I'm on UO to stay for now. I've been on the game for 7-8 years, and after three or four years trying out other MMOs, I just keep landing back in UO. No game since SWG has been able to match the feeling I get with UO.

Friends told me to play WoW. It was fun for 30 levels or so, until I found out that whole thing where you can't have a house or anything else for that matter. Whoop dee doo, phat loot, d3wd. Whatever. Boring class system.

Same with Vanguard, though you could have houses and boats there! It still had a class system you could sleep through.

LoTRO has a class system too... Seeing a pattern, now. I love Tolkien, and the game is tons of fun, story wise... but gah! Can't someone put something out that isn't the same exact thing we've played now for the last 7-8 years with a different setting?

Conan looks like it might be promising, but I don't know if the combat system innovation will be enough for me. In the end, apart from minor things like traits or whatever they want to call them, and loot, you are essentially the same as the next barbarian over the way.

Tabula Rasa looks interesting, it -is- Garriott... but I am worried that it'll just end up being some weird arcade-like experience where you log in for 30 minutes and you've gotten your fill.

It is amazing to me, how one of the oldest and most outdated games, is still way beyond any of the new MMOs, experience and character progression & customization wise... People laugh at UO these days, but man, it is so much more meaningful than any of these other cookie cutter games.

Man is born, man lives, man dies, and its all vanity.

I have to agree with you. I think it has, and is, something of Ultima's thing. Bonding people for life, or at least an extremely long time. And the fun thing is, when you start to get boring you are most likely to find something you have not tried before and have fun doing that. When I started UO I couldn't stop planting flowers, and I later fell in love with PVP, and now I'm stuck with role playing (something that I wont ever get bored of I'm sure).

    It's still fun!

Played WOW for over a year besides UO, but two MMORPGs are a bit too much time consuming so I will let WOW go for now and stay with UO for now.

Still think though that in some parts like hunting and gameplay WOW is vastly superior, just not a sandbox like UO though and levelgames are not the best for roleplaying either.

UO has the best selfmade roleplay not supported by any company though I think.

Check out europa servers for a look.

I hear ya...Ive been playing UO for the last, what, 6 years...and the same thing, Ive tried many mmorpgs (star wars, anarchy online, matrix, lotro, auto assault, earth & beyond, etc) , and none grab my attention much.  Star Wars almost got me, but then they overhauled the whole game system, simplified it, and pretty much killed it.

But I have the same problem...I just cant stand the exp. leveling....its boring to me; Ive enjoyed the freedom of UO when it comes to skill training...you dont level up, you just work on your profession, whatever it could be....you can mix and match, you can change what you do, and so forth.  And yes, the house customization and all the little 'distractions' (plants, fish, etc.) are something Im so used to, that having no home in other 'worlds' is kinda dissapointing......the only game I might check is Darkfall....if it ever comes out....seems by the time it does, its not gonna be too interesting.  Well, KR, here I wait.

I never played UO, but my roommate did and while I feel it would be difficult for me to get into now (I am not a graphics whore.. but its still hard to get into much older games).  But I hope down the road that a new game with similar ideas comes out, because from what all my roommate told me of his past playings it really does sound great and I did enjoy SWG for a while.  For now ill just play what I can and wait (kind of interested in Darkfall.. although it kind of seems like it could be empty promises).

    - Oh yeah and oging ot try Pirates of the Burning Sea.. not sure how much freedom and sandboxishness (new word) is there.. but sounds like good PVP with meaing atleast.

That's the thing! It's not hard to get into, quite the opposite actually! And it makes it even easier if you have someone to guide you around (and the community is mostly filled with nice people that love to help each other out!)

Yes, this game is old, going on 10 years!  (beat that 'any' mmorpgs out there!), but its not too bad to join now....specially with Kingdom Reborn, for they are working (and already have made changes) on the New Player Experience, to help you get started.  And even better if you have someone around to help you out.

I got my wife to start playing it, and she doesnt have too much time to play with real life and all.....but she got the handle of things in less than a month.....and she is hooked!  Its been a year now! and she is loving it....kinda reminds me of when I started (and got hooked as well) 6 years ago, and its a joy to see someone enjoy this old game that much.  And my wife is no hardcore gamer....the most she plays are games like Caesar (and all its hybrids) and some Rise of Nations....so for her to get the game that fast and that good....Im sure you will fit in very quickly...

And since UO doesnt force you to one path of profession skills (like pretty much all other games), if you dont like what you are currently training for....you just start doing something else and presto!   The glory of controling your character, without having to restart!  So go for it....even if you wait until KR comes out, or the next expansion which will come out soon after KR.  JOIN US!! lol

despite what everyone is saying about its fualts and how ea screwed uo over, i definitely agree that its not to hard to start and that it is very worthwhile to get into. Ill will say with 100 percent assuredness it is the best mmo ive ever played.  hopefully darkfall will follow through with their claims of how similar ittl be to the original uo, but this game is still doing very well and is very much alive after nearly 10 years. The problem however, is that it no longer really attracts that much of a new player base exept around the REAL expansions. Compared to how it used to be, the population is alot smaller although it is still plenty big. The problem is that since its an old game with alot of vets and mainly mid-high level chars and that not many new players come and it is harder to get started on your own than it is with dozens of other noob friends running around. However, its still fine if u have a friend already in the game or u join a guild quicly or start with a friend. and it is still fairly easy to get good at the game on your own but it is probabally harder to get started than in some other mmos and especially to compete since a good percentage of the population has been playing since this game came out and are hardcore fans of it. Ea no longer really advertises the game and is probabally just trying to let it sit alone as much as possible till they drained as much as possible out of it. However, the game will stay a,live for several more years. there are several thousand hardcore gamers that will see to that : P. Honestly most people that have played it call it great and the game that made mmos popular it is still alive and although probobally worse than what it used to be it is still one of the best mmos around.  its definitly worth trying

Think Im about to reactivate my account as well, been ~5 years since I last played on the pay servers, but all these current games just don't meet the expectations that UO set for me.  I sure hope that KR comes out soon!

MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
