Severe "hitching" issues, anyone have a workaround?

Hi all, I have been playing the game for a few days and am experiencing what I believe would be called severe "hitching".   I have spent some time researching this on the official forums but due to how they are broken down by the type of issue, people seem to be argueing more over if this is a network, video or PC issue than actually discussing it.  It seems there are a few flavors of this as well ...I am just going to try here to see if anyone else here is experiencing this and if they have any ideas on how to at least reduce it.

First, the specs:

E6700

EVGA 7950GX2 1 Gig

2 Gig Corsaire XMS2 DDR2

Win XP SP2

running at 1600X1200

Probably something worth noting is that as a former Vanguard player, I was able to play that game, the day it was launched at fully maxed settings with very few issues.  Had this system for a while and very very few issues with any other games I have played.

In LoTRo, whenever I move, the graphics stutter, or hitch, almost constantly.  Its at least once a second.  I can take a step, get some frames in..then it stutters briefly...and so on and so on.

If I move the mouse to pan the camera, I can do this extremely fast without observing it.

I know that Turbine has acknowledged an issue with when you possibly change servers, but this is not a "chunking" type issue at all...its almost constant and I would consider extremely severe.

It doesnt seem as bad in dungeons but its still there.

I have tried knocking the graphics down to bare minimum and it still happens.  Hard Drive defragged, virus scans run, drivers up to date, other games are still fine.

The latency is showing up around 15-20MS, I dont believe that would be causing this...but when looking at it...I wouldnt rule out some network issue causing this...I just cant imagine it being on my end as I have a cable connection and have never seen this happen with an online game before.  Maybe some firewall config?

Please let me know if anyone else has seen this at the level of severity I am talking about.  This is not the case of run for 30 seconds and lock up for a second or two..this is constant.

From what I understand the problem is caused by the way the game loads textures. One possible work around for this is to get a higher RPM hard drive, but from what I have heard it doesn't help much. For me personally I only see this "hitching" every once in a while, maybe 3 or 4 times during 2 hours of game play, so I don't know what would be causing the large amount you experience.

Bump your video resolution down some, might help. I have the hitch to but playing the game at a higher settings then I should

I get this after the latest patch I think. I'll have to log in again later and monkey with it. One that can help, I believe, is going to UserPreferences.ini in your "My DocumentsThe Lord of the Rings Online" folder (where your screen caps go).

There is a line under display, AllowFakeFullScreen. Change its value from True to False. That helped me some.

Your computer is too good for this game, sorry.

As someone else mentioned, the "hitching" seems to be related to how the engine deals with textures. DDO does the same thing. Turning down the graphics quality, or better yet, turning off various texture effects can improve things but not totally solve it. I'm hoping with the amount of LOTRO subscribers that some pressure is finally put on the devs to fix the texture loading/rendering of the engine; it's the only real issue I personally have with their engine at all.

it'll never get fixed. the engine was recycled from the AC2 days 5 years ago. same engine same flaws, even the tech for the UI dates back to the turn of the century. thats why theres little/no customization. its all outdated and recycled so they can crank out MMOs, hit after hit.

    cheers

You can get a good starting point for tweaking for hitching here:

Some of my settings have been slightly tweaked since I last updated this, but the tweaks detailed got rid of the worst of the hitching for me. It still hitches occasionally when loading dense textures, but the more frequent hitching is gone for me.

Start by having the game redetect the best settings for your system, then apply the tweaks from there.

I hate to tell you this, but the engine for LOTRO is completely new from what I've been told.  If you dig deep enough, you will find out that it is the Havok engine.

Yeah right, havok my ass...it's the same engine used for DDO (slightly tweaked) which is ye olde AC engine.

And wasn't havok only a physics engine?

It sounds like it's texture loading, as well as new models drawing issue. Try playing around your texture cache size. It might help.

If you have a LCD and a fairly high end graphics card I think it may be that problem..try this

You have to enable Vsync but it doesn't work (its a bug). To be able to turn it on when you check the Vsync box, you have to access your .ini file. Its in My Documents/Lord of the Rings Online and its called UserPreferences. You can open this file with Wordpad (maybe its another name, I have the french version of Windows). In there, you will find the line AllowFakeFullScreen=True. Remove True and put False instead. Then save this file, quit and run the game. Access the graphical options and enable Vsync. Thats it.

If you have enough RAM and know what you are doing, you could try disabling your swap file.

Nope, Nope, Nope, Nope, and Nope.

From looking at this post, I can now assure my hypothesis is correct:

Duo core systems cannot run LoTRO smoothly.  I've also been looking around, and this is the general trend I see.  I guess it's just the way the graphics engine is setup, it's not very compatible with Duo Core systems.

I have a E6300, and get the exact same crap you do.  You get used to it after a while, but it sucks.

Solution?  There is none, either downgrade your comp or wait for Turbine to release a patch in June!

Do you know anything about the game engine?

    Answer:

LOTRO uses the G3 engine made by Turbine, an updated version of the G2 engine used for AC2. This does not mean that LOTRO will be like AC2: the engine itself is a generic toolset to build the game and contains no concepts (as best as possible) for a specific game rule set, form of combat or look-and-feel. Also tools like Maya for 3D modeling , Photoshop Pro (textures), Worldbuilder, MS Visio and even MS Excel are used.

Turbine is also a listed user of Havok, an engine to create realistic physics, and "Granny", a tool for creating avatars, but we do not know if they are used for LOTRO.
