Opinions On COH... Important if you are thinking about buying!

icecube007xicecube007x Member Posts: 18

Ok. I have a huge problem with the top rated game on MMORPG. Just take a minute to listen before making a judgments. City of Heros, a new mmorpg "hit" is not what it appears. COH is one of the first of its kind. A solely fighting game. With no levling except for fighting and from figthing, this game gets old fast. Now, I am the type of person who just looks at a bad game and get hooked. Now with the ratings i just assumed the big price of $15.00 a month was worth it. But after two weeks i reached lvl 14 which allowed me to fly, and then i just stopped playing. I tried to have fun after that but having gotten the coolest power at lvl 14 supplies no motivation for the players. Fighting enemy after enemy just isnt fun after a while unless you play in a group thats always on and you get a sense of teamwork out of it. Many members, not just me, are realizing this too. I went on 2 weeks ago at the hot time of about 10 pm EST and most servers were on heavy load, but last night when i tried to get back on so i wouldnt have to canel my subscription by finding some joy in the game, the servers were all on light except for one which was on medium. I am serious too all those who are thinking about buying this game that you should not buy this game. If you have tasted the sweet freedom on multi-levling and doing mor than just fighting in a mmorpg, u will not be interested in this game. Your first reaction to this game is a absolute addiction, but i lasts at the most for maybe a month. Dont waste your money with this piece of crap.image (edited 6/9/04: i didnt meen to be so harsh to game at end, did bash up a bitimage)

    Interesting Icecube..

You had a few valid points. This game is fun. Yes you might grow tired of it after two weeks. I am level 29 Controller and still having fun.  To say the things you said then at the end say "this game is a piece of crap" defies logic. Especially since the game has just been out a short time and we haven't even seen the first upgrade yet. I have played every game ever made and had uber toons on most, (EQ, Camelot, ect...) This game is fun. Even if you were to quit in one or two months what in the world can you get for that money? Not even a tank of gas....  Oh well, each to his own

I agree with Kram59 and don't see how you make the jump from the bulk of your writeup to the 'piece of crap' conclussion.

What should have been done is to have this game labeled something besides a MMORPG.  The game actually is the first of its kind.  It is the first persistant world shooter and for those that love FPS or Teamshooters this game might be for them.  The VAST majority of the gaming market is in console games and this is one step up from something done on a gamecube.  if that is your thing, you might love it.

But for those that have an expectation of a MMORPG, you will be seriously disappointed.  The boards have become WoW like in nature with the kidiots going nuts because they can be uber superheroes.  But most of all the game play will bore you to tears.  image

The game is insidious.  It leads you in with this siren song of neat graphics and what looks like possibilities, but soon you realize that at level 30 you are identical to what you were at level 10.  You really can't be different, you use the exact same powers for the entire game.  Whatever you slot in your 1 key will be used for the entire rest of the game.  I have given the game every break I can, but what keeps coming back around is that it isn't a game at all, it is a platform for a game that never was added. image

You will have to excuse me a moment as I step back from the smash CoH cause its boring line.

Cause to be honest, it can and is boring if you are looking for the MMORPG experience.  My GF likes it so I got a second computer and account so we can play together.

What CoH is, it's unique, it deserves mad props for going outside the box and trying a whole new take on the tired MMO forumla.  I.E. crazy lvl grind coupled with inane amounts of "stuff" to get, uber loot and crafting crafting crafting.

I say its a breath fo fresh air in that reguard.  Someone made the comment that at lvl 30 you are really just a lvl 10.. well yes, and no. Yes because you don't really change all that much.  And no because you do change in how you do things.   I would rather I think, in the end be a lvl 30 CoH then a lvl 40 DAoC or some other game where one must spend hours on end to get the proper items, materials, loot, armor and weapons just to keep up and realize that you will always lose out to the guy with more time on his hands....

CoH isn't perfect, and its not a pure RPG, its a third person RPG/action game on a MMO scale.

