Too much hype

The upcoming MMORPGs, Everquest II and World of Warcraft, are hyped beyond belief. One, a SOE release, and the other, a Blizzard killfest. Now, why all the hype? Is it because Blizzard has never released a MMORPG? Is Everquest's hype due to the fact that the first Evercrack has been out for so long and fans really want something new? How many exploiters/cheaters/powergamers will be in each game?

I'm seriously looking for good reasons why these two games are continuously hyped and the subject of "what game is better?" topics. Any ideas?

They are two big budget games, from major companies, in familiar lands. EQ2 takes place in the world of Norath. EQ was so popular and addictive that people often refered to it as Evercrack. EQ2 has some of the most advanced graphics in MMORPGs to date. This will be SOE's first solo MMORPG release, but they have had much experience in the field. WoW is, just as the name says, in the very popular World of Warcraft. It has had numerous games before it, and the series is extremely popular. Blizzard is famous for not releasing a game until it is ready (even if that means very late), but this is their first experience with MMORPGs.

People are so hyped because there hasn't been a big game released in a while. There have been some good ones, but nothing of this magnitude since the SWG semi-flop. People are also interested to see if Blizzard can make the leap to MMORPGs, and if SOE can learn from their many past mistakes. Both games look to be good, and their potentially close release dates make for some great hype.

That is my guess anyway. image

Those two games will be the same thing we´ve seen sooo many times, but with better graphics. (Well, this only EQ2)
But, btw there are lot of Wc and blizzard followers, and the same with EQ.

I think WoW looks pretty bad, mainly because it is doing *nothing* new and innovative for the genre, it is in mu opinion just milking the warcraft name. EQ2 on the other hand seems to sound pretty good, it is doing some innovative things as well as carrying on popular aspects of other MMORPGs. I think the best MMORPG to watch though is Ultima X: Odyssey. It is the most innovative and exciting game i have seen that is currently in developement, from its unique and fast paced combat system (get this, you can actually block an attack for once) to its extremly open ended quest and class system. DustyBallz, to answer your sig, UXO is to most active roleplaying MMORPG to date, so if your into RP and an innovative fast paced game then check it out.

i think the hype is 2 great companies and players wanting a good mmorpg to come out, the last few years have been a bust with the junk that has hit the market. Horizons and Lineage 2 where hyped also till beta and release and ppl saw what they got, same with SWG. the players want something and it hasnt hit the market yet, so any game coming up to be released is going to be hyped. i would like to try EQ2 as i played EQ for a month and stopped as it wasnt my game, i stuck with UO till Age of shadows came out. now like everyone else im looking and hoping the next game out will be the one that we are waiting for.

Well of course they are hyped, EverQuest II is the sequel to Ever Crack, almost every Evercrack player and many others are going to be excited, Everquest was and still is pretty much the premier MMORPG, everyone want's to see how SOE can top that.

And WoW, it's developed by blizzard, so many fanbois think it's going to be the best thing ever (when in my opinion it's like the same exact thing as evercrack), so obviously with so many blizzard fanbois out there, it's going to be over hyped.

To be honest, Everquest II I think is going to do well, but WoW is going to do well for a few months, then go spirling down, unless Blizzard throws a bombshell at the game and revamps it.

I cant say what everybody elses reason for the hype is, but i know my own.

MY reason is that i havent played a MMORPG recently that has stuck to me and that i thought was incredible. I keep reading about EQ2 and WoW and i read the features and i see the screenshots and it all makes it seem like these games are going to be super incredible, and everybody is talking about it, and theres this huge hype around them. So to me, this huge hype around it and all the stuff i read about them makes me feel like one of them might just be the game that i was looking for.

well thats why im waiting so much for it anyways.

And i also agree with darkman in saying the everquest 2 will do well in general, but WoW will do well for the first part, and then might fall. I think it helps that the gamers looking forward to everquest 2 already know what an MMORPG game is like where as some people coming from warcraft 3 dont really have experience in MMORPG. THAT to me , makes EQ2 more stable, players wise.

BEcause there will be a rush to both games right away, and most people who play EQ2 will already know what to expect of an MMORPG. But those attracted to WoW might never have played an MMORPG and might therefore not like it, and might leave after a little because its not for them.

So im going to go with EQ2, stability is key =).

Yeah, one can wonder why certain games are so hyped and why others (who obviously deserve much better) are not. It seems that some titles draw 'trash' like moths to light or flies to rubbish (to put it bluntly) But why not let the 'trash' play the inferior games. This way the good under hyped games are 'trash free' and those player communities what you'd demand from a great game you want to stay with for years.

The only reason WoW is hyped is because it's Blizzard, so the fanboi's go nuts even if Blizzard is throwing sh!t at them. (Not that i said WoW was bad or anything).

I've read up on both games for quite some time. It looks like WoW is taking the everquest road. Nothing new has been attempted, other than now they are using the world of "Warcraft". EverQuest II is taking a huge leap and really going the extra mile. EverQuest II has a reason to be hyped. The worlds most sucessful mmorpg is finally making another MMO in the world of Norrath. Having such, the team is focused on so many aspects of the game. This will be the talk of the industry the first month of release, and many years ahead.

World of Warcraft on the other hand, is going to be the talk of the industry (Or talk of the fanboi's shall i say) for the first month or so, and i'll give it half a year before it becomes old news. Kind of like that moldy cheese i have in the back of my fridge image.

