Gold sellers ruining the games....is there no stopping them?

I left WoW due to massive spaming from Gold selling bots. They even send ingame mails to your mailbox!
Allmost everyday my box had several pages of spam. And everyday of play I got hammered with whispers/tells.

I had it and quit the game. And joined Lord of the Rings Online....and the same thing is happening there.

It seems clear they are using trial accounts. But its apperently a very lucrative business, and they can even afford to buy copys of the game and go at it until its banned, and just buy a new one.

What can be done to stop this? Any suggestions?

The only thing I came up with was having the option to block out whispers/mails from characters under a spesiffic "age", by that I meen how long the character has been played with. OR even have a option to enter level.
All this is optional for the player under options.

That way they would have to be forced to actually play the game until sending out their spam to the players. This would take time, and time is money....

Or atleast remove the ability to whisper in trials.

Personally this growing "buisness" is ruining my gaming experiance. I play to get away from everyday hassels. And when sellers spam me, its taking the joy out of it.

MMO companies need to find a solution, its a very VERY bad thing for the MMO game in my option...

I am not talking about stoping the buisness, I can accept it. But when they go ingame its crossing the line. They can addvertise on websites all over for what i care, just stay out of my gametime!!!

So far I've been lucky in LotRO...got a few random tells from gold sellers, but nothing near the levels you described. (when I played

Likewise, same here. it is not particularly nice. but what can be done about it? i bet these people have a random ip generator, a program to make sure, and a undetectable mod to the game that adds the bot...

usually mmos do not have 3rd party security, so that is a big downside. but humans have always found a way to hack into anything.

NASA and the Pentagon have been hacked, so this is nothing. i hope one of these days something can be done.

I just don't like hackers full stop. they cause so much damage and suffering, i think something really serious should be done cause its getting above the law.

I know I for one am sick of the gold sellers, but I'm afraid that there is little that can be done due to the fact there are people who buy it.  The only way to stop it is to stop those who are buying it...  you can't stop the sellers because they make way too much off of it and as long as people buy, it is going to continue.  They will just find more and more different ways to harrass you :(

Exactly the kind of reason why I'm all for game companies to legalize and control the practice :)

Is there anyone here playing EQ 2 on one of the servers where it's legal that can attest it stops the spamming?

Since open beta started I have recieved no mail from gold sellers and only 1 tell from a gold seller.  I don't think the problem is anywhere near as bad as it is in WoW.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

The only thing that can be done is proactive action from companies that are responsible for the MMO.

This isn't going to happen any time soon

Unfortunately the secondary market is the cancer of the burgeoning MMO phenomenon...

There are millions and millions of actual dollars being spent and made on the sell of cyber gear, mats, and even entire characters.

My granddad used to say...  "Boy always remember this, money talks and bullsh*t walks!"

In Lineage 2 it not unusual to be attacked by farmers in some of the dungeons.

I'm not too sure about all the servers, but the one I was part of even had an alliance that ran bots on the side for actual money.  They closed down various areas important for the second class changes for only those clans friendly to their cause.  They referred to themselves as a raiding alliance, but not a single person actually bought that line line of cow poo.

As long as there are MMO's there will be buyers..and as long as there are buyers there shall be a secondary market..and based in the Far East for the most part as well.

It is easy to stop but you have to do it in a wierd way. You have to make gear less important (or not important at all) and money not important to get gear. This would stop gold farming but the problem is it would also destroy the possibility of establishing any kind of an economy. So is it stoppable yes but you would ruin other parts of the game in the process. Since it is difficult to stop just learn how to make money by taking advantage of the inflated economy. I was so good at selling stuff in wow I literally had more gold than ten toons combined. All i did was found out how much I could sell basic things like linen cloth. Alot of people sell linen cloth for 2 silver to vendors not knowing that they can sell it in the auction for alot more. You also have to know whats valuable to other classes like one toon gets fade leaf or swift thistle and sells it for one silver. They don't realize that rogues need those two ingredients to make potions so they will pay alot more then vendors will pay. If you do these two things you'll be rich despite the fact that gold farmers are inflating the economy.