CoH defintely has it's short comings but I think overall it's a very good game.  Though it probably won't be able to compete with the depth that games like WOW, EQ2 and GW will offer when they eventually come out.  Still a very good party system though. My biggest complaint is that as you gain levels, it quickly becomes a massive grind to keep leveling up, which is something that I'm really not all that fond of.  I'd rather level a character up all the way and start new characters then have to spend 4 months getting all the way to level 40, which the way it's going it might take me that long and probably even longer.

If you come into this game expecting another level grinder your going to find yourself frustrated around lvl 15 hehe, wich doesnt take long. This is more a game of hack and slash than grinding, the monsters are pretty fun to fight and you rarely stand still to do so (if your smart anyways). Reminds me alot of the original asherons call, the xping's so fun at first that you forget your leveling. I actually kinda miss ac now that i think of it lol

That's pretty close to the truth. I know that many of the people I played with on Planetside and cut their teeth on EQ regularly whine a little that the content in the game is light. Yet, after a couple of months of beta and a month of live play, they still show up on my in-game friends list. Right now, how well you click with your pick-up team has a lot to do with how much you enjoy a day's gaming session. However, I've rarely had 2 lame teams in one day.

Have to agree that this game is refreshing after some of the gloomy grinding I've done previously. I don't play as many hours as I used to, but I also DON'T HAVE TO in order to satisfy my gaming jones.

after having just played it looks good on the outside true style MMORPG inj Horizons I can say this.

The other games out there arent much better.

Every single one of them. Every one of them is a grind. HZ does this double whammy service by making crafting a serious grind and a boring combat system that can be macroed a grind of epic proportions.

So then the task becomes thus. How can we make the grind as fun as possible ? I don't know yet if COH has done this but they seem to have the right approach. They know these games are nothing but a grind so they acknowledged the fact that they must make it as fun as possible.

I give them full credit and applause for their approach instead of the over hyped over confident fluff type that AE puts on.

Will it compete with mega content games like EQ2 and WoW ? I dont know but I suspect City of Villians will attempt to address the one dimensional feeling of COH.

Im sorry about that first post, yeah i did bash it up. If this is a first for mmorpgs for a player it could be a lot of fun, but once you expiernce depth of a game such even the low rated Earth & Beyond i got bored of it pretty fast. overall this game is mostly for those who love fighting and i guess if they havent tated the sweet freedom of building stuff (my favorite)image

This isn't designed to compete with WoW, EQ2, etc.  This is meant to be something for the casual gamer, which the large majority of MMORPG's are NOT.  To be successful in the typical MMORPG, you must have a terribly high amount of free time to dedicate.  With CoH, you can jump on, party with some friends for an hour, and have a blast.  None of the classes ever feel useless, and each character can solo well, with a bit of thought.  (Some can solo with no thought at all).

I beta tested this game and felt the 15 dollars was wayy to high to pay, and second I felt this game would be a top notch single player game.

Right now I spend way to much time playing this game and I can't get enough of it. I mean the frantice frenzied combat is so interesting. You guys talk about depth in games like SWG, EQ and WOW. But really where's the depth. I mean in the end all you do is hunting and killing or you spend all day crafting. Those games seem to have more depth in terms of society and such. But most of the stuff you do is combat and CoH has gotten combat down to a key. Today I accidentaly sot a Tsoo and then suddenly it was like a comic book movie. 30 ninja's jumped out of the woodwork and my teams was franticaly battleing to stay alive. Right now with the new patch coming out CoV coming out to improve CoH and the ability to launch massive events such as the rikit invation this game has a lot of potential. This is very much a game for the casual gamer or guys that like combat more then anything else. I think CoH will be able ot hold it's own since it appeals to a different kind of gamer. And restarting and having multiple characters is easy. Really this game reminds me of a much deaper and constantly changing version of Diablo 2 which I played for a damn long time.

/agree with the original poster on this one... I beta tested from mid march untill mid May, leveled countless toons...But after a while you just realize thats all there is really to do.. The community is OK seen better, there is alot of KSIng from people who dont have or know about MMO etiqutte.. Pets in this game (mainly for controllers) are terribly done. For pet lovers,  the Ice pet for controllers looks like a Tankers Ice armor (blah) Rock pets look like a tankers Rock armor, Dark servent looks like Dark armor... Basicly what im trying to get at is that they put nothing into the pet design, nothing at all and that is and has been a major complaint since beta (no response last I checked).  Missions are redundant and while they do change at higher lvls its not enough to keep me playing and paying for another month. Getting to the end game boss was insanly easy, People on multiply servers where Farming him 3 weeks after realease. Thats just sad if you ask me, I dont know of any MMO were people were farming the end game boss at such a early point in the game.

