May 18, 2007 San Diego, CA – Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE), a global leader in the online games industry, today announced that registration is open for its annual Fan Faire event being held on August 2-4, 2007 at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas. The SOE Fan Faire is a real-life social event held annually to allow gamers from around the world the chance to meet in person with other members of their online community. The event is filled with colorful costumes, passionate players and gigabytes of activity, making it the vacation destination of choice for players of SOE’s most popular games. Fan Faire attendees will also be treated to the world debut of SOE’s new online game.

But later in the article

For the first time, this year's SOE Fan Faire will feature Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Star Wars Galaxies and The Matrix Online in addition to EverQuest, EverQuest II, EverQuest Online Adventures and PlanetSide. In addition, Fan Faire plans to showcase a hands-on demo of Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising™, the new massively-multiplayer online game being co-published by Platform Publishing and Perpetual Entertainment, scheduled for release this fall.

end quote

My God, Perpetual is in the hand of SOE... Star Trek is doomed .  I would rather play Hold'em then attend.

Star Trek is already doomed. There will be no interior ship views.  So basically it is going to be some kind of Eve clone. I wanted my avatar to be Wesley Crusher, not the ship itself!!! This game is going to a bad. Where the hell is hope, I mean there is nothing to look forward to.

Maybe I should go to Las Vegas.  I have to check my Southwest rewards miles and I know I have enough American Express Points for the hotel… I wonder if Mrs. Rodo could a handle the Rodo Boys for a weekend for me. Dang, She going to do this already for Dragon CON.

Last check of the exhibitions list ( http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_dealers.php )    SOE is not coming to Dragon CON. No new customers there in the minds of the marketing of SOE, is it because Dragon*Con is America's largest, multi-media, popular arts convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music, and film.

yep No new customers there. here

Some licenses really work well for gameing other licenses do not. Star Trek is one of those licenses that does not lend itself to gameing. Worse then not being game friendly it has a dedicated fan base who will tear it apart merely for breaking with any aspect of mythos even if the break enhanced gameplay. The power of Star Trek has always been its cerebral nature. Morality tales spun into science fiction fair. Gameplay rarely lends itself to cerebral conflict resolution. Gameplay usually involved good old fashioned combat. The first time a starfleet captain slaughters eight hundred enemies to level up to resolve a diplomatic misunderstanding. Will be the day a million trekkers spin around on the ground suffering involuntary bowel movements at the same time. Really the technology is not there yet to really play a gameing experience true to the premise of the franchise. I never gave this game a chance in the first place. I love the license, but I doubt anyone could make it fun to play.

I read that was a rumor. Did the devs actually say that? The "gameplay demo" on youtube was a fake.

But back to the topic... Perpetual announced over a year ago $OE was publishing it and the STO boards lit up like a x-mas tree. Then you had the fambois saying "they're only publishing, not designing".  JUST like Vanguard. You KNOW that $OE already has an agreement in place for STO but won't announce it until they have to.

I already mentally wrote STO off.  I hope they'll prove me wrong.

I don't like it when you say things. - A Vanguard fan who does too.

If anyone happens to go to this in the name of all things good in this world MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THE VOODOO LOUNGE.  Its on the 53rd floor of the hotel they are holding the fan fare at.  They have a 4000 square ft. out door dance floor and bar (Yes, on the 53rd floor of the hotel)  Good times to be had all around.  Screw the fan fare, just skip it and go to the Voodoo Lounge.

    -Currently looking forward to FFXIV

-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda

I have to agree that any company that wants some cash and doesn't care about the long term life/quality of their game, it is a good move. IMO, $OE is now carrying one, maybe two, decent games. Sad, really.

But thats dumb, you make you money off the initial sales, and months into the games playtime. SOE not only KILLS games, it deterrs people from even giving them a try. Look at vanguard, SOE pushed it out when it was still in beta with 10923928131 bugs, the Devs knew it, the players knew it, SOE does not care. They have the entire MMORPG style of games only because they bought up EQ. Since then they've made 1 good game, but ruined it through their own greed from the beginning. Just imagine, how amazing SWG would of been if it would of stayed in beta for another 2-3 months, if the Devs would of had time to fix a lot of the bugs, add in mounts, etc. Then launch it. Same for vanguard, Vanguard needed another 2-3 months of beta for sure, they got 4-8 weeks? maybe. SOE will kill STO.

"$OE breaches ' testserver' with an upgrade without notice : in 2 weeks this will go life DEV_slave says"

"mass protest at DS9 : we don't won't this crap go live"

"DEV_Blockhead : everyone will be excited experiencing the iconic feeling of beeing Mr. Spok"

Thought I could find where it says no ship interiors, but I couldn't. It is late and I am beginning to doubt my memory, but I thought it said something like "we reviewed the idea of ship interiors and found it just to be too complex, so this might be a future enhancement if ever". Just going by my memory here sorry.

    roflmao!    Loved this little reply.

Yes, I had heard SOE was getting their fingers into STO about a year ago and wrote it off.  The recent announcement of dumbing down the concept just pushed STO further off my MMO radar.  As one of those who saw the original series when it first aired  I'm definitely let down with recent STO announcements.  But then, there's only been MAYBE 1 even moderately playable ST game, so it's no surprise.  I guess ST just doesn't really lend itself to "gaming".  After all, except for the season or so of the dominion war, The Battle of Wolf, and an occassional scirmish, the ST universe is at peace.  Where's the fun in that?

Where do people that are so naieve come from?

People said that about Sigil and look where they are now,  that sony are just gonna provide tech support and servers etc but now they actually OWN them as in Brad is Darth Smedley's prison bitch. So the odds are actually quite favourable that SOE will at some point take over Star Trek online particularily if there are signs it's going to be a huge hit.

All I can picture  is Rick James "Give it to me baby" playing in the background and Smedley ,smiling, standing over Brad.
