Barrow downs LOL. In beta I was running my burglar in there at night and I was in stealth mode when 3 wights popped out of their graves right beside me. I darn near had to change my undies. Old forest is spooky as heck also. Great barrow is the best dungeon I have ever ran and the best part is it is a early 20's group area.

Yes it does.
And it does it better than EQ, IMO. EQ might have had the edge in some ways though, because death was pretty horrible, and dying in a hostile place could possibly lead to more deaths, xp loss and corpse runs - or even losing your corpse altogether. LOTRO doesn't have that aspect of pure terror when you're trying to avoid tombstone reds, but it more than makes up for it with it's atmosphere.
Form the excellently creepy locations: The Barrow Downs, The Old Forest, The Fields of Fornost, Angamaur, The Circle of Blood - etc... to the special effects when evil things attack you, LOTRO has bucketloads of scares. It's just for a different reason than EQ had, for the most part. Like when you're effected by Dread in LOTRO, the borders of your screen close in and darken, the firey eye of Sauron flashes up for an instant, and just when that pale Wight charges into you with a roar, your screen will warp and distort. It is the best representation of fear I've seen in any game and adds a brilliant scare factor. The music also adds to the whole experience, and sometimes turns off just so you can listen to the creepy environmental sounds.

I know that feeling well. Since I'm an explorer by nature, I'd always have my EQ characters in areas out of their league. Though I like LOTRO, I have to say I haven't quite had that same feeling of fear as I had in EQ. There's nothing like having my 25 level EQ bard running around Skyshrine (35-60 level dungeon with dragons), or my 45 level Paladin slowly working up the Tower of Shadow, or my 10 level Dark Elf Warrior walking around Kael Drakkal (level 40 + city of evil giants).
Just thinking of it makes me want to fire up my EQ account, lol. Then again, my 25 level bard is stuck in a room in Skyshrine that he can't get out now that I recall. Nostalgia, very dangerous....

Simple answer. The sounds make you feel like you are there. Turn all sounds up and dim the lights as you play. :-)

Yes it does.

If they would have:
1. left out the lights (change occured in CB at some point)
2. disallow any 'beam-out' options while in the forest, so when you get lost, you are really lost and freaked out...
then it would have been 10/10.