I can go on and on about what this game lacks and what I dont like about it.. I will say that for the first 2 months I was having a blast and bashing all the people that were hating on it in beta. But now I have seen the light and realize that they were right on the money. This is a very nice game at first but it gets boring way to quickly.

    Hi!

I've played COH for a month or so.  I've experimented with all sorts of characters.  I have a lvl 20 blaster, lvl 17 defender, lvl 12 tank and another lvl 12 blaster.  I've tried numerous other combo's as well to get a feel for certain powers/abilities.   The game starts off  wonderfully, lots to try and experiment with.  Character generation is one of the best out there today.  Very little chance that you'll look like someone else (unless you of course you are trying to look like a trademarked superhero).  I've seen 10+ Hulks look-a-likes.

Grouping is fun and experience sharing works.  I've played in-door missions and also task force missions.  Killed the Clock King several times.   Explored many zones (flying) - stay away from flying mobs at higher levels... bad news.   Dying isn't terrible.  I like the way they handle the experience penality.

I belong to a decent supergroup. Its active and we try to get together to do missions or for trading enhancements.  Lots of chatting/discussion as well.

The problem I've run into is the experience grind.  At first the levels fly by, you can get to security level 12 with an eight hour effort.   Getting to 14 is an important goal as you can get your primary high-speed travel power and is a good goal.  However, much beyond that and its a level grind.   How can COH keep up the level of interest that has you totally engrossed as when you are playing through those first 10 levels?

Combat is more of the same.  The mobs get tougher.  In some cases rediculously so with melee types.  There are higher level villian groups with new tactics to battle against, but its still more and more combat.   I find that my enthusiasm for playing at the higher levels is lessening.  I signed up for three month plan.  I think I'll take a 2-week break and come back.  I know additional content is coming, but COH needs something to keep it fresh for the long hall.  That's going to be its greatest challenge.

I actually think people should at least go and see this game being played.  It certainly 'looks' fun to play.  But after around three months, I have to say, I am ashamed I have stayed this long.  I have played every archetype with most of the combinations of powers.  Leveled to the mid 30's one character and many others to the high teens/early 20's.  This was much easier to do before the casscade of xp nerfs began. image

Presently Cryptic haa instituted many road blocks to stop most players from advancing.  They have made it difficult to team and still receive any XP.  They have limited the mob level range that a player can hunt to only one or two levels over their own, slowing the XP by slowing how often you can even find a mob to attack.  Mobs below your level give almost no XP at all.  Mob XP are capped at four levels over your own.  Then, just for fun, the devs mix in higher level mobs with the lower levels so that if you run too quickly between gangs, the mob four levels over your own destroys you while you have a... are you ready for this? an 8% chance to hit it! for almost no damage! Even if you somehow fluke into a hit! image  Yeah, I feel like a superheroine!

They have made the mobs run away as you are defeating them so that you receive no XP unless you spend, in all honesty, sometimes a few minutes chasing after them to swipe at them once before they are gone again.  This is also a good way to be killed because the mobs are coded to run through other gangs to escape.

They resently nerfed the tank classes ability to hold aggro in an effort to have teams die more often, thereby slowing the XP even further. image

The dev team is going through turmoil like I have never seen in five years of MMORPGs.  Stealth nerfs are constant.  Then when caught, the devs have the gall to lie and say "Oh, sorry, we must have forgotten to put that in the patch notes.  Silly us."  This isn't happening once or twice, this is constant.  The devs put nerfs on the test server but had them go live within 24 hours without any comment about the loud screams from the testers that they were horribly bork.

