the forums and updates on the website. I haven't gotten to play beta but im just hoping for a game that doesn't feel like im playing WoW. I would like something with a bit more depth.