Basically what it comes down to is content. EverQuest 2's content is overwhelming. From huge guild houses, tiny inn appartments, to player owned boats, dynamic quest system, NPC voice-overs, and an immersive massive detailed world... This game will stay fresh, not like that moldy cheese image(jeeze, i gotta get rid of that sometime).

Why are the Matrix or LOTR are hyped like that. Because they are huge budget enterprises. Just like WoW or EQ2 are huge budget enterprises.

SOE has a habit of not treating its customers nicely. I hope they change that with EQ2.

Blizzard, well no question. Its the best gaming company out there as far as respecting its customers. Call me a fanboi, yes, but to put it bluntly, the day a tech will call me at home to work my problem out on the phone with me ( like a blizzard tech did for Warcraft 2 ) I'll be a fanboi of that company also. Now, they are launching a game with over a thousand of quest, compared to lets say the 2 quest in SWG........ (at the time I left anyway. )

EQ2, for its part, cannot be resumed better than the post I quoted above me. Its pure genius in the making.

Why are they hyped, simply because they will be on top of the mountain for a good while, they are just that damn good...........................

Dark and Light will cut the legs right out from under them both.

There is no question they are hyped beyond belief...which is why I ignore 99% of the posts about both of them.

You're actually saying that D&L will put EQ2 and WoW out of business?????? No chance in hell....

This is very obvious, guys... WoW is hyped because of Blizzard.  If Bioware or Rockstar or some other highly acclaimed company makes a game, no matter WHAT the Genre, there's going to be hype, and plenty of it.  Blizzard is NO exception.

EQ2 is hyped cuz, GASP, it's everquest! The mold to which all MMOs have clung is finally having a legitimate child... that's cause for much hype...

Now, I'm sure these are both going to be good games, however, neither of them has good reason to 'blow the others away' as their fans and hypers seem to believe.  Even DnL, which achieves it's hype by it's very own merit (and hype nearly equal to WoW and EQ2's) isn't going to 'own the market' that's very silly... but I have a feeling that these three games will take the lions share of the next gen of MMOs... much due to the massive amount of hype surrounding each of them...

Btw, that's REALLY why there's so much hype, because Hype SELLS GAMES.

And for the record, you can never have "too much Hype".

Dark and Light isn't gonna put those two games out of business, but it's gameplay and features will blow the other two's gameplay and features away.

Dark and Light will wind up being the standard by which all future MMORPG's will be based. I mean, it even has weather which will directy affect players and how they fight! (hailstorms and wind can really mess up pixies, dwarves may have a hard time in snow etc.) If you haven't been to the official site yet or read about it's features you owe it to yourself to check them out. It's almost unbelievable...like it's just a wishlist of features that gamers would love to see in a game rather than a list of what actually IS in a game!

I fear for EQ2 (not too sure why yet, but I do. Maybe AC2 lol. The whole '2' thing sounds like bad luck), and WoW is gonna have the worst community in MMORPG history. I will be watching EQ2 though. Even though I grew to almost hate EQ and it's forced grouping, spawn/zone reserving, and guild politics, it's still promising. I won't be touching WoW with a 10-foot pole due solely to the types of gamers I just know are gonna flock to it (juvenile.net, I mean battle.net anyone?) P2p or not, it will get out of hand and they simply won't be able to police it like they want.

Orcc, I would suggest you head over to www.worldofwarcraft.com and check the link to the beta forums.  WoW is working on fabulous new ideas in the genre of MMOs.

As for EQ2.  Sony floped SWG pretty bad from what I saw, and I saw alot from early beta to release.  EQ is a game that you either love or hate.  I for one won't buy Sony products of any kind after having to deal with them.  EQ has an addictive trait like no other MMO I have come across to date but it doesnt excuse they methods the company employs to operate.  In short EQ2 will be another attempt from Sony to grab at the coin that they know from experience is out there.  Will it be a product that will be worth the price?  I hope so for those that buy the game.  I sold my EQ account and I'm not looking back.

After recent releases like Lineage 2 I have learned there are far too many companies out there just trying to grab the money and run.  Guild Wars is potentially one of those games as they will hit you with a higher price in the stores, since there is no monthly fee charged to play.  Then once you have started playing there will be the endless expansions that EQ is currently going thru.  I think EQ is doing an expansion every 5 months, or there abouts.

As for UXO I can't comment as yet.  I haven't done enough homework to comment on it yet.  I can only hope that folks don't blindly waste their money on games that are out there that do nothing but take money and agrovate the user.  Has it occured to anyone that if you buy a program that doesnt live up to your expectations, its simply your problem and you are out the money.  There really is no punishment to putting out a bad product.  Bad reputation?  They just change the name of the "subsidiary company" that released it.

One of the reasons these two games are getting so much hype is because its not likely that either of them is looking to do a shady deal to the gaming consumers as they have given so much enjoyment to so many in the past.  You simply expect greatness from them.  I am waiting to see if my time with MMOs has come to an end or not.  If WoW doesnt fly the direction I believe it will be from the threads I have read, I will be done with the time and money sinks that they can be.

I would say that the Hype is for 2 of the best companies out there for games, I think that in alot of ways they pay for the hype with support and extra perks that they offer as well as a great gaming environment.

I am a EQ addict for along time now and am looking forward to EQ2, I was pumped about Wow but after compairing the web sites info and what people are saying I think I am sticking to EQ 2 at least for a while.