Wow... people need to get this game just to watch it self destruct image  They are likely going to be talking about this immolation of a game for years to come.  I am thinking about making T-shirts to the effect of "I played City of Heroes and all I got was this lousy tshirt." image

GIve it some time. So far I must say this game is better after it's first month even with all the stealth nerfs then other MMORPG's. If you think COH is bad. My god SWG was the worst. CHaracters would become unplayable due to nerfs and more it was terrible. I'm still enjoying the game. ALthough I don't see why the devs are changing anything when there is no PvP yet. Although my rate of death has risen due to this patch in the last few days and i'm not happy about it.

I've been playing CoH since the beta.  I really like the game and have a lot of fun with it.  My highest chracter is a 29 controller but I have characters of every archtype.  I enjoy the fast pace and the ease of putting together a team.  I think it is ideal for the casual player.  They have done some things to make creating a group so I can log in, talk to a contact to get a mission, invite someone to join me and I'm off and running.  Missions scale to the level of the group so you don't really need to worry about group sizes.  Missions are interesting and include a cool storyline.

Will the game still keep me going 3 months from now when I've hit lvl 40 and done all the missions.  Probably not.  Will I enjoy it for 3-6 months definitely.  I also think casual players will enjoy it even more.

As to steath nerf etc people really need to get a clue.  If you figure out a way to combine a couple powers or abilities to easily defeat mobs with little or no risk you gotta know it's too good to be true.  So don't get hung up when it changes and you have to fall back to normal gameplay.  To read the rants of firetanks about the recent nerfs to their class is almost the stupidest thing I've ever read.  Anyway a little common sense and you can pretty much guess whats going to change.  So don't be bent when it does.

Best thing is to not worry about the fastest way to level etc.  Make a roleplaying character with the right powers, grab a partner, talk to your contact, and BE the superhero!!

I don't understand why anyone thinks this game is the first of it's kind. How is it different conceptually than EQ, which also was/is a hack n' slash game in which combat is the only way to level? The only difference is that the action in CoH is faster paced and more varied. CoH includes a lot of interesting concepts that are appearing in this next wave of MMOs, like instanced zones and missions and more customization options, but it's not really what I'd call "groundbreaking".

If it sounds like I don't like the game, I apologize. I still love it. Some people seem to think it's doing something very new and doing it wrong, when in fact it's following a very tried-and-true method that's way more familiar than not.

COH is a great game.   It really is.  BUT.  I have been playing it since the first of February...I just cancelled my account tonight.  Its just so much repetition at the higher levels.

I would say its the very best game for someone new to the MMORPG genre.  It has the unique ability of getting you waist deep in the action within the first 5 minutes of starting the game.  You dont have to run around scared of your shadow.  The graphics are top notch.  The sounds is good.  And the combat system is very nice.

The cons.  All you have is fighting.  Thats it.   PVP would help a little, but that is only fighting again.  I believe the main thing that did it in for me was the very structured archetype system.  If you meet 1 fire blaster in the game, you have met them all.  There is very little difference.  At least in other MMORPGs, if you meet someone of the same "class" their equipment and armor configurations might make them considerably different from another of the same ilk.

That all being said.  If you purchase an MMORPG to play for 2-3 months...City of Heroes will not dissappoint.  If you are a hardcore or powergamer...you might want to pass on this one.

COH is in no way a FPS.  I think anyone who thinks that has never played a FPS.  Also unless you think loot hording = RPing than COH is as much of a RPing game as any MMORPG.

Been playing since two weeks before launch and still love it.

You think flying is the coolest power?  Well... it seems like you never even wanted to give the game a chance.  First off, they have powers that are WAY better than flying, and you cant even attain them till lvl 20.  If you stoppeed playing the game at lvl 14, with just the one character you had. well you might as well stop playing games entirely.  Look, this game was not created to replicate your favorite MMORPG.  It was not created so EQ dorks can say they miss crafting.  It wascreated so you dont have to " craft ", so you dont have to spend ten days of you real life playing a firce ten hours a day, trying to attain one item, and the spend another 3 days running back to point.  The combat in the game is the core of the game,  if you can find another game with similar comba LET ME KNOW.  The updates inform that the developers are very serious about NEW gameplay that will free itself from the boring and repetive gameplay that exists in all other MMORPGS