If everyone had it so they didn't receive mail and tells from players at level 1 all the gold sellers would have to do is kill a few monsters and then spam everyone at level 2.

If everyone had it so they didn't receive mail and tells from players under level 10 all the gold sellers would have to do is kill a few monsters and do a few quests and then spam everyone at level 11.

How high would you set the level to block tells? Eventually you risk missing out on a lot of valid messages.

I'm sorry but the simplest way to stop gold farmers is by making it more difficult to farm gold. If it actually required a certain amount of brains to make money in game, gold sellers would have to pay for more intelligent farmers (which would cost them more and slow down the amount of money coming in making it a less lucrative venture).

This is something that is beyond the reach of most developers because by doing this they could no longer feed off our addiction for repetitive action.

    Oh well

Gil selling about ruined FFXI for me a few years ago, when i played WoW i got mail and have been harassed/camped by gold farmers... My guild puts their characters on a list and corpse camps them and we have had cooperation with alliance guilds who do the same to horde farmers.. Recently a lot has been done in terms of removing RMT from games, they track large amounts of money changing hands for no return and they always find out who has been supplying the money and whose level 1 characters are sending 1000 gold or more to random people...

even games like runescape are doing that... they arent able to kill all of the level 3 bots but they are removing the characters that recieve the money

    if its true, its economics.

thenif i was in control of the game, i would force the hand, force the price of gold so much on the npc's that in turn would make the gold farmers into opressive pricing, which into turn no-one would buy, but then again gold farmers can not move, in that case then you have to put a price limit on selling gold and tax. that should slow them down a bit.

the problem is CD keys are sold by the thousands to RMT companies for like nothing... if they have a character removed it takes about 10 cents worth of chinese labor to create a new account...

Its not only CD keys but trial accounts that allow access to the main area. This is SWG on a regualr basis now:

soon as the CSR's kills this one two more pop up. Its a never ending cycle. Yesterday two more bots from a rival gold farming site popped up next to the regualr two and started in. General chat becomes worthless around them.

The worst I saw were bots in LOTRO beta! Freakin beta and were spamming.

Well, they need to do something.

Its not hard finding the companies selling. They have logs over the game and can see which ones are sending ingame tells to players...then sue the hell out of them!

Sadly its really the players faults, or actually the people that use their services fault. A friend of mined bought gold and I cussed the guy out all day long fot doing so.

If we only stop buying they would go out of buisness...but I guess thats not gonna happen.

i was thinking of buying star wars galaxies. good you showed me this. i have written that game off.

    1) Yes, WoW has gotten worse. My friends and I were killing a mini-boss last night in Shadowmoon, and during the event, which lasta only around 5-10 minutes, I got 4 gold spamming tells. Every day I get atleast one in-game gold mail.

    2) The only real way to stop it, is to hope the general public stop buying. But because they won't stop buying, they won't stop spamming. Sadly.

They should do something like the 10 day free pass... where you cant use the shout, the mail, or the auction house.... at least until you're level 10 or something... make it a little harder for them..then just regularly remove gold from level 1 accounts that have an insanely large amount... the companies will cave in eventually.. or something like an identity verification system where you can only have one account and you need all of the details...

Simple, allow the game developers to sue anyone who spams "buy gold... etc". Shouldnt be too hard as credit details required right?

Gold farmers need to get their pcs nuked.

what if there was some kind of a program threaded into a patch that would instrall itself in WoW that blizzard could trigger and perma disable WoW for a computer... in extreme cases that would be pretty cool...

Exactly, it is in the hands of the developers.

A closed crafting based economy would be my favorite. But I'm sure game developers are creative enough to think of something better. The problem is probably that the producers don't see it necessary.

And of course, everyone should boycott the gold sellers.
